Empowering Mothers, Nourishing Children: Reer Approach.

Community-based nutrition and health activities are being implemented in underserved rural areas to improve maternal and child nutrition outcomes.
With support from UNICEF, MCDO strengthens women caregivers’ capacity through integrated nutrition education, infant and young child feeding (IYCF) counseling, and practical cooking demonstrations.
Mothers regularly gather at community facilities to receive hands-on training using locally available foods, including vegetables, fruits, eggs, and staple crops, promoting affordable and nutritious diets.
The intervention promotes household-level food diversity and resilience by emphasizing balanced meal preparation using community resources.
Home gardening initiatives, supported technically and financially by MCDO, enable mothers to produce nutritious foods directly at household level.
Today’s activity marks the harvest period, where mothers harvested fresh vegetables from their own home gardens established with MCDO support.
Fresh produce from home gardens is used in cooking demonstrations, reinforcing practical learning and sustainable nutrition practices.
The program targets pregnant and lactating women and young children, contributing to the reduction of malnutrition and improvement of dietary diversity.
These activities enhance community ownership, peer learning, and women’s empowerment, while also supporting local livelihoods.
The intervention aligns with donor priorities on maternal and child health, nutrition-sensitive programming, and sustainable community development.

Key Terms Related to Vaccination and MCDO Activities
1. Catch-up Vaccination
• The MCDO actively engages in vaccinating individuals, particularly children, who have missed doses of eligible vaccines due to various barriers such as delays, stockouts, access issues, hesitancy, or service interruptions.
2. Catch-up Vaccination Policy
• As part of its national immunization strategy, MCDO emphasizes:
• The importance of vaccinating individuals who have missed doses.
• Guidelines for determining eligibility and age ranges for catch-up vaccinations.
• Accurate recording and reporting of late doses.
• Utilizing every health contact to check and update vaccination histories.
3. Catch-up Vaccination Schedule
• MCDO implements a catch-up vaccination schedule that specifies:
• Age cohorts eligible for catch-up.
• Minimum and maximum age limits based on national policies.
• Minimum permissible intervals between doses for each vaccine antigen, facilitating complete vaccination.
4. Timely Vaccination
• The organization ensures doses are administered within the recommended time frames, enhancing overall public health.
5. Missed Dose
• MCDO identifies children who have not received one or more vaccine doses according to the national schedule and conducts screenings for catch-up vaccination as necessary.
6. Delayed Dose
• Efforts are made to address doses not given at the recommended times, ensuring children receive their vaccinations promptly.
7. Invalid Dose
• MCDO provides guidance on the validity of vaccine doses, ensuring that children do not receive doses administered before the minimum recommended age or intervals, thus ensuring effective immune responses.
8. Minimum Interval
• The organization communicates the shortest permissible time between vaccine doses necessary for adequate immune response, reinforcing that shorter intervals will be deemed invalid.
9. Periodic Intensification of Routine Immunization (PIRI)
• MCDO conducts time-limited activities focused on administering routine vaccinations, including catch-up doses to under-immunized populations and raising awareness about the importance of vaccinations.
10. Supplementary Immunization Activities (SIAs)
• MCDO organizes vaccination campaigns aimed at quickly delivering vaccines to large populations to close immunity gaps.
11. Zero-dose Children
• The organization works to identify and vaccinate zero-dose children—those who have not received any routine vaccines—thereby preventing future outbreaks.
12. Under-immunized
• MCDO targets individuals who have not completed their vaccination courses, particularly those missing the third dose of the diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DPT3) vaccine, to ensure comprehensive immunization coverage.
Community Impact
MCDO's efforts in these domains directly enhance community health by:
• Increasing Immunization Rates: Through educational initiatives and catch-up vaccination campaigns, MCDO boosts immunization rates among children and mothers.
• Raising Awareness: By conducting outreach programs, MCDO educates the community on the importance of vaccinations, addressing hesitancy and misconceptions.
• Providing Access: MCDO facilitates access to vaccines in remote or underserved areas, ensuring that all community members benefit from immunization programs.
• Engaging Local Partnerships: Collaborations with local health providers and community leaders strengthen the vaccination network and improve health outcomes.

Through these activities, the Mother and Children Development Organization plays a pivotal role in promoting public health and enhancing immunization coverage within the community

Championing a Future Free from FGM

On November 25, 2025, we proudly brought to life our GIZ-supported initiative: “School and School Initiative to Prevent and End FGM.” Inspired by the powerful theme, “Let My Sister Live a Dignified Life and Thrive for Her Dream,” our community came together in Harooryse Woreda to take a unified stand against Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM).

The day was filled with purpose and passion:
🧹 We cleaned and renewed our school grounds, creating a dignified space where every girl can learn and dream freely.
🎨 Together, we painted a wall of commitment leaving handprints and pledges to protect our sisters from FGM.
🎭 Our Gender Club moved hearts with a powerful drama, telling a story of dreams, loss, and resilient hope.
🚶 We walked as one through the community, carrying banners of promise in a visible rally for change.

This wasn’t just an event it was the beginning of a lasting commitment. Every cleaned corner, every painted handprint, and every voice raised is a step toward a future where no girl’s dream is cut short.

A heartfelt thank you to GIZ for their partnership, and to every student, teacher, elder, and leader who stood with us as brothers and keepers of our sisters’ futures.
