💙 MEET OUR OPENING SPEAKER | PRESIDENT TARJA HALONEN

We are deeply honoured to announce that Tarja Halonen, former President of the Republic of Finland (2000–2012), will open our Youth & Decision-Makers Seminar!

🇫🇮 As Finland's first female president, Tarja Halonen has dedicated decades of her public career to advancing human rights, democracy, gender equality and social justice.

Before her presidency, she served as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Justice and Minister of Social Affairs and Health. Internationally, she has held important leadership roles within the United Nations and has remained actively engaged in civil society and sustainable development.

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming representatives of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture (DG EAC) to Mirsal ry!

The visit was part of the Commission’s review of the Finnish National Agency, providing an opportunity to hear directly from organisations implementing Erasmus+ and European Solidarity Corps projects.

During the visit, we shared our experiences, highlighted the impact of our projects on young people and communities, and exchanged views on how EU youth programmes can be further developed.

💙 A special thank you to the Finnish National Agency for Erasmus+ and the European Solidarity Corps for proposing Mirsal as one of the organisations to visit and making this valuable exchange possible!

How can we ensure that people with migrant backgrounds have a stronger voice in shaping the society they live in?

Meet Melis Arı-Gürhanlı, an advocacy and civil society expert with over 15 years of experience in Finland’s NGO sector. Her work has focused on migrant political participation, leadership and social justice, with a commitment to strengthening migrants’ representation and influence in society.

She currently works at MIELI Mental Health Finland.

Meet Inka Hopsu, Member of the Finnish Parliament, Espoo City Councillor and education professional. With a background as a teacher, her work has a strong focus on education, children and young people, equality and sustainable development, as well as strengthening young people’s opportunities to participate and have their voices heard in decision-making.
