Discussing World Politics

Discussing World Politics Discussing World Politics is a Forum based in Helsinki and Berlin. We host open discussions on issues in contemporary politics. No one is pushed to speak.

Discussing World Politics invites you to join us in lively discussions on matters of international politics. We host several events during the year with representatives from academia, media, politics and civil society, providing expert insight on the topics of discussion. What do we mean by 'discussion' and does everyone have to discuss? Is every event held in the same manner? Although we do occas

ionally co-organize conferences and lectures, the typical concept of our own events is the discussion. How it goes

About twice a month the DWP organizing team chooses a topic of interest to discuss. 1 to 3 speakers/panellists are invited to give insights on the topic prior to the discussion. The moderator introduces the panellists and the topic at the beginning, then each panellist introduces the topic in 10-15 minutes before we open the floor to all. We dedicate over 90 minutes of the event to the discussion. The speakers elaborate more on the topic during the discussion. Everyone is welcome to express their opinion, make a statement, test an argument or pose a question. Since the turn-out at our events have grown, we cannot always have the discussions entirely free of rules. Requests to speak can be signalled to the moderator by a side glance or by raising your hand. Participation in the discussion is not obligatory. How can you benefit? This format becomes especially interesting when the panellists are high-level decision makers or professionals because it provides a unique opportunity for the audience to engage closely with people they would otherwise not have a chance to meet. We believe that the emphasis we put on the discussion part distinguishes us from the standard university or public lectures and creates a unique and informative interaction. Some of our previous speakers have been, the renowned international law professor, Martti Koskenniemi, former Ambassador of Japan to the US and President of the America-Japan Society, Ichiro Fujisaki, YLE Correspondent, Tom Kankkonen, CMI middle east analyst, Mikko Patokallio and professors like Teivo Teivainen and Timo Kivimäki among others. The discussions are free of charge. To support us or to become more involved, you are most welcome to become a DWP member. We also organize members only networking events and trips.
