Founded in Finland in 2000, the International Nordic Walking Federation (INWA) is the official global governing body for Nordic walking, responsible for promoting, developing, and safeguarding the sport worldwide.

Our goal is simple. We want every competitor to enjoy a fair race and cross the finish line without receiving a yellow or red card.

For some competitors, the INWA race rules take a little getting used to. That is completely normal, especially if you have competed under different rules before.

The INWA Competition Rules explain the standards expected during a race, including technique, fair play and the reasons warnings or cards can be issued. Reading them before race day will help you feel prepared, confident and ready to focus on your performance.

We are here to support competitors, not catch people out.

From journalist to Nordic Walker.

After exploring Nordic Walking for The Independent, Harry Bullmore is now taking the next step and learning the technique for himself.

Harry recently spoke with INWA-certified Nordic Walking Instructor Katie Atkins and Neil Yoxall from Silva about the health and fitness benefits of Nordic Walking, and why it can be such an effective form of exercise for people of all ages.

Next week, he will be putting that into practice and giving Nordic Walking a go himself, with a video hopefully to follow.

We are looking forward to seeing how he gets on.

Behind every INWA World Championships is a dedicated team working for months to bring an international Nordic Walking competition to life.

Meet some of the people behind the INWA World Championships 2026 in Lahti, Finland.

Markku Levanen, Event Manager for Finlandia-hiihto and the INWA World Championships, plays a central role in the organisation and delivery of the event, bringing together everything needed to make the Championships happen.

Aki Karihtala, INWA President, leads marketing and sponsorship for the Championships, helping promote the event internationally and build the partnerships that support it.

Naohiro Takahashi, INWA Head of Competition and International Trainer, oversees the competition, helping ensure the racing is delivered professionally and in accordance with INWA standards.

And, of course, they don’t do it alone.

Alongside them is a fantastic team of volunteers who give their time and energy to make the Championships possible. From preparations behind the scenes to supporting competitors throughout the World Championships, they are an essential part of the team.

With less than a month to go, we want to recognise the people working behind the scenes and say a huge thank you to Markku, Aki, Naohiro and every volunteer helping to bring the INWA World Championships 2026 to Lahti.

A little behind the scenes with our INWA President, Aki Karihtala.

Before the World Championships really get underway, Aki has been taking a little time out at Alladale Wilderness Reserve in Scotland.

And how does the President of the International Nordic Walking Federation choose to spend his downtime?

Nordic Walking, of course.

A chance to get outside, enjoy the landscape, keep moving and enjoy a little Nordic Walking before all the excitement of the World Championships begins.

What makes Nordic Walking so much more than a walk?

The Independent has taken a closer look at why it can be such an effective form of lifelong fitness, from using more than 80% of the body’s muscles to supporting posture, balance, cardiovascular fitness and lower-impact movement.

It also looks at the part people often miss. Technique.

Used properly, Nordic Walking poles help turn walking into a coordinated whole-body movement. And because it is adaptable, it can work for children, athletes, older adults and people returning to exercise.

Katie Atkins also talks about the social side, the outdoor connection and the chance to switch off from technology while you walk.
