Mogadishu: A City Drowning in Corruption, Abandoned by Its Leaders
By Aydarus Elmi Abukar
Mogadishu — once the Pearl of the Indian Ocean — now bleeds under the weight of betrayal, corruption, and failed leadership.
Our city has survived decades of civil war and destruction. But survival is not enough. What we are witnessing today is not peace — it is decay hidden behind silence. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and his unqualified henchman Amir have turned Mogadishu into a playground for organized crime. Amir, a former phone salesman with no education, no experience, and no vision, acts as a mayor in a city he has neither the heart nor the mind to serve.
The roads are gone. A simple rainfall of 14 centimeters has caused death and devastation. People drowned. Homes collapsed. Streets vanished. The infrastructure of our capital city cannot even withstand a mild storm — a shameful reality in 2025.
And what about our youth?
There are no jobs. No education. No opportunities. A whole generation is being buried alive under poverty and hopelessness. Social media has become their only source of income — a wild, lawless space where anything goes, where there is no moral compass, no guidance, no dignity. While pharmacies pop up on every corner like fast-food stalls, real schools, real jobs, real futures are nowhere to be found.
Yet, we are told to prepare for elections. Elections? In a city where security is a luxury, where roads are blocked, and people fear for their lives just walking outside? How can “one man, one vote” exist in a place where most cannot speak freely or move safely?
Look at cities like Kigali. Once torn apart by genocide, now rebuilt with order, vision, and national pride. Even Sarajevo, destroyed by war, has risen again through resilience and real leadership. Why not Mogadishu? Why not us?
Because we are ruled by men who have no interest in building — only in stealing.
Mogadishu deserves a rebirth. Our people deserve leaders, not criminals. We need roads, schools, hospitals, jobs — not lies, not puppets, not silence.
To the youth of Mogadishu: You are not forgotten. But your future will not be handed to you. You must rise and demand it.
Stand up, Mogadishu. The time to reclaim your city .
