Conclusion of REFUFIN Project

We are announcing that the REFUFIN project will conclude its activities on 11 February 2026.

After exploring all available options, we've found that recent STEA funding reductions and our efforts to secure alternative government support have not provided the financial foundation needed to continue providing services at the quality level our participants deserve. Following thoughtful deliberation, the Board of House of Helsinki ry has made the difficult decision to bring the REFUFIN project to a close, as we are committed to operating responsibly and sustainably.

REFUFIN was launched in response to the war in Ukraine and has since provided guidance, counselling and integration support to people who fled the conflict and now live in Finland. Over its four-year course, the project trained hundreds of volunteers, delivered thousands of online consultations and supported thousands in person, helping strengthen community connection and two-way integration in Finnish society.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who made this work possible, especially our volunteer team and project staff.

REFUFIN-hankkeen toiminnan päättyminen

Ilmoitamme, että REFUFIN-hanke päättyy 11.2.2026

Kaikkien käytettävissä olleiden vaihtoehtojen huolellisen tarkastelun jälkeen olemme todenneet, että viimeaikaiset STEA-avustusten leikkaukset sekä pyrkimyksemme löytää vaihtoehtoista julkista rahoitusta eivät ole luoneet riittävää taloudellista perustaa toiminnan jatkamiselle sillä laatutasolla, jonka hankkeen osallistujat ansaitsevat. Perusteellisen harkinnan jälkeen House of Helsinki ry:n hallitus on tehnyt vaikean päätöksen REFUFIN-hankkeen päättämisestä. Päätös pohjautuu sitoutumiseemme toimia vastuullisesti ja taloudellisesti kestävällä tavalla.

REFUFIN käynnistettiin vastauksena Ukrainan sotaan, ja hankkeen aikana se tarjosi neuvontaa, ohjausta ja kotoutumisen tukea Suomessa asuville sodan vuoksi paenneille. Neljän toimintavuoden aikana hanke koulutti satoja vapaaehtoisia, toteutti tuhansia verkkoneuvontoja ja tuki tuhansia ihmisiä kasvokkain, vahvistaen yhteisöllisyyttä ja kaksisuuntaista kotoutumista. Kiitämme sydämellisesti kaikkia, jotka olivat mukana tekemässä tätä työtä mahdolliseksi, erityisesti vapaaehtoisia ja hankkeen työntekijöitä.

Kaupunki Kaverit, onboarding into Lutheran Christmas traditions in Finland

On 21 December, we held the last Kaupunki Kaverit meeting of 2025.

A friendly reminder, in 2025 House of Helsinki launched a new initiative called Kaupunki Kaverit, promoting two-way integration. In this format, volunteers prepare and lead thematic city walks from their own perspective, sharing culture, history, and everyday meanings of the city.

This time, our volunteer Maria Kaunianen prepared an onboarding into Lutheran Christmas traditions in Finland. Through a walk in the center of Helsinki, she shared historical and cultural context, and we ended the evening at the Christmas market with warm, non-alcoholic glöggi.

For many of us, especially volunteers with a migrant background, this was a meaningful and welcoming introduction to Finnish Lutheran Christmas traditions.

Thank you, Maria, for the wonderful organisation, and thank you to everyone who joined and made this evening special. Looking forward to continuing Kaupunki Kaverit in 2026.

Kaupunki Kaverit, perehdytys suomalaisiin luterilaisiin joulun perinteisiin

21 joulukuuta järjestimme Kaupunki Kaverit -toiminnan vuoden 2025 viimeisen tapaamisen.

House of Helsinki käynnisti Kaupunki Kaverit -aloitteen vuonna 2025 edistämään kaksisuuntaista kotoutumista. Toiminnan ytimessä ovat vapaaehtoisten itse suunnittelemat ja vetämät teemalliset kaupunkikävelyt, joissa kaupunkia, sen historiaa, kulttuuria ja arjen merkityksiä tarkastellaan tekijöiden omasta näkökulmasta.

Tällä kertaa vapaaehtoisemme Maria Kaunianen perehdytti meidät suomalaisiin luterilaisiin joulun perinteisiin. Kävelyn aikana tutustuimme Helsingin keskustaan joulun historiallisesta ja kulttuurisesta näkökulmasta, ja ilta päättyi joulutorille lämpimän alkoholittoman glögin äärelle.

Monille meistä, erityisesti vapaaehtoisille, joilla on maahanmuuttajatausta, tämä oli lämmin ja merkityksellinen tapa tutustua suomalaisiin joulun perinteisiin ja luterilaiseen kulttuuriin.

Lämmin kiitos Marialle hienosta järjestelystä sekä kaikille osallistujille yhteisestä illasta.

Kaupunki Kaverit jatkuu vuonna 2026. Odotamme innolla uusia kohtaamisia.

Kun ennaltaehkäisevä työ ja matalan kynnyksen tuki katoavat, ongelmat siirtyvät raskaampiin ja kalliimpiin palveluihin. Hallitus saattaa säästää taulukossa miljoonia, m***a todellisuudessa se menettää tulevaisuudessa miljardeja.

