Venezuela - Cutural gathering RCLI | October 6, 2026

¡¡¡¡HOLAAAA!!!!

As part of Rotary Club Lahti International’s monthly cultural activities, we will discover Venezuelan culture together, learn more about its traditions, stories, food, music, and everyday life with Katyushka - a Venezuelan local from our club!

During the event, you can expect:

✨ A short introduction to Venezuelan culture and folklore
💃 A traditional Venezuelan dance presentation
🥙 A chance to try some Venezuelan treats
🎵 Venezuelan music and a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy together
🎨 A small art workshop where you can create your own painting inspired by Venezuela
📚 Spanish books available for browsing and discovering the language
📖 A possible Spanish storytelling activity for children (for kids that joining)

Everyone is welcome to join, whether you already know something about Venezuela or are simply curious to learn something new!

Feel free to bring your own snack, drink, or something related to your culture or Venezuela to share with others.

It can be anything small, the idea is simply to connect, exchange experiences, and enjoy an evening together.

”I’m joining RCLI for a simple reason: Lahti is becoming more international, and I want to help newcomers find their way around our town and region. I’ve been the newcomer in many places and countries myself, so I know the challenges that come with moving. Our region is a great place to live, study and work, and I want people who are new here to feel welcome. If I can raise their enthusiasm for it even a little, I’ll be happy.

Proof that I really like it here: we are a family of five, and right now I’m the only one who lives in Lahti full-time! My wife works in Brussels, two of our daughters live in Helsinki, and our third is studying in Rhode Island.

Besides being an RCLI member, I’m currently a startup rookie, after many years with corporates in international business development and general management, mainly in the packaging and building materials sectors. In my free time you’ll find me mostly at our summer place in Asikkala, and occasionally on a padel court.”

Club Recommendation:

Download and activate the 112 app. When you allow the app to track your location, you’ll benefit from, amongst other things:

- faster assistance in an emergency; the emergency services will immediately see where you are and you won’t need to remember or know your address

- the app also provides information for non-emergency situations; you can find various service numbers

- you’ll receive alerts (enable this feature) about incidents happening nearby (car crashes, forest fires, etc.)

🇬🇧 Oh, and you can switch the app’s language from Finnish to English!

🎯A week ago our weekly meeting had a Professional tone. Juri Kettunen was our Special Quest and, the main focus was on job hunting.

🌐 Rotary Youth Exchange Program 2027–2028
Ruby presented an update on the Rotary Youth Exchange Program, for which she is the club’s Youth Exchange Officer for 2027–2028.

The club is looking for four host families for the exchange student. We are now looking for four families volunteer, each family would host the student for approximately three months. IF YOU ARE interested — do ask more info.

✨Cultural Bridge – September Event
On Tuesday 8.9.2026 at 17.30 our club will have a Cultural Event at Multi-Culti Bobi (Päijänteenkatu/Vesijärvenkatu).

🧩 We are also starting mentoring program and looking for menties and then mentors.

🐰 Our members are also planning events for families and pregnant women.

Next up is Sandun Abeywardhana, always friendly and helpful. Sandun has only been living in Lahti for a couple of years, but already speaks Finnish beautifully.

Whenever IT issues cause a hitch at club meetings, Sandun is called in – unless he’s already there!

You might bump into Sandun on the university campus, at StartHub Lahti as part of the Spark Traineeships Oy team.

”I enjoy bringing people together and making a positive impact through service and collaboration. As a member of Rotary Club Lahti International and as the President elect for the club, I’m passionate about supporting communities and building meaningful connections across cultures by bringing people together.

Outside of Rotary, I work in project and product management. I enjoy fitness, yoga, reading books and meeting friends as my hobbies.”

Who are we? The Lahti International Rotary Club is kicking off its series of introductions – naturally, with its current president, Eila Parviainen.

Eila Parviainen wanted an International Rotary Club in Päijät-Häme because we are a Region that is becoming increasingly international. Thanks to Eila, our club is meeting again this week, and we truly are an international group of motivated working-age people.

“For me Rotary has learned a lot as a leader and as a human. I have got so many friends from different cultures all over the world. I have had a privilege to join meaningful projects to strengthen peace and prevent diseases. I wish I will soon see the day we can say “We did it! We succeeded in eradicating polio!” We are very close now and I will continue working for this goal as long as needed.

My first steps in Rotary were taken before I was a Rotarian. We, ma family, offered a home for an exchange student. With her I visited Rotary Club meetings and finally I was asked to join the club. Since that I have been host mother for seven exchange students and served in many different positions in club and district level.

Each role has teached me something I would not have learned in my daily work. I have given a lot of my time and efforts to Rotary but I have got so much more back. That’s why I am a forever Rotarian.”

The first meeting is ✅ and new Rotary year started!

Our weekly meetings are every other Wednesday/Thursday — so more people can fit meetings to their calendars.

There was coffee and cake — again!

🍴We will start also the middmeetings lunches from next weeks Wednesday at Mukkulankatu restaurant at 11.00 on. Hanna will ”book” a table next to the Dark Gallery in the restaurant area.

🧠 Brainstroms ahead! We are partipating again to DuuniExpo (Wed 3.2.2027) and going to take part also the Work in Finland’d Talent Boost Summit 2026 and DuuniDay in Lappeenranta LUT Campus too.

🌍 2027–2028 our club will also host with other clubs a Rotary Exchange Student. Ruby will lead this — host families are on the bucket list.

❣️We have now too a pennant! Polio Paul was so excited to show it to us all.

In Finland, sports play an important role when it comes to integration—for example, into the worklife.

And Lahti is a sports city—of course, here on Saturday we’ll be playing for fun, but we’ll be taking it seriously too! And there will be Sri Lanka flavours too.
