Grant researchers: do you understand your MELA insurance?

If you work on a grant in Finland, you probably have to take out MYEL insurance with MELA. It covers your pension and accident insurance, and it affects your Kela benefits. But the system can be confusing, especially for internationals.

So we’ve invited MELA to explain it and we're inviting you to join us.

What are the benefits of MELA? How do you apply? What does it mean for international researchers, and what happens if you leave Finland?

Ari Jouhki, Team Leader at MELA, will give a short presentation, followed by plenty of time for your questions and discussion. You can also send us questions in advance when you sign up.

This event is part of our Academic Self Defence series, run by HYT’s International Affairs Working Group.

Welcome to HYT Event 👋

You are invited to HYT’s Welcome to the Union event on Thursday 29th October 2026 16.30-18.00.

The event is for new members to find out more about what we do as a union and for staff who are considering joining us but would like to learn a bit more.

You will meet our staff, board members and other new members like you, and we’ll be sharing all the key information about our union and how you can get involved.

The evening is led by our existing members who are on the Board and Shop Stewards. They will share a short presentation before time for questions, discussion and networking.

We would encourage everyone to attend in person, but the first part of the meeting (Presentation and Q&A) will be online for people to join remotely.

We will be serving pizza and refreshments and for those of you in person, you will get a welcome pack from us. 🍕
