Finnish Film Affair (FFA) is the bold, bubbly and beloved industry event of the Helsinki International Film Festival – Love & Anarchy.

For over a decade, FFA has been a must-visit September market for film professionals worldwide, offering a daring, fresh, and delightfully extravagant showcase of Finnish and Nordic film. In 2024, FFA is diving headfirst into the hottest trends like AI, transmedia, innovative financing models and layered storytelling. The 13th Finnish Film Affair will take place in September 2024.

The 15th edition of Finnish Film Affair wrapped up on Friday! With over 630 film industry professionals brought together from 26 countries, over 220 meetings and 38 pitched projects from Finland, the Nordics and beyond, it once again broke delegate records.🌟

Created to support filmmakers in building stronger success stories, Finnish Film Affair transformed Helsinki for three full days into a meeting point for film professionals across the world.

Thank you all for joining us for these inspiring, action-packed three days of celebrating the art of filmmaking and exploring new connections and insights. We hope to see you next year when Finnish Film Affair returns for its 16th edition in 2027!💫

✨ Friday wrapped up FFA with a packed day of insightful conversations! ✨

☕ The morning began with coffee and conversation at the Scandic Helsinki Hub, where Johanna Wartio presented findings from a new study examining the Finnish audiovisual industry through the lens of strategic leadership and project-based business models.

🗣A t Gilda, the day kicked off with a timely discussion featuring Hugo Rosak, Liisa Sauri, and Julie-Jeanne Regnault on the future of European funding, the upcoming AgoraEU programme, and the importance of staying engaged in the conversations shaping our industry's future.

📽 Next, festival programmers Isabel Arrate Fernandez (IDFA) and Jason Gutierrez (Tribeca) took us behind the curtain, sharing insights into their programming processes and revealing that festival programming teams do, in fact, watch submitted films in their entirety.

💡 The conversation continued with Graham Begg, Margreth Olin, and Virpi Suutari discussing today’s distribution landscape, audience behaviour, and the creative and strategic legwork required to connect documentary films with viewers in a rapidly evolving market.

🎬 The afternoon’s panel on genre films and the XYZ Masterclass tackled the big questions facing filmmakers today: financing, positioning, festival strategies, and understanding who buys, programmes, and ultimately watches their films.

🌟 Friday also marked the conclusion of FFA’s side programmes. SpeedActing, a showcase event organised by Actors in Helsinki and Filmmakers Europe, and a documentary workshop with Margreth Olin on Vision, Impact and International Distribution filled Gilda with energy and buzz.

🌞 The closing sessions of FFA's own training initiative Nordic Flair took place in the inspiring Amos Anderson Home Museum.

🥂 To close the 15th edition of FFA, we raised a glass of bubbly at the Closing Reception at the Scandic Helsinki Hub.

💙 The FFA team warmly thanks each and every one of our wonderful guests, partners, and speakers for three inspiring, rewarding, and sparkling days!

🌟 Day two of FFA brought 38 fascinating, internationally promising projects to the stage at Bio Rex Lasipalatsi on Thursday, 24 September.🌟

🎬 Our Showcase Day featured yet again amazing pitches across all six categories: Series, Fiction in Progress, Nordic Selection, Fiction in Development, Documentaries, and Nordic Genre Lab.

🔥 We also welcomed a MPI resident filmmaker to FFA for the sixth time. This year, Sanjay Shrestha presented his project "The Helsinki Times" in the Showcase.

💡 Nordic Flair participants also continued with their sessions throughout the day.

🎤️ The award ceremony took place at our famous Löyly Sauna Party, and the evening culminated in an Industry Afterparty, where the participants danced, sang karaoke, and continued with the important networking in a more relaxed manner late into the night at Kino Töölö.

⭐ It's time to celebrate the winners of this year's FFA! ⭐

Our Showcase Day on Thursday, 24 September presented the 38 most promising projects from Finland, Nordics and even beyond.

The Showcase Day culminated in the award ceremony, where we celebrated outstanding fiction, documentary and series projects with nine terrific awards.

🏆 HALIMA (Naima Mohamud) was awarded the Best Fiction Project and received €3000 from the Finnish Film Foundation.

🏆 The Best Nordic Project went to 11 HOURS (Emilie Beck) and was awarded €3000 from the Amos Anderson Fund.

🏆 DARKNESS COUNTS (Anna Antsalo) was awarded the Best Documentary Project and received €3000. The Best Documentary Project award was supported by AVEK.

