Commemorating the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence (GBV)!

Today, Rise and Shine Women Empowerment Center marked the 16 Days of Activism against GBV with a powerful event in Mekelle's Hawelti Sub-City bringing together over 60 participants, including religious and community leaders.

This meaningful gathering was part of our project funded by the UN Trust Fund and sub-granted by NEWA-Ethiopia. The event culminated in a solemn vigil to remember and honor victims of GBV, reminding us of the urgent need for collective action and justice.

Together, we stand against violence and for a future where every woman and girl can live with dignity, safety, and respect.

Heartfelt thanks to all participants, partners, and supporters who joined us in this critical movement.

Key facts about Online GBV

- Women are disproportionately targeted online, often with long-lasting impacts on mental health, safety, and opportunities.

- GBV online can spill into offline life, including real-world harm and violence.

- It thrives when bystanders stay silent; speaking out, reporting abuse, and supporting survivors makes a difference.

What you can do:

- Protect yourself: use strong passwords, two-factor authentication, privacy settings, and think before sharing personal information.

- Document abuse: save screenshots and URLs, note dates and times.

- Report: use platform reporting tools, and contact local authorities if you’re in immediate danger.

- Support survivors: listen without judgment, validate their experiences, and share resources.

- Promote safe spaces: foster respectful online conversations, zero tolerance for harassment, and digital safety education.

Stay informed, stay safe, and stand with survivors.

Project Update: “Her voice, her peace" second training success

As part of our ongoing commitment under the “FemPeaceEA” project, Rise and Shine Women Empowerment Center successfully conducted two-day training on peace-building, conflict prevention, and conflict transformation for 30 young women peace advocates on November 06-07, 2025 at the Caramel hotel, Mekelle.

Rooted in African feminist leadership and movement-building, the training empowered the young women to strategically influence local dialogue, reconciliation, and decision-making processes. Participants were able to develop tools to address conflicts through gender-sensitive approaches.

This initiative fosters a grassroots network of trained women leaders who will advocate for gender-inclusive peace-building in their communities, lead local dialogues and reconciliation efforts and amplify the voices of women in decision-making spaces.
