Sneak Peak…
Feral Labs Node Book #3: Fa Fa Futures
Look out for a launch event in Helsinki in Autumn 2026!

Feral Labs Node Book #3: Fa Fa Futures is the third in series of publications by the Feral Lab Network, a network of organisations that came together through their common interest in art-science research and contemporary do-it-yourself (DIY) and do-it-with-others (DIWO) communities. The network first collaborated in the project Feral Labs (2019–2022) in which Node Book #1: Rewilding Cultures was published. Node Book #2: Feralities was published in 2024. The publication series is a part of Creative Europe project Rewilding Cultures (2022–2026).

Feral Labs Node Book #3: Fa Fa Futures contributors include: Dalila Honorato, Iakovos Panagopolous, Ewen Chardronnet, Chelsea C**n, Sergey Dmitriev, Tina Dolinšek, Martyna Groth, Emma Hallemans, Steffan Jones Hughes, WhiteFeather Hunter, Veroniki Korakidou, Rita de Almeide Leite, Matheus de Rocha Montanari, Prathima Muniyappa, Sabina Oroshi, Andrew Gryf Paterson, Irene Posch, Anna Isaak-Ross, Mario Savini, Maja Smrekar, Clare Stott, Camila Torralbo, Uroš Veber, Sophia Vrioni and Adam Zaretsky.

“This division has been a construct of the “nation state”, not of the beings that are, were, and will be the original inhabitants of these lands. Borders I previously knew from maps suddenly felt irrelevant. Insects, after all, also do not recognize these man-made borders. For Hankikorri, movement is not determined by states, but by terrain.”

Bioart Society’s programme assistant Lukáš Karaba shares his research as part of a Bioart Society case study residency at Kilpisjärvi Biological Station. Combining fieldwork, macrophotography and video, he reflects on human and non-human perspectives, while considering how place, perception, and borders are shaped through situated encounters.

Following this year's reframing and restructuring of our long-term residency programme Ars Bioarctica in collaboration with Kilpisjärvi Biological Station, to better align it with their seasonal work and long term monitoring projects, we were delighted to have such a positive response to the open call. We received many inspiring and intentional proposals seeking to initiate or continue site responsive research in Gilbbesjávri.

The selection panel consisted of Bioart Society staff Yvonne Billimore, Eliisa Suvanto, Lukáš Karaba, board member Aleksija Neimanis and Ars Bioarctica local host Leena Valkeapää. We read the applications with real interest and want to thank everyone who applied.

A total 18 projects / 22 practitioners were selected for residencies between November 2026 and November 2027, including: Camille Auer, Alan Bogana, Bettina Bruder, Penelope Cain, Elena Cirkovic, Corinna Dean, Cyane Findji & Myriam Gras, Angela Fragkou, Scott Howarth, Kana Kobayashi, Hans Kuzmich, Nina Liebenberg, Egle Oddo, Sonia Ralston, Christina Stadlbauer & François Zajéga, Sororitas ex Mycelio (Tosca Terán & L. Puska), Thomas Westphal & Uli Westphal, and Maria Ångerman.

Find the link in bio to read more about their research interests and proposals.

We’re happy to welcome our trainee, Tuija Huovinen (), who joined our team as a programme assistant in May.

Tuija Huovinen is a curator, traditional sauna healer and writer who currently studies in the Praxis Master’s Program at the Academy of Fine Arts. Huovinen’s curatorial practice is rooted in site-sensitive and hydrofeminist thinking, merging relational arts, deep ecology, storytelling and spiritual technologies. Huovinen understands and explores ethical curatorial work as fostering spaces in which enchantment, sensuous experiences, and imagination can become active catalysts for alternative ways of thinking, community-building, and care. Her Master’s thesis examines site-sensitive ecological thinking in relation to curatorial and artistic processes.

At Bioart Society Tuija will contribute to the programme and the hosted events, and deepen her knowledge and experience in sustainable curatorial approach. Tuija will be working with BAS until September.

