✨ Grateful Hearts ✨
We are always so thankful when people choose to volunteer with us. They bring their knowledge, experience, skills — and above all, their time — to support the most vulnerable. Their love and dedication help shape lives in such meaningful ways. 💛

In the last month, we’re especially grateful for Hanneke and her daughter Ilse, who invested their time and talents into our sewing ladies with extra training, and who also gave sewing lessons to the girls in the family home. 🧵✨

And a huge thank‑you to Petra and Niels, who spent seven weeks with us. Petra poured her heart into supporting special needs education, while Niels shared his technical skills with our Handmade guys. 👩‍🏫🔧

May God bless each of them for all they have done. 🙏💛

Genfo – the “beschuit met muisjes” of Ethiopia 💛🍚✨

In Ethiopia, the arrival of a baby is celebrated with genfo: a nourishing, lovingly prepared grain porridge with a small well in the middle filled with warm, spiced oil. You can’t just pick it up at the supermarket — it’s a dish prepared with care weeks before the birth. Grains are selected, roasted, and milled; red peppers are dried in the sun and blended with fragrant spices to make berbere.

And when the baby finally arrives… mother, sister, or aunt prepares the genfo. A gesture of love, care, and recovery — and a delicious start for the new mother and her breastfeeding journey. 😊💕

But for our teenage mothers, this story often looks very different. Too often, no one is there to care for them. No genfo. No admit (the local oatmeal porridge). No warm hands cooking for them in their most vulnerable moment.

That’s why the very first thing we do when a young mother comes into our care is simple, but deeply meaningful:
✨ We make genfo. For her. With her.

Together with the other teenage mothers and our social workers.

And they enjoy it so much — not only the food, but the feeling of being seen, valued, and loved. 💝

Feeding genfo to the new mother is a beautiful tradition here — a powerful symbol of connection, tenderness, and community. And these are exactly the things our young mothers need most.

Love, care, and belonging. The most essential ingredients of all. ✨
