The 19% share of female nominees for the 2027 Prize is our second highest ever, a testament to the incredible women changing our world with technology and a positive sign that a focus on diversity works. 👩‍🔬

Yet, a clear imbalance still exists in the field.

Let’s use this moment to both applaud the progress and renew our collective commitment to championing female innovators everywhere. A future where innovation flourishes is one where talent has no gender. Let’s build it together. 💛

Looking back at the beginning of the year, one of the brightest highlights was our science and innovation discussion event at the Embassy of Finland in Singapore. This marked the third year in a row that we have organised the event — and this time, we were especially pleased to collaborate with our first international university partner, Nanyang Technological University Singapore.

🎥 Watch the recap video below!

We had the honour of hosting exceptional panellists: two Millennium Technology Prize winners, Professors Bantval Jayant Baliga and David Klenerman, together with the Vice President and Distinguished Professor Ernst Kuipers from the Nanyang Technological University Singapore, and doctoral researcher Anastasiia Kushnarova-Vakal from the University of Turku.

The event was organised during the wonderful Global Young Scientists Summit (GYSS), hosted by the National Research Foundation Singapore. We are also proud partners of the GYSS, and this year we sent 12 promising young researchers from Finland to this truly global and cross-sectoral gathering. They actively participated in our discussion event as well, building important connections for their future careers.

Innovation. Inspiration. Impact.

The 2018 Millennium Technology Prize honored Dr. Tuomo Suntola for his ALD innovation. Our digital world, powered by ever-shrinking and increasingly potent devices, owes a significant debt to him. Thanks to his pioneering Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) technology, our IT equipment has become smaller, more powerful, and less expensive – driving innovation from smartphones to cloud computing. This technology creates nanoscale thin material layers for microprocessors and digital memory, enabling complex 3D structures one atomic layer at a time. This breakthrough has been instrumental in advancing Moore's Law, consistently pushing computing boundaries. Beyond computers and smartphones, ALD's versatility impacts other high-tech sectors, improving solar panels, LEDs, electric car batteries, and medical instruments.

January 2026 was a very special one for us, as the Millennium Technology Prize got the opportunity to be represented at the World Economic Forum in Davos for the first time, as proud partners of the Finnish Flow initiative and Davos Club.

Our mission in Davos was to strengthen Finland’s position as a global leader in technology and innovation together with our strategic partner Business Finland, and to share our values throught the Millennium Technology Prize, the world's leading innovation prize.

The highlight for us in Davos was the keynote that our CEO Maija Liiri delivered in one of the events, right after the Foreign Minister of Finland, Elina Valtonen.

“True impact requires ecosystems – where science, industry, investors, and policymakers move forward together. The Millennium Technology Prize is evolving into exactly that,” Maija Liiri said in her speech.

The 2014 Millennium Technology Prize was awarded to Professor Stuart Parkin for his groundbreaking discoveries that enabled a thousand-fold increase in the storage capacity of magnetic disk drives.

Professor Parkin's innovations have profoundly transformed our digital world, underpinning the evolution of large data centres, cloud services, social networks, and the online distribution of music and film. Thanks to his work on spintronic devices, including the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) spin-valve read head, we can now stream movies, use social media, and search information on the internet with unprecedented ease and efficiency. This cost-efficient method of storing vast amounts of data is a cornerstone of our contemporary online experience.
