Hon Protus Akujah MP LOIMA & GUBERNATORIAL ASPIRANT 2027. PROFILE..
Born in 1976 into a family of ten. Joined Lodwar primary before moving to Lorugum Primary School and finally Kakuma arid zone where he sat for his KCPE in 1990. Despite being born of a pure pastoralist family with the migration challenges, he excelled in primary school and earned a place at Lodwar High School a national school for his secondary education. After his secondary education, he enrolled at Egerton University for a diploma in agricultural Education and Extension, and later pursued a Bachelor of science (Botany and Zoology) degree at Moi University. In 2004, he began his career with a non-governmental organization in Kakuma (LWF/DWS), later securing a position in South Sudan with IRC as food security advisor and trainer. Following this, he applied for Action Against Hunger (ACF-UK) with HQs in France. As part of the application process, he was informed about a scheduled phone interview; however, without a phone of his own at the time, he and his team arranged access to a cellphone booth for a disturbance-free conversation. He performed well in the interviews and was subsequently offered the job, which required him to travel to France for orientation and contract signing. Since he had never been to France before, he utilized a map for navigation. He was finally posted in North Darfur (El fasher).
Throughout his career, Hon Protus worked in various countries including Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Afghanistan, Somalia, South Kordafan and Pakistan . Hon Protus also worked with different organizations among them world vision, Oxfam-GB, IRC, ICRC, UNDP, UNWFP, save the children, ACF and DCA. He later resigned to pursue his Master's degree in Netherlands after securing a prestigious NUFFIC scholarship.
Upon completing his Master’s, Hon Protus formally requested to return to his job and was welcomed back. He traveled from Netherlands to Switzerland, where he was subsequently posted to Pakistan and later to Sudan. In 2013, Hon Protus Akuja decided to run for the position of Member of Parliament for Loima Constituency, winning the election. During his first term, he focused on promoting peace between the Turkana and West Pokot communities, establishing an annual peace accord for the Ateker community. Additionally, he ensured that his constituency received electricity from Kenya Power and built over five schools, including Loima Girls, Loima Boys, and Turkwel Boys, among others. He also constructed a technical and vocational training institute in Lorugum and established seven health facilities, such as the Moruese and Abur dispensaries among others.
Hon Protus facilitated water drilling in Loima Constituency, supported by the government and development partners with operations conducted in Lorugum, Lolemgete, Kopeto, Natwel, and Kaapus. He provided buses for several schools, including Napeililim secondary, Loima Girls, Loima Boys and Turkwel boys. His commitment to the community extended to aiding many Turkana individuals in joining the Kenya Police Service and helped reduce unemployment in the region. He also supported many students through the NG-CDF to cover their school fees and sponsored others in pursuing medical studies, water courses, provided scholarship to 100 students to pursue education courses to curb teachers shortage in Turkana County.
Hon Protus supported community groups through the UWESO fund, benefiting many. In 2019, he resumed his academic pursuits and enrolled for a PhD in Philosophy in Development Studies. As of November 15, 2024, Hon Protus Akujah has proudly graduated from St. Paul’s University with a doctor of philosophy in development studies specialization Poverty, inequality and development with research thesis on community stakeholder involvement and Project development.