Join us for Janne Halme’s () member’s event; an evening of botanical solar cells, analogue slide projections, fieldwork, and ecological imagination!
Wednesday, 27 May, 6–8 pm at SOLU Space

Photovoltarium projections is an open studio in which artist, researcher, and educator Janne Halme presents his evolving artistic practice. The evening includes experimental projection installations created with plant-based solar cell materials, material and process samples from the studio practice, herbarium-related references, artist talk, discussion, and informal technical demonstrations with analogue slide projectors. At the centre of the work is an ongoing exploration of how renewable energy technologies, plants, ecological fieldwork, and artistic practice might open new forms of attentiveness, curiosity, and care toward the living world.

Food and drinks will be served.

Registration by 25 May via form (link in bio)

Location(s): Bioart Society's SOLU Space, 3rd floor, Panimokatu 1, 00580
/ Zoom

We have been loving this book and the conversations its sparked!

For this last one we are going to test a hybrid format, so come along to SOLU Space if in Helsinki or if further afield or unable to come to SOLU Space for any reason to join us online.

If you have missed either or both of the previous sessions don't worry, in this session we reflect on the book through the final chapter, post-script and end notes so they should give you a good way into the discussion. In the session we will also read sections of the text aloud.

Reading (27 pages*):
Chapter 5: Systems Biology p.73-84
Postscript: Neural Networks and AΙ p.85-90
Endnotes p.91-100

To receive the zoom link and a copy of the text in advance contact [email protected] at least two days before the session occurs.

You can also purchase the book via the becoming press website should you like your own printed copy (which we would recommend!)

Yesterday we hosted a combo visit from Learning Materials artists and Art School MAA students ().

During our time together, artists Krišjānis Elviks () and Aistė Gaidilionytė & Kamilė Vasiliauskaitė ( ) shared their practices and offered a glimpse into the processes and ideas they have been developing during their residency at HIAP ().

It was a generous exchange and an opportunity for the students to encounter artistic practices in progress, and for the residents to reflect on their ongoing research together.

After some time developing the Learning Materials project with our partners we are delighted to welcome Krišjānis Elviks, Aistė Gaidilionytė & Kamilė Vasiliauskaitė and Paula Zvane to Helsinki as the first artists to engage in what will become a multi year project.

Joining us from Latvia and Lithuania with support of the Nordic Culture Point, they will participate in 3 month residencies at HIAP - Helsinki International Artist Programme culminating in a multi-day gathering at TUO TUO, with the support, networks and resources of fellow partners Bioart Society, Koynẽ Program, and SWAMP: Art Material and Waste Management Point

Last week we gathered for the HIAP welcome lunch and presentations, where they along with the other (brilliant) residents of this season presented on how they plan to work within the project which asks how we might work with materials differently—by attending to their legacies, agencies, and entanglements.

Building on his scenographic background and work with second-hand textiles Krišjānis Elvik will explore how large-scale installations can exist without traditional materials. Aistė Gaidilionytė and Kamilė Vasiliauskaitė, a creative duo with architectural backgrounds in architecture, will be making and thinking-with ‘pretend wood’ as part of their practice investigating contemporary building materials. Paula Zvane will continue researching sustainable biomaterials, focusing on kombucha leather, plant fibres, and natural hardening agents.

Across the partners we will be connecting them with local practitioners and organisations, they will each host a lab/workshop during their residencies, as well as share their work at HIAPs open studios in June. There will also be opportunities to meet them during the partners various activities over the spring-summer period. If you have a special interest to connect do get in touch!

Greetings from Gilbbesjávri!

This week, our trainee Lukas is conducting research at the Kilpisjärvi Biological Station as part of a case study residency for Bioart Society. During his stay, he explores both human and non-human perspectives on the environment, while reflecting on the ethics of fieldwork.

Lukas combines this inquiry with his artistic practice, working with macrophotography and video, alongside developing a series of small, place-based reflections that gather observations, fragments, and questions from specific sites. Rather than only asking what is there, his approach considers what each place asks in return, shaping a more attentive and reciprocal way of being in the field.
