Finnish Film Affair (FFA) is the bold, bubbly and beloved industry event of the Helsinki International Film Festival – Love & Anarchy.

For over a decade, FFA has been a must-visit September market for film professionals worldwide, offering a daring, fresh, and delightfully extravagant showcase of Finnish and Nordic film. In 2024, FFA is diving headfirst into the hottest trends like AI, transmedia, innovative financing models and layered storytelling. The 13th Finnish Film Affair will take place in September 2024.

And just like that, the fifth edition of the Söderlångvik Masterclass came to a close✨

The weekend consisted of a beautiful few days amongst the apple orchards of Söderlångvik, filled with an exchange of knowledge, ideas, perspectives, and a fair bit of laughter too. A huge, heartfelt thank you to the one and only Trine Dyrholm for bringing her extraordinary generosity and wisdom to the masterclass, and to Marta Balaga, who once again effortlessly moderated the entire process. The fifth edition was all about deepening the collaboration between directors and actors, and this weekend did just that, bringing our wonderful group of participants together from all over the Nordics.

📣 CALL FOR PROJECTS: APPLY BY June 5!

Are you currently working on a feature film with international potential? Are you looking for a sales agent or co-producers? Do you want to pitch your project to international guests? Now's your chance!

We invite you to apply for the Finnish Film Affair’s Showcase Day, where you can pitch your fiction and documentary projects and a variety of other projects both in development and production. The 15th Finnish Film Affair will take place in Helsinki from September 23–25, 2025, and the Showcase Day is Thursday 24th.

We accept projects from Finland, as well as projects with Finland as the minority production country.

Introducing the participants of the fifth Söderlångvik Masterclass! 🌞

We are thrilled to welcome six directors and six actors to the fifth Söderlångvik Masterclass, led by legendary Danish actor Trine Dyrholm.

Trine will lead the Nordic filmmakers into a deep dive on the creative dialogue between director and actor, and the shared process of building a character. The three-day masterclass is held in Amos Anderson’s summer residence in the beautiful Kimito Island on 7–10 May.

Dyrholm’s latest films, Beginnings and Second Victims will be screened at Helsinki International Film Festival - Love & Anarchy at Bio Rex Lasipalatsi on 7 May, including a discussion with Dyrholm, led by moderator Marta Bałaga.

Söderlångvik Masterclass is a residency initiative developed by the arts fund Amos Andersons fond in collaboration with Helsinki International Film Festival — Love & Anarchy.

OPEN CALL: SÖDERLÅNGVIK MASTERCLASS

This spring, Söderlångvik Masterclass brings together 12 directors and actors to explore creative dialogue, focusing on the shared process of building a character. The residency offers a rare opportunity to examine the actor-director dynamic in depth. The masterclass will be guided by Dyrholm's extensive experience in film, television, and theatre.

▪️WHAT? The Söderlångvik Masterclass call is open for Nordic-based actors and directors with prior professional experience.

▪️WHEN? The masterclass is held from 7–10 May 2026. Last day to apply is Sunday, 5 April.

▪️ WHERE? The three-day residency gathers participants in Finland, both in Helsinki and on Kimito Island, at the historic and breathtaking grounds of the Söderlångvik estate.

The 14th edition of Finnish Film Affair broke delegate records and brought together 550 film industry professionals from 25 countries, hosted over 230 meetings and presented 45 current projects from Finland, Nordics and beyond. 💫

At its core, Finnish Film Affair was created to support filmmakers in building stronger success stories. For three full days from 24–26 September, Helsinki transformed into a dynamic meeting point for film industry professionals across the world.

Thank you all for joining us in celebrating the art of filmmaking and for exploring new connections and insights. The FFA team warmly thanks each and every one of our wonderful guests, sponsors, and volunteers for inspiring, fulfilling, and sparkling three days! 💙

🍂 The last day of FFA was packed with insightful panels and discussions. 🍂

☕️ The morning began with coffee and conversation at the Scandic Helsinki Hub, where Women in Film & Television presented their equality tool. Liisa Holmberg of the International Sámi Film Institute brought Indigenous perspectives to the table, emphasizing the importance of having the means to tell our own stories.

💡These closing sessions of Nordic Flair took place in the inspiring Amos Anderson Home Museum, kindly provided by Konstsamfundet. Over three intensive days in Helsinki, ten emerging producers from the Nordics dived into creative collaboration, sustainable careers and festival strategies.

🎥 The panels at Gilda Cinema focused on distribution and navigating a transformed industry, as well as a case study of Eagles of the Republic and the challenges of making a political film in a politically controversial environment.

🥂 To close the 14th edition of FFA, we raised a glass of bubbly at the Closing Reception, hosted by Europe-Asia Roundtable Sessions (EARS).

💙 The FFA team warmly thanks each and every one of our wonderful guests for inspiring, fulfilling, and sparkling three days!

🍂 Day two of FFA brought 44 fascinating, internationally promising projects to the stage at Bio Rex Lasipalatsi on Thursday, 25 September. 🍂

🎬 Our Showcase Day featured great pitches across all six categories: Focus on Finland - Series, Fiction in Progress, Nordic Selection, Fiction in Development, Documentaries, and F-Weird.

🔥 We also welcomed a MPI resident filmmaker to FFA for the fifth time. This year, Helena Aleksandrova presented her project Flame Game in the Showcase Day.

💡 Nordic Flair participants also continued with their sessions throughout the day.

🎤️ The award ceremony took place at our famous Löyly Sauna Party, and the evening culminated in an Industry Afterparty, where the participants danced, sang karaoke, and played minigolf late into the night at Helsinki Camping – Minigolf Bar & Nightclub.

On Thursday, 25 September, we celebrated our Showcase Day and presented seven fantastic awards at our legendary Löyly Sauna Party.

✨Friday, 26 September at Finnish Film Affair✨

🍂It’s the third and the last day of FFA, but don't worry! We still have many insightful panels and bubbly networking lined up.

💡We’ll start the day at Scandic Helsinki Hub lounge with a fresh cup of coffee and a conversation about diversity in the film industry when Women in Film & Television take the stand to discuss their new equality tool. Liisa Holmberg of the International Sami Film Institute will also bring food for thought on where such diversity stands amongst the indigenous film industry. Following these, the discussion will be opened up to audience thoughts.

📽️After the morning discussion, we’ll move back to Gilda to enjoy some thought-provoking panels on distribution and co-production, among other things.

❗️Please note that Claire Willats was unable to attend FFA and will not be joining the XYZ Masterclass. Taking Claire’s place in the panel, Dome Karukoski will definitely be bringing unique insight into the discussion about navigating the changing film industry.

🍂Sadly all good things must come to an end! To wrap up three wonderful days of panels, projects and a whole variety of mingling, FFA will host a closing reception at the event’s official hotel Scandic Helsinki Hun hosted by EARS.
