The United States, Israel, and Argentina are the only nations that voted against a United Nations resolution recognizing the slave trade as "the gravest crime against humanity."

The resolution, spearheaded by Ghana, received 123 votes in favour, with 52 abstentions and three against.

The US, one of the greatest beneficiaries of the transatlantic trade that saw between 10 to 12 million Africans forcibly transported across the Atlantic, stood among the minority opposing the text.

Historians note that the largest number of enslaved Africans were taken to North America, where they laboured on plantations and in construction projects that helped build modern-day America.

The dispute over the abolition of the slave trade was, in fact, a primary factor that plunged the United States into a deadly civil war from 1861 to 1865.

The current resolution is being hailed as a breakthrough at the UN in acknowledging the inhumane cruelty inflicted upon Africans. It also calls for reconciliation and reparations from countries that orchestrated the slave trade.

"This resolution is a pathway to healing and reparative justice. This resolution is a safeguard against forgetting," said Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama.

Most European countries that masterminded slave trade, including Britain, Spain, France and the Netherlands, abstained from the UN vote. Russia and China voted in favor.
