On this International Day of Peace, CIFA Ethiopia celebrates the women, men, youth, elders, community leaders and peacebuilders who work every day to strengthen understanding, cooperation and peaceful coexistence.

Peace is built from the ground up — in families, villages, communities and across borders.

CIFA Ethiopia, in partnership with BOMA.ngo, proudly celebrates the successful completion of the Lishe Bora Project across seven Kebeles in Moyale, Ethiopia, a significant milestone in advancing women’s economic empowerment, household resilience, nutrition, and sustainable livelihoods through the REAP (Rural Entrepreneur Access Program) Graduation Model.

👏 Today, we celebrate our participants — not simply for completing a project, but for the progress they have made toward greater resilience, confidence, and self-reliance.

Through the phased graduation approach, participating women and vulnerable households strengthened their livelihoods through:

💰 𝗦𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 & 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: Strengthening savings groups and financial literacy to improve household financial resilience.

💼 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 & 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Developing business skills, strengthening income-generating activities, and expanding livelihood opportunities.

🥬 𝗡𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Promoting kitchen gardens, cooking demonstrations, and agri-nutrition practices to strengthen household nutrition.

🤝 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 & 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁: Providing regular coaching through village mentors and community health promoters, including linkages to malnutrition referral services.

🌍 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀-𝗕𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴:
Strengthening collaboration and shared learning among pastoralist communities across Ethiopia and Kenya.

The 16-month phased REAP Graduation Model provided a structured pathway for participants to strengthen their livelihoods and move toward greater economic resilience and self-reliance, while keeping communities at the center of the process.

🌿 As Lishe Bora comes to a close, its achievements, lessons, and community-led experiences provide a foundation for continued efforts to advance women’s economic empowerment, nutrition, livelihood diversification, and pastoralist resilience in the Moyale cross-border area.

Over the past three years (2023–2026), CIFA Ethiopia and its partners have been working alongside pastoralist communities in Borena, Oromia, to strengthen resilience, restore dryland ecosystems, and protect livelihoods in the face of increasing climate shocks.

With support from AECID and Italian Cooperation (AICS), the consortium of Ayuda en Acción, CESVI, CIFA Ethiopia, and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) has implemented innovative, community-centered solutions with lasting impact.

🌱 Rangeland Rehabilitation: Community-led restoration of degraded rangelands through bush clearing, soil and water conservation, and improved natural resource management—helping communities restore productive grazing areas.

📡 Early Warning & Early Action: Strengthening community access to digital climate and drought information, enabling pastoralists to anticipate risks, prepare early, and take timely action before crises escalate.

🛡️ Index-Based Livestock Insurance: Introducing innovative climate-risk financing and livestock insurance solutions to help pastoralists protect their assets and recover from climate-induced livestock losses.

🤝 Stronger Together: These achievements demonstrate the power of partnerships, local leadership, innovation, and community ownership in building resilient pastoralist communities.

Anticipatory Action is a smart and proactive approach to humanitarian assistance—enabling us to act before a forecastable shock occurs, rather than waiting until disaster strikes.

🚀 When a pre-agreed forecast threshold is reached, pre-agreed and pre-financed humanitarian actions are triggered, allowing timely support that protects lives, livelihoods, and dignity.

🤝 Anticipatory Action complements humanitarian response while connecting closely with early warning systems, early action, climate adaptation, and disaster preparedness. It helps communities move from reacting to crises toward anticipating, preparing, and acting early.

From the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge to the Opera House, their grit, speed and determination showcased the enduring excellence of Ethiopian distance running on the world stage.
