I got to know a great woman named Lesley over a weekend's virtual hackathon. One day after telling her about my job search story, Lesley sent me a list of people she knows that work in my field, and perhaps might have some open positions to offer. I went ahead and sent them my CV - and as intrusive as it might seem - I asked them if they would consider hiring me.. Next day, I got a phone call from
one of those respective people. We had a long talk on the phone about values, problems, solutions and how to connect the dots. One week later, I got a job offer and now currently on my work trial. Anxiously sending out tons of applications with no respond, not even a phone call nor interview. I got to work at coffee shop & restaurant, hands to mouth, alongside with some 18 year-old Finnish being my Shift Supervisor. Sometimes I felt like giving up and doubt myself: What is wrong with me? I see so many similar stories around me: someone with a Master degree but doing a cleaning job, and many of my friends after finish their study here ended up going back to other countries, there is also rumors that they would not even look at your CV if your name sounds Non-Finnish...etc
But, lady and gentlement, after meeting Lesley and got myself a job after only one week - I want to multiply this energy. I want to find many other Lesleys - supporting others in finding their jobs. I want to find many other similar positive cases like me - so that if you are reading and feeling down because of rejection - Don't! Do not give up, we and many others have made it and so can you. There are, indeed, many ugly truths here in Finland when it comes to finding Jobs as a foreign background. But there are also successful stories of people who have made it too. And this is the place to share those stories! I hope we can somehow spread the positivity towards others. It does not give you a job immediately, but it is for sure a sustainable impact, and opportunities will come with it!
