☀️ Do you work in hot weather?

The Finnish Institute of Occupational Health recommends 20-minute breaks on hot days. If the strenuous work continues after the break, breaks need to be longer.

🌞 The term hot work means working in a space where the ambient air temperature exceeds +28°C. Work in a hot environment is detrimental for the worker’s health and for safe working.

Trade Union JHL reminds that hot conditions are a major occupational safety issue. Preparing for hot weather needs to be discussed in advance.

What should you do if an emergency warning instructs people to stay indoors? Stay indoors. 🛑🏠

But should your employer still pay you if you are absent from work because of the emergency warning?

Your trade union JHL's position on this is clear: Yes they should. Read the instructions that explain what you should do if you lost some of your pay because of the drone threat.💸

Trade Union JHL emphasises that employees have to get their pay if they cannot go to work because an emergency warning forbids going to the workplace.

🧑‍🍳 Today we thank catering sector professionals.

We celebrate today for the second time Thank a Catering Sector Professional Day. The day is organised by Trade Union JHL. The purpose of the day is to draw attention to catering sector professionals’ work and thank them for smooth running of everyday operations, their skilled work, and their important contribution to society.

👩‍🍳 Catering sector professionals hope for concrete improvements in their daily work. Work clothes and work shoes are essential for occupational safety, hygiene and well-being at work. It is not reasonable that low-paid employees have to buy these at their own cost.

For many young people, the school lunch is the only hot meal in the day. However, more and more adolescents don’t eat it at all. That is why it’s important to listen to the young people, develop the services and highlight the significance of school meals for well-being.

👎 A proposed new in-house law raises concerns in food services. The change in legislation would limit municipalities’ ability to organise food services flexibly and cost-efficiently. Especially small municipalities could end up in difficulties.

🧡 Thanking can be a word, a smile, or a shared coffee break. Appreciation can also be expressed through actions in everyday work: listening to what the employees have to say and providing good working conditions.

Have you already thanked the catering sector professional of your neighbourhood cafe or lunch restaurant?

Employees must get their pay when the authorities tell them to stay at home in the event of a drone threat.

Legislation needs to be changed urgently in Finland so that employees can feel financially secure in exceptional situations. JHL will start negotiations with employer associations as soon as possible about how the obligation to pay salaries and wages in exceptional situations should be determined.

🧡 Care assistants are the backbone of care services. They ensure well functioning services by enabling other care sector professionals to focus on their strongest areas.

Few people realise how versatile skills their work requires.

🧡 90% of care assistants work in the public sector with older people. Care assistants provide support in day-to-day life of older people, people with disabilities and others who need assistance. Care assistants make sure that clients have clean clothes on and that they have eaten on time.

A care assistant does not have a clear job description like that of a nurse or an institutional cleaner. In practice, care assistants do all kinds of care work except for medical care. Many start care sector work as care assistants and continue to study further.

⭐ Today, 22 May, is care assistants’ theme day. This theme day was started by JHL in 2025 because we want to highlight the significance of care assistants’ work.

JHL is the trade union for care assistants! We support our members through the turns of their working life and develop the world of work for the better. When you are a member of JHL, you are not alone – you are part of a professional community.
