Poetry posters around Lahti until 14 June
To celebrate the Lahti International Writers’ Reunion on 12–13 June, you can spot laminated A4 sized poetry posters on lampposts throughout the city centre. The poems, printed in both Finnish and English, line the route from Aleksanterinkatu street to Opiston Kunkku on both sides of the street, starting from 2 June.
According to Sirkku Lindstam from Lahti Runomaraton, the poems were written by current and former residents of Lahti. Lahti Runomaraton collected them last year for the city’s 120th anniversary. Thirteen poems were chosen to bring a moment of delight to people moving through the city, and each poem was also translated into English.
The posters are a collaboration between the Lahti International Writers’ Reunion and Lahti Runomaraton.
Lindstam hopes that this poetry initiative will once again bring joy to passers-by, just as it did during Lahti’s anniversary year. She notes that the poems will remain relevant for a long time, since Lahti will continue to be 120 years old until it reaches its next decade.
She describes the poems as portraying Lahti as a rough-edged place with a distinctive population, sometimes even a little quirky in habits and worldview. The poets’ perspective is gentle and understanding, perhaps because both the writers and their subject look at their hometown from the same shared ground.
The Lahti International Writers’ Reunion is free and open to everyone, 12–13 June 2026. Welcome!
Thank you for the collaboration,
