Maailma-kuoro Maailma-kuoro is a joyous, multicultural, and music-loving choir of treble voices! Auditions for new members are held several times a year.

Maailma-kuoro is a vibrant multicultural choir of descant voices established in Helsinki in 2010. In its unique and inspiring style Maailma-kuoro performs a ca****la renditions of global music capturing strong melodies and soulful harmonies as well as telling stories to reflect the diversity of our community. Jennifer Moir has been Maailma-kuoro's artistic director since fall 2024, but in Sunday's concert we will have our assistant conductor Bláthnaid on stage as well.

Bláthnaid is a choir conductor, singer and pianist from Ireland, living in Helsinki. She is about to graduate from the Sibelius Academy with a master’s degree in choral conducting. Bláthnaid has been accompanist and assistant conductor to Maailmakuoro since 2024 and has had the pleasure of conducting them in concerts in Helsinki and Kaustinen Folk Festival. She is honoured to be part of this wonderful community and to make powerful music with Jennifer and Maailmakuoro!

Bláthnaid will conduct a piece called Songbird in our concert on Sunday.

"Songbird is a piece by Canadian composer Sarah Quartel. The song begins with the voice of the bird inviting us to come and listen to the music, and then changes to the voice of the listeners (us) describing the playful and enchanting scenes of the songbirds calling us in. I especially love the groove of this piece that drops in and out in the accompanying voices. It reminds us of our connection to nature - how it is ever present in our creation of art and music."

Jennifer Moir on toiminut Maailma-kuoron taiteellisena johtajana syksystä 2024 lähtien. Tulevan sunnuntain konsertissa lavalle Jenniferin lisäksi nousee myös apulaisjohtajamme Bláthnaid.

Bláthnaid on irlantilainen kuoronjohtaja, laulaja ja pianisti, joka asuu Helsingissä. Hän on valmistumassa Sibelius-Akatemiasta kuoronjohdon maisteriksi. Bláthnaid on toiminut Maailma-kuoron säestäjänä ja apulaisjohtajana vuodesta 2024 lähtien ja on saanut kunnian johtaa kuoroa konserteissa Helsingissä ja Kaustisen kansanmusiikkijuhlilla. Hän on otettu voidessaan olla osa tätä upeaa yhteisöä ja saadessaan tehdä musiikkia Jenniferin ja Maailma-kuoron kanssa!

Bláthnaid johtaa kappaleen nimeltä Songbird sunnuntain konsertissamme.

🎶 Kaleidoscope Heart -konsertti oli monella tapaa ainutlaatuinen. Esiinnymme ensimmäistä kertaa uuden johtajamme Jennifer Moirin kanssa, minkä lisäksi saimme tehdä yhteistyötä upeiden Sibelius Akatemian Project Sing! -kurssin opiskelijoiden kanssa ja tulkita heille merkityksellisiä kappaleita.

🎶 The Kaleidoscope Heart concert was unique in many ways. We performed for the first time with our new director Jennifer Moir, and we also got to collaborate with the amazing students of the Sibelius Academy’s Project Sing! course and interpret meaningful songs for them.

💛 A warm Thank You to everyone who participated in the concert and to our wonderful audience!

Our upcoming concert, Kaleidoscope Heart, we will sing a traditional song called Bilbil pile (Nightingale) from Kosovo (Metohija) with our student conductor Mia Reba.

Mia is an ethnomusicologist and singer from Croatia whose instruments of both research and performance practice are voice and community. Her artistic worlds collide on the borders of Balkan traditions and musical storytelling with a special interest in Bosnian sevdah and Bulgarian singing.

“The song is a gentle morning lullaby where a young girl speaks to a nightingale (Bilbil pile), asking the bird to be silent in the morning so she can wake her love up since she caressed him to sleep. She sings ""Rise up, rise up my love"", calling him so they could witness the dawn together.

Even though I am not a cultural bearer of this beautiful piece, coming from eastern Croatia I have been surrounded by similar vocal soundscapes throughout my childhood. In the quest for a new sense of belonging in Finland, here stands a subtle reminder of home which I dare to gift myself with. However, I have been intrigued by the lack of information on the origin of the song which keeps me awake to bring attention on how easily traditions lose the right of their roots while being weaved into heavy historical heritage. Seeing art as an enabler of empathy and sensitivity to our external and internal environments, I bring this song as a call for peace, an invitation to a place where we speak the same meanings with different tongues while cherishing the privilege to speak through music for those whose voices have been silenced.”

Our upcoming concert is being prepared in collaboration with Sibelius Academy's Project Sing! -course students, who will each conduct a piece they chose for the choir to perform.
