The International Society for Orthodox Church Music

The International Society for Orthodox Church Music The ISOCM provides those interested in Orthodox chant with a place to connect with fellow musicians. We hope you'll join us in these efforts!

The International Society for Orthodox Church Music (ISOCM) was founded to provide researchers, composers, singers, and students with opportunities to meet, share experiences and scores, and to participate in conferences worldwide. ISOCM strives to achieve those goals through it's website, helping musicians in the discovery of materials, digital manuscripts, and the exchanging of ideas to enhance

the development of musical resources. The ISOCM looks to accomplish these efforts for students of Orthodox liturgical music around the world, by extending knowledge and fomenting creativity in the area of Orthodox church singing. ISOCM believes strongly in the raising of standards, the importance of international-interdisciplinary research groups, and the avoidance of unnecessary duplication of efforts. The ISOCM continues to look for ways to reinforce the unity of Orthodoxy in tangible ways for those living in modern society. Membership in ISOCM is open to anyone within any national church or jurisdiction. The contacts and choir exchanges/trips between musicians who have attended the ISOCM conferences prove that the Society's aims are being achieved.

Call for papers for IOTA 2027 – submit by 15 April 2026!

The International Orthodox Theological Association (IOTA) is calling for papers for its third mega-conference, which will be held in Poti and Kobuleti in the Republic of Georgia 🇬🇪 from 17 to 21 January 2027. The conference's overarching theme is "Tradition and Traditions".

Call for the session organised by the Church Music Group (co-chaired by Alexander Khalil, Bogdan Djakovic, and Maria Takala-Roszczenko):

This session explores the complex intersections of authenticity, transmission, and tradition across musical practices and contexts. While authenticity as a discursive construct has largely been de-emphasized in fields such as folklore, anthropology, and ethno/musicology—understanding it as a product of perspectival grounding that holds no explanatory power—it still plays a significant role in shaping perceptions of liturgical music and how traditions are passed down. Further, understandings of authenticity are a core aspect of the cultural and interpersonal dynamics of a core aspect of Orthodox understanding: continuity and relationship to Tradition. We invite scholars, clergy, performers, and practitioners to question the role of the construct of authenticity in understanding, practice, and lived experience. Possible topics may include (but are not limited to): authenticity and authority; historicism and re-enactment in performance practice; migration, diaspora, and the recontextualization of “traditional” sound.
