Empowering Mothers, Nourishing Children: Reer Approach.
Community-based nutrition and health activities are being implemented in underserved rural areas to improve maternal and child nutrition outcomes.
With support from UNICEF, MCDO strengthens women caregivers’ capacity through integrated nutrition education, infant and young child feeding (IYCF) counseling, and practical cooking demonstrations.
Mothers regularly gather at community facilities to receive hands-on training using locally available foods, including vegetables, fruits, eggs, and staple crops, promoting affordable and nutritious diets.
The intervention promotes household-level food diversity and resilience by emphasizing balanced meal preparation using community resources.
Home gardening initiatives, supported technically and financially by MCDO, enable mothers to produce nutritious foods directly at household level.
Today’s activity marks the harvest period, where mothers harvested fresh vegetables from their own home gardens established with MCDO support.
Fresh produce from home gardens is used in cooking demonstrations, reinforcing practical learning and sustainable nutrition practices.
The program targets pregnant and lactating women and young children, contributing to the reduction of malnutrition and improvement of dietary diversity.
These activities enhance community ownership, peer learning, and women’s empowerment, while also supporting local livelihoods.
The intervention aligns with donor priorities on maternal and child health, nutrition-sensitive programming, and sustainable community development.
