Bloom & Gloom is here again, this time for the 3rd and quite possibly for the last time!

In the 3rd of August, we will present performances from Lauren Sarah Hayes, a Scottish improviser and a sound artist, who has gained recognition for her embodied approach to computer music. Her music is a mix of experimental pop/live electronics/techno/noise/free improvisation and has been described as ‘voracious’ and ‘exhilarating’.

Additionally 2 duos will perform, both of them playing together for the very first time.

Lauri Hyvärinen & Sulo Kolehmainen have been aware of each other for a number of years, and despite the occasional aesthetic overlap, they have never played together. Whether the encounter will be an austere but an awkward train wreck, an assault of tiny needle pricks to the eardrums or a pile of flaming garbage inside a zen monastery, remains to be seen. Mostly likely the result will include all of the above.

As the second duo of the evening we will experience an intriguing encounter of the wind player Matti Luokkanen and the vocalist/flutist Heliä Mailis Viirakivi. The prior has a strong background playing free jazz with various people for more than a decade, including in the band Fogelbörs. The latter is well versed in classical but folk influenced extended vocal and instrumental techniques, and has performed in various interdisciplinary and contemporary productions all over Europe. What brings the duo together is a strong backbone in improvisation and their love for playful spontaneity.

Welcome to the second edition of Bloom & Gloom, an Äänen Lumo organised event that brings interesting sonic acts with various approaches to your ears from near and far. Once again; come bask in the gloom and smell the flowers!

Bloom & Gloom on Äänen lumon järjestämä tapahtuma joka tuo kuultavaksi mielenkiintoisia äänen parissa toimivia tekijöitä läheltä ja kaukaa.

Tällä kertaa esiintymässä on Los Angelesilainen tietokonemusiikin taituri, myös hypnotisoijana työskenellyt Ellen Phan, joka saapuu ensimmäiselle Suomen keikalleen.

Esiintymässä myös suomalaisen äänitaiteen uranuurtaja Petri Kuljuntausta, Turussa tällä hetkellä asuva Ruby Louise Rose jonka tiukat mikroskooppisen tarkat generatiiviset biitti-ilottelut eivät jätä ketään kylmäksi, sekä Antoine Verhaverbeken ja Sulo Kolehmaisen muodostama duo, joka tutkii yksitoikkoisuuden stimuloivia ominaisuuksia.

Ellen Phan is an artist working primarily in the field of computer music. Therapy-specific methodologies are employed as source material, modulated autonomously by para-sympathetic activity through a variety of processing and synthesis, with an aim to gather insight into cognitive and emotional states on a subconscious level.

Ruby Louise Rose
Ruby Louise Rose’s performance will probably involve setting some processes in motion and poking them every now and then. Visually, it might look like she is checking her email.

Antoine Verhaverbeke & Sulo Kolehmainen
A first time duo performance from 2 people with deep interest in finding the stimulating in the boring. AV: Sustainer guitar, SK: Clarinet & electronics.

Petri Kuljuntausta
A forerunner of the generation of Finnish electronica artists that emerged in the 1990s, Petri Kuljuntausta manoeuvres smoothly around the relatively peripheral sphere that makes up Finland’s experimental electronic music scene, always maintaining a broad international outlook be that as an artist, or as a keen observer.

How to get to Toinen Kerros? Missä Toinen Kerros on?

Toinen Kerros is located in the Vallila industrial area, the address is Nokiantie 2-4, Helsinki. Toinen Kerros is inside Kisällitalo, in the same building with Playhouse, so enter through the door you see in the photo here. Then follow the signs that say Toinen Kerros / Äänen Lumo. Welcome!

(Once you enter Kisällitalo, walk to the end of the corridor and open the brown door. Walk up the stairs and turn left. Then continue to the end of the corridor and you are there.)