All three cash prizes are intended for the international marketing and promotion of the awarded projects

🏆 The winner of the Best Genre Project went to SAUNA DIPLOMACY (Teemu Niukkanen) and was granted 2500€ worth of colour grading services that go towards the project’s international marketing, as well as 2500€ worth of production services, sponsored by Post Control Helsinki & Angel Films.

🏆 The Producers Network Award, presented in partnership with Marché du Film, was awarded to Anniina Leppänen, pitcher of BABYFACE.

🏆 The winner of the MIDPOINT Feature Consulting Award was BIG DEAL (Hedda Mjøen), and the winner of the MIDPOINT Series Consulting Award was BODY IN THE CLOSET (Elin Grönblom).

🏆 Connecting Cottbus Producers Exchange was presented to Anita Hyppönen, pitcher of LINDEN LANE 6.

🏆 LINDEN LANE 6 (Josefina Rautiainen) was awarded full market accreditations to Göteborg Film Festival.

Friday, 25 September at Finnish Film Affair 🎬

🍂 It’s the third and the last day of FFA, but don't worry! We still have many insightful panels and bubbly networking lined up.

💡 We’ll start Friday at Scandic Helsinki Hub with a fresh cup of coffee and a conversation about producer Leadership in the changing film industry.

📽️ After the morning discussion, we’ll move back to Gilda to enjoy some thought-provoking panels on the future of EU funding, festival strategies, global distribution, among other things. The panels will be concluded by the XYZ masterclass on how a Norwegian film became a Hollywood film shot in Tampere.

🍂 Sadly all good things must come to an end! To wrap up three wonderful days of panels, projects and a whole variety of mingling, FFA will host a closing reception at the event’s official hotel Scandic Helsinki Hub.

Introducing the juries for this year's Finnish Film Affair!

The jury for Nordic and Fiction Projects includes producer and executive Jodi Hildebrand, Phoebe Hall (BFI), and festival director Fernando Vasquez.

The jury for documentary projects consists of artistic director Isabel Arrate Fernandez (IDFA), director Einari Paakkanen, and documentary expert Filipp Kruusvall (EFI).

The jury for Nordic Genre Lab Projects is formed by head of acquisitions Noëmie Devide (Goodfellas), Sydney Brumsfield (Searchlight), and screenwriter Espen Aukan.

Finnish Film Affair kicked off yesterday, Wednesday 23 September, and what a first day it was! The programme was packed with inspiring sessions covering topics ranging from ecological standards and low-budget filmmaking to the changing funding landscape.

The first day of Finnish Film Affair’s 2026 programme offered panels focused on sustainability, creative development, international collaboration and the changing financing landscape of the film industry.

In a fireside chat on global franchising, moderated by Marta Balaga, filmmakers Danny Cannon (CSI franchise, Gotham) and Jodi Hildebrand (Marvel, Condé Nast) discussed co-productions and how original stories can evolve into global franchises. Among the other insights, they pointed out how the key is to put all the great ideas into the script at hand, rather than saving them for a potential next one.

The first day of FFA also marked the start of Nordic Flair, which welcomed a group of Nordic producers for three intensive days of learning and connections.

The day concluded with a glass of bubbly at the opening reception, followed by an opening Screening to a full house at Bio Rex Lasipalatsi. This year's opening film was Hanna Bergholm's spine-tingling Berlinale Competition title, Nightborn. The screening also served as a National Gala screening of the Love & Anarchy Festival.

Thursday 24 September at Finnish Film Affair 🎬

✨ The second day of FFA brings us to the main event: Showcase! Our showcase presents a selection of the most promising projects from Finland, the Nordics, and beyond. On Thursday, 38 projects will take the stage at the lovely Bio Rex Lasipalatsi.

🏆 FFA celebrates outstanding projects with nine amazing awards! The four different Best Project Awards sponsored by the Finnish Film Foundation, AVEK Audiovisual Centre, Amos Anderson Fund, Post Control Helsinki, and Angel Films.

🏆 FFA has also the honour to present four exciting Industry Awards sponsored by Marché du Film Producers Network, MIDPOINT Institute, Connecting Cottbus, and Göteborg Film Festival.

Finnish Film Affair has many wonderful side programmes running alongside the main programme. One the side programme's this year is the Filmmakers EU:

Local roots. Global Roles. The international casting workshop is organized in collaboration with the Digital Creative Industries and Beyond project.

The Digital Creative Industries and Beyond project provides a platform for strengthening collaboration and co-creation between digital and creative industries. The project offers concrete support measures and guidance to help early-stage and internationally growth-oriented companies in the digital creative sectors enhance their business operations and scale up production.

The project is implemented by the City of Helsinki in partnership with Metropolia University of Applied Sciences and Aalto University. The project is co-funded by the European Union.