Järjestöjen arvo huomataan aina vasta silloin, kun se on jo kadonnut. Siksi tarvitaan politiikkaa, joka katsoo pidemmälle kuin seuraavaan budjettiin. Järjestöt eivät ole menoerä – ne ovat hyvinvointivaltion selkäranka."

Throwback to the fintegrate.fi launch event in September! ✨

At the event, Artem Kuosti from Moniheli ry and House of Helsinki joined our panel discussion and shared interesting thoughts about the future of volunteering.

We wanted to hear more, so we asked Artem:

🎤 Where are we heading – what does the future of volunteering look like?

Here are five points from Artem:

1️⃣ Identity-based volunteering strengthens
Identity- and skills-based volunteering is growing. People want to express their expertise, culture and passions, and find communities where they feel they truly belong. For people with migrant backgrounds, this creates opportunities to build meaningful roles beyond work and family.

2️⃣ AI and data shape the ways of working
AI, combined with continuously updated data, helps us truly understand people and what they need. It means we can respond faster and make more impactful actions. At the same time, automation takes care of routine tasks, giving us more time for what matters most: building trust and genuine human connections.

3️⃣ Civic activity becomes hyperlocal
Engagement moves closer to everyday life. People focus on themes that feel personally meaningful. Neighborhoods, local environments and small everyday concerns rise to the forefront.

4️⃣ Informal networks grow stronger
The “fourth sector” keeps expanding. People come together in flexible ways, driven by their own motivations. Professionals shift from being planners to becoming listeners and enablers, supporting community-led action.

5️⃣ Hybrid participation becomes the norm
Digital spaces make it easier for everyone to join in, while face-to-face encounters build trust and a sense of belonging. The strongest models blend these two seamlessly.

Candidates for HOH Volunteer of the Year 2025

House of Helsinki has an annual tradition of recognising one volunteer as our Volunteer of the Year.

Nowadays, most of our volunteers are actively engaged in the REFUFIN project, supporting people from Ukraine. At the same time, volunteers continue contributing to many other House of Helsinki activities.

The voting process includes two rounds.

🔵 Round one – Volunteers anonymously nominate their peers and share why they believe their candidate deserves the recognition.
🔵 Round two – All members of House of Helsinki — including the Board, volunteers, support members and employees — vote for the shortlisted candidates.

Tänä päivänä suurin osa vapaaehtoisistamme toimii aktiivisesti REFUFIN-hankkeessa ja tukee Ukrainasta saapuneita ihmisiä, jotka rakentavat elämäänsä Suomessa. Samalla vapaaehtoiset osallistuvat edelleen moniin muihin House of Helsingin toimintoihin.

On 8–9 November 2025, our 9 volunteers from House of Helsinki took part in the EO STEM JAM festival in Helsinki! 🚀

The festival inspires preschool and primary school children to explore math and science through play and curiosity. Our volunteers supported children and families during the even on multiple languages.

Darya Gulik (Project Manager at REFUFIN) contributed to the event by coordinating and training around 90 volunteers.

Thank you EO STEM JAM for this inspiring collaboration and to all the families who joined the adventure!

8.–9. marraskuuta 2025 yhdeksän House of Helsingin vapaaehtoista osallistui EO STEM JAM -festivaaliin Helsingissä! 🚀

Festivaali innostaa esikoulu- ja ala-asteen lapsia tutkimaan matematiikkaa ja luonnontieteitä leikin ja uteliaisuuden kautta. Vapaaehtoisemme tukivat lapsia ja perheitä tapahtuman aikana eri kielillä.

Darya Gulik (REFUFINin projektipäällikkö) osallistui tapahtumaan koordinoimalla ja kouluttamalla noin 90 vapaaehtoista.

Kiitos EO STEM JAM tästä inspiroivasta yhteistyöstä ja kaikille seikkailuun osallistuneille perheille!

Since 2022, House of Helsinki’s project Refufin has supported people from Ukraine rebuilding their lives in Finland. Many families arrive with pets, and we find their stories deeply emotional.

People did not flee alone. They did their best to bring their dogs, cats, and other pets, no matter how hard the journey was.
Our volunteers do a lot to make settling here easier for both people and animals. Since 2022 we have supported over 200 families who arrived with pets. When we organised free buses, volunteers would book extra seats for families with big dogs. We couldn’t refuse.

Volunteers still help every day by advising on veterinary travel documents, supporting families during migration police visits (at least to wait outside with dog, while people apply for protection), and even driving newcomers with dogs from the ferry harbour to reception centres after exhausting trips from Ukraine.

Vain kahdessa kuukaudessa, syyskuusta lokakuun 2025 loppuun, Oleh ja Anel ovat auttaneet 92 ihmistä kasvokkain: he ovat ottaneet tulijoita vastaan, auttaneet rekisteröitymisessä ja tukeneet heidän ensimmäisiä askeliaan kohti kotoutumista.

Today we want to share the story of Oleh and Anel — a couple whose journey to Finland has turned into a story of resilience, kindness, and deep commitment to helping others. Since September 2025, they’ve been among our most active volunteers, supporting newcomers from Ukraine both online and in person.

Their contribution quickly became extraordinary. In just two months — from September to the end of October 2025 — Oleh and Anel provided offline support to 92 people, meeting newcomers, helping with registration, and guiding them through the first steps of integration.
