Aalto Works has been inscribed to the UNESCO World Heritage List! ✨

Today, in their meeting in Busan, Republic of Korea, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee has decided to inscribe the Aalto Works series on the World Heritage List. The property comprises 13 modern architectural sites across Finland designed by Alvar, Aino and Elissa Aalto.

The Aalto Works series represents the Aaltos’ humanistic modernism and highlights the role of architecture in the development of the welfare society. At the same time, it reflects the Aaltos’ significant contribution to the international evolution of modern architecture.

Aalto Works comprises: Studio Aalto, The Aalto House, Finlandia Hall, National Pensions Institute (KELA), House of Culture (Kulttuuritalo) in Helsinki; Jyväskylä University Aalto Campus, Muuratsalo Experimental House and Säynätsalo Town Hall in Jyväskylä; Paimio Sanatorium; Seinäjoki Civic Centre; Sunila Residential Area in Kotka; Villa Mairea in Pori; and the Church of Three Crosses in Imatra.

“The inscription of Aalto Works on the UNESCO World Heritage List is a significant international recognition of Finnish modern architecture. It raises awareness of the Aaltos’ work and Finland’s cultural heritage and expertise in architecture. At the same time, it commits us to safeguarding our cultural heritage in the long term so that we transmit this unique legacy to future generations. It also opens up new opportunities for cooperation and tourism. I hope it will encourage people from Finland and abroad alike to discover these exceptional Aalto sites,” says Mari-Leena Talvitie, Minister of Science and Culture, in a press release issued this morning.

Archinfo congratulates all those who have worked long and hard to achieve the listing, as well as all the 13 Aalto sites!!

We’ve picked some public saunas for you to admire and enjoy this summer while Archinfo is on holiday in July.🌞

📍 Serlachius Art Sauna (Mänttä-Vilppula 2022)

After winning the competition to design the Gösta Museum, the Spanish architects teamed up with Finnish colleagues to create the Art Sauna.

The Art Sauna reflects Finland’s new sauna culture, replacing quiet cleansing with a pursuit of memorable experiences and socialising. Built in concrete instead of logs, it reimagines the traditional sauna experience. An outdoor path leads visitors to the lakeshore sauna through a sculpture park.

Lonna Sauna is situated on an island a short waterbus ride away from Helsinki Market Square. Until 2016, the island was occupied by the Finnish army, after which it was opened to the public.

The compact building has a handcrafted wooden log structure left bare and a sculptural pitched roof in zinc plate. The steam rooms have wood-burning stoves, which offer an authentic bathing experience while enjoying the view to the sea.

: Did you know the Finnish sauna used to be the cleanest space in the household which is why it wasn’t just a place for bathing, but also for childbirth, caring for the sick and the deceased? Today, saunas are all about relaxation, wellbeing and recovery, and they remain an integral part of everyday life.
We’ve picked some public saunas for you to admire and enjoy this summer while Archinfo is on holiday in July!🌞

📍 Sauna-restaurant Kiulu (Ähtäri 2022)

Built to attract more visitors in Ähtäri, this timber building is carefully integrated into its landscape and embraces the surrounding nature. A spacious wooden terrace with stepped seating and granite boulders at the water’s edge provides a viewpoint to take in the lakeside landscape.
The dark interior evokes the atmosphere of Finland’s smoke saunas while a full-width horizontal window frames uninterrupted views of the lake and surrounding forest, bringing nature into the heart of the sauna experience.

Busy days at the New European Bauhaus Festival in Brussels! 🔥

In the Fair section at the Musée Art & Histoire, we have a stand together with the NEB4All project, a network of 27 National Contact Points. Welcome to visit us at stand 47!

Yesterday we held a panel discussion on the role and future directions of the NCPs, followed by a workshop. The event was moderated by our NCP colleague Ana Goletiani from the ministry of Education, Science and Youth, Georgia.

The speakers were:
Androniki Papaterpou, Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas, Greece;
Roxana Proca, Ministry of Culture, Romania;
Olesia Skliarenko, Hryhorii Skovoroda University in Pereiaslav, Ukraine;
Angela Wieser, Austrian Research Promotion Agency, Austria.

It was amazing to see a full house of workshoppers engaging so actively in the topics. Warm thanks to all participants! ❤️

This week, Archinfo is part of the New European Bauhaus Festival in Brussels, the cradle of democracy. 🌿

The NEB Festival was opened today, Tuesday 9 June, by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, and António Costa, President of the European Council.

”What started six years ago has become a real movement. The commitment is there — and so is creativity,” said von der Leyen.

”Sustainability is the baseline of everything in the New European Bauhaus. Making new out of old, turning waste into value. Circular buildings can make a huge difference for communities as well as the planet.”

The Festival, taking place at the Musée Art & Histoire, gathers professionals, experts, and decision makers to discuss the built environment’s role in Europe’s green deal. Starting from tomorrow, Wednesday, the Festival’s Fair section invites everyone interested in the NEB themes — Beautiful, Sustainable, Together — to join workshops and explore dozens of inspiring exhibitions.

The third NEB Festival’s Finnish participation includes Aalto University with the exhibition Pathfinders, the University of Oulu at the NEBULE stand, Metropolia University of Applied Sciences with the project NEB Stewardship Lab, and Archinfo as the national NEB contact point and partner in the NEB4All project.

🇫🇮 Emmi on uusi viestintäharjoittelijamme!

Oulun yliopistossa arkkitehtuuria opiskelevaa Emmiä innostavat erityisesti korjausrakentaminen, kirjoittaminen ja keskustelut arkkitehtuurin ympärillä. Viime talven hän vietti vaihto-opiskelijana Saksassa, ja siellä hänessä heräsi kiinnostus yhteiskunnalliseen vaikuttamiseen arkkitehtuurin keinoin. Niinpä Archinfo onkin hänelle oikein sopiva harjoittelupaikka!

Videolla Emmi kertoo haaveilevansa tulevalla urallaan monipuolisista työtehtävistä, ja niitäkin hän pääsee harjoittelemaan jo Archinfossa. Toivotamme Emmin lämpimästi tervetulleeksi joukkoomme kesän ja alkusyksyn ajaksi!

🇬🇧 Emmi is our new communications intern!

The fourth-year architecture student at the University of Oulu is particularly interested in building conservation, writing, and architectural discourse. Last winter, she spent a semester as an exchange student in Germany, where she became inspired by architecture’s potential for societal impact. That makes Emmi a perfect fit as an intern for Archinfo!

In the video, Emmi shares her hopes for a future career with a wide variety of tasks – and at Archinfo, she already gets to put that versatility into practice. We warmly welcome Emmi to our team for the summer and early autumn!
