WRAPS: Washable, Reusable, Affordable, Pads. Empowering Ethiopian school girls to embrace their femininity, learn proper hygiene, and stay in school.

We are empowering school girls to embrace their femininity and learn proper hygiene by providing them with reusable sanitary pads. Most village girls in Ethiopia do not have funds or even access to purchase disposable pads, so therefore, often miss up to one week of school a month during their menstrual cycle. We are committed to using Ethiopian products as much as possible. Also, we are providing

jobs for Ethiopian women as they learn to make our WRAPS. We have recently joined the NGO Children's Cross Connections (CCC). We will be working with the Wolayta Village project. Wolayta Village is a sustainable project providing jobs for Wolayta people. All profits from this venture will go to support two orphanages in Soddo, Ethiopia and transitional homes for orphans headed by widowed women. Powerful women, full bible studies and lots and lots of school - what a week its been!

I had the opportunity to share Wraps on International Women’s Day at Leka Preparatory School in Soddo. A highlight was introducing Konjit, one of our workers, who shared her powerful story of overcoming poverty, loss, and injustice to rebuild her life, finish school, and create a stable home for her children. It’s been just as encouraging to see our Wraps workers engaging deeply in Bible study together (we have so many participants that we had to split into small groups!) as well as celebrating our work in the Boditi school district!!

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY! What an incredible day of celebrating women all over the world. Here at our cafe that meant FREE COOKIES FOR ALL OF OUR FEMALE CUSTOMERS, because they deserve it!!

Another dream is coming true for Wraps. We are kicking off a new program next weekend in our cafe. Our cafe is slow on the weekends, so we thought why not increase business with a library. We love education and how books can change the trajectory of a child’s life. Stay tuned for more updates.

LET’S CELEBRATE 🎉 🎉🎉 Today we celebrated Konjit and Tawabech. These lovely women finished their 12th grade at the Soddo preparatory night school. We are so proud of them. Tawabech began with Wraps 12 years ago and Konjit 10 1/2 years ago. Tawabech started back in school at grade 6 and Konjit at grade 7. Wraps goal is to help Girls finish school! We don’t just want to help Girls in the rural areas, but also our own employees. So today we celebrated our own victories with two amazing employees!

Yesterday we said farewell to our beloved assistant manager, Kidist. If you have ever visited our café, and especially if you were a foreign Visiter, you’ll remember how outgoing and friendly Kidist is. She made an effort to make our foreign visitors, feel comfortable and also our many Ethiopian guest. We are happy for her that she has taken her dream job teaching English to first grade children. We wish her all the best.

Our Story

WRAPS: Washable, Reusable, Affordable, Pads. We are empowering school girls to embrace their femininity and learn proper hygiene by providing them with reusable sanitary pads. Most village girls in Ethiopia do not have funds or even access to purchase disposable pads, so therefore, often miss up to one week of school a month during their menstrual cycle.

Therefore, we go into the rural middle schools and use large posters to teach for one hour on the biology of menstruation, hygiene, r**e prevention, and STD’s. During this time we stress the importance of remaining in school and distribute one kit to each girl FREE of cost. We give these precious girls a tangible gift to help them stay in school and receive their education. Our goal is to reach 6,000 students in 40 schools (The Humbo District) in the Wolaitta area of the Southern Nations in rural Ethiopia for the 2018-2019 school year.

Our kits include six colorful pads, one small waterproof purse and one panty. WRAPS employs eleven women to cut and sew our washable sanitary pads thereby empowering local women to provide for themselves and their children.
