Welcome to the next Anti-Zionist Learning Circle!! It’s on Thursday 19.2. at 17.45-20.00 in Theater Academy and the topic for the spring is Global Palestine! In February we focus on Arab states, solidarities and problems of solidarity, which prepares us nicely for the March gathering about Rojava and Palestine.

Pyrkimyksissämme kohti akateemista boikottia, Opiskelijaliikkeemme sitoutuu Apartheidista vapaaksi alueeksi. Kehotamme myös muita opiskelijajärjestöjä ja yliopistoja sitoutumaan näihin periaatteisiin.

Eilinen oli hieno päivä Palestiinan solidaarisuuden puolesta Suomessa. Opiskelijat, tutkijat ja henkilökunta ympäri maata nousivat puolustamaan vapaata Palestiinaa ja vaativat omia instituutioitaan katkaisemaan siteensä kolonialismiin, miehitykseen, apartheidiin ja kansanmurhaan.

Helsingissä noin 750 opiskelijaa marssi ulos luennoiltaan kaikilla viidellä kampuksella, ja kokoontui Helsingin yliopiston päärakennukselle.

Opiskelijat puhuivat unelmastaan yliopistosta, jossa jokaisen ääntä kuunnellaan. Yliopistosta, joka taistelee sortoa vastaan sen rahoittamisen sijaan.

Askeleet, jotka sadat opiskelijat eilen ottivat ulos luokistaan ja kirjastoista, toteuttavat huomenna tämän unelman.

Helsingin ulosmarssiin liittyi ympäri maan protesteja, jotka kaikki vaativat institutionaalisten siteiden katkaisemista rikoksiin syyllisiin israelilaisiin instituutioihin.

Tampereella sadat opiskelijat marssivat ulos protestoidakseen yliopiston osasyyllisyyyttä Israelin rikoksiin. Lisäksi Tampereen yliopiston tieteentekijät liittyi BDS/PACBI:n akateemisen boikotin vaatimuksiin.
Turussa ihmiset kokoontuivat suremaan Gazan kansanmurhan uhreja ja keskustelemaan siellä tapahtuvasta koulusjärjestelmän tuhoamisesta.
Kuopion, Jyväskylän ja Oulun kampuksilla nähtiin myös toimintaa.
Viimeisimpänä, Lapin yliopisto järjesti digitaalisen koulutustapahtuman

Opiskelijoiden vaatimus on voimakas ja selkeä.

Mikään tutkimus maailmassa ei oikeuta palestiinalaisten sortoa. Mitään tutkimusta maailmassa ei tule kustantaa palestiinalaisten verellä.

Kansanmurha näkyy Horisontissa ja meidän on vaihdettava kurssia! Me opiskelijat emme lopeta, ennen kuin palestiinalaisilla ja meillä yhdessä näkyy horisontissa valoisampi tulevaisuus.

Yesterday was a great day for Palestine solidarity in Finland. Students, researchers and staff across the country stood up for a Free Palestine and demanded the end of their own institutions’ ties to colonialism, occupation, apartheid and genocide.

In Helsinki around 750 students walked out of their lectures on all 5 campuses, to then gather at the University of Helsinki’s main building.

The students spoke of their dream of a university where their voices are heard. A university that fights oppression instead of funding it.

The steps that hundreds of students took steps out of their classrooms and libraries yesterday will realise that dream tomorrow.

The walkout in Helsinki was joined by protests all over the country, which all demanded the end of institutional academic ties with complicit and criminal Israeli institutions.

In Tampere hundreds of students walked out to protest their university’s complicity in Israel’s crimes. Additionally, the Tampere researchers union joined the BDS / PACBI demand for academic boycott.

In Turku people gathered to mourn the victims of the Gaza genocide and to talk about the scholasticide taking place there.

Kuopio, Jyväskylä and Oulu campuses also saw action.

Finally, the University of Lapland organized a digital educational event!

Students’ call remands loud and clear.

No research in the world justifies Palestinian oppression. No research in the world is worth paying for with Palestinian blood.

There’s genocide in Horizon and we must change course! We the students will not stop until Palestinians and we together have brighter futures on our horizons.

The University of Helsinki is directly enabling the erasure of Palestinian culture and history through its co-operation with Israeli academia.
In Towers of Ivory and Steel, Maya Wind argues that Israeli universities do not function only as educational institutions, but as an integral part of a wider apartheid state system that shapes Palestinian dispossession. The political economy of Israeli academia, the militarization of research, and the institutional dynamics shape academia under apartheid. The universities become involved in systems of racism: cultural erasure, legitimization of apartheid policies, and military research and development.

Israeli universities frequently contribute to the erasure of Palestinian culture and identity. Their institutions are built on stolen land depopulated during or after 1948, without acknowledgement of the prior Palestinian presence. The Hebrew University’s Mount Scopus campus and the University of Haifa’s expansion into Palestinian areas are just two examples of many. These practices normalize an environment in which Palestinian history is obscured or made irrelevant. Israeli archaeology, anthropology, and geography programs have pushed narratives of ancient Jewish indigeneity while denying actual historical Palestinian continuity. The lack of Palestinian faculty representation, limited access for Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza, and disciplinary frameworks that reproduce Israeli narratives further reinforce forms of cultural silencing within academia.

Israeli academia has been playing a legitimizing role in an apartheid system. The Israeli state mechanisms administer different rights and mobility between Israelis and Palestinians. University programs collaborate with governmental agencies and genocidal military, producing expertise that is used to rationalize security doctrines governing checkpoints, surveillance, and settler colonialism.

In the spring of 2024 Student Union (HYY) joined the demand of Academic Boycott of Israel. This fall researchers’ Union (HUART) also decided to support this demand!

This pressure has made University of Helsinki finally admit to the problematic nature of Horizon Europe funded research collaboration with these institutions. University of Helsinki has joined an appeal demanding the immeadiate suspension of EU-Israel Association agreement, and thus also exclusion of Israel from Horizon Europe. Yet, University has still to implement similar measures in their own institution. There still remains 15 ongoing research collaborations with complicit Israeli institutions as partners receiving EU funding. Likewise there has been no change in policy of accepting future collaborations with these problematic instutions. This must change!

What is needed now is concrete action! Let’s support & encourage our University to take much needed steps towards more just University.

On 3rd of December students and staff walk out for this demand. ALREADY OVER 700 Students have committed to the walkout, and even more expressed definite support for the implementation of Academic byocott in their own university.

For too long have Israeli academic institutions complicit in crimes of apartheid & occupation and deeply entangled with Israeli military industrial complex now guilty of Genocide, been able to receive EU funding through Horizon Europe programme.

For too long have students of finnish universities been silenced and ignored while neoliberalisation of University has eroded our dear institutions.

NO MORE! Over 500 students have already committed to collective action. Student, WALKOUT with your fellow students, and demand termination of problematic ties to complicit Israeli Institutions and make your voice heard!
