DocPoint - Helsinki Documentary Film Festival is coming! 🚀 Here are our three recommendations to check out for free at the festival:
1️⃣ DocPoint x Yle Teema: Saimaa-ilmiö, Wed. 4.2. at 21.00 in Bio Rex Lasipalatsi. Finnish-only. Reserve a free ticket in-advance!
In Aki and Mika Kaurismäki’s film classic, drinking is only part of the story. As Rolf Jacksen famously put it, the nights are filled with “bloody intense nocturnal philosophising”, while a drunken boat circles Lake Saimaa like Mercury orbiting our star. Between live gigs by Juice Leskinen & Slam, Eppu Normaali, and Hassisen Kone, cigarette smoke billows and tongues wag incessantly.
2️⃣ Dajori, Wed. 4.2. at 16.00 in Lumosali. English subtitles. No reservation.
Directed with great understanding by Marti Páv and Nicolas Kourek, Dajori tells about the everyday life of a Romani couple. In addition to their own children, the couple is raising two of the wife's sister's nine children, as the children's father is in prison and the mother is unable to take care of them. The other children live with the other siblings of the wife.
3️⃣ Claudia Has Bad Dreams, Wed. 4.2. at 18.00 in Vuotalo. English subtitles. No reservation.
Claudia and Eleonora, two sisters in their thirties, head to the mountains of Sicily to do some hiking and reflect on their shared past. Old drawings and home videos portray them as inseparable siblings who, in the present, have drifted apart. Tensions within the family dynamics are present at every moment, many of them related to Claudia’s unwillingness to seek help for her crack addiction.
