a multidisciplinary, working environment that is competent in different design and prototyping techniques
high-level skills for careers in academia or other demanding educational, development and expert roles in society
an engaging research environment with opportunities for multidisciplinary research collaboration

We expect

a suitable master’s degree in design, human–computer interaction or related disciplines
genuine research interest in conducting state-of-the-art research
proficiency in English
a collaborative, proactive, self-directed and responsible work ethic.

These positions are intended for applicants who are starting their doctoral research. To be eligible, applicants must not currently hold a right to pursue a doctoral degree in any university in any country. Selected candidates are expected to apply for doctoral study rights during the University of Lapland’s application period in spring 2027 (2–16 February 2027).

EduCare calls.

EduCare is a research project which aims to establish a care-centered educational framework for design and other academic fields, promoting well-being, inclusion, and innovative teaching.

It seeks to identify gaps related to care in design education, develop care-focused pedagogical and training tools, test and refine training for care and creativity through pilot programs, and communicate, disseminate and expand care-centered educational methodologies.

Five work packages will be developed collaboratively between 2025 and 2027. Among several outcomes, a pedagogical framework will be created to synthesize the research findings, along with various training resources that will be made available to educators, communities connected to design and care, and other interested sectors.

Higher education, and design education in particular, is facing a critical care crisis. With rising levels of stress, anxiety, and burnout affecting both university lecturers as well as students, the quality of learning, inclusion, and creative expression is under pressure.

The European Union Erasmus+ EduCare project was launched to address this exact urgency with the intention of establishing a care-centered educational framework. By placing well-being and nurturing creativity at the very heart of higher design education, the project is developing care-focused pedagogical tools, training resources, and methodologies to transform how we teach and learn.

If you are a design educator, we want to learn from your unique insights, challenges, and practices. What has gone well or not gone well. Please take a few minutes to share your experiences with us via our online form.
