Lake Tana Biosphere Reserve

Launching Workshop for the Establishment of the Lake Tana Alliance was successfully held on 23 December 2025 at Unison Hotel, Bahir Dar, with the participation of representatives from government offices, academia, civil society organizations, religious institutions, the private sector, CBOs, and the local community.
The workshop introduced the objectives of the Lake Tana Alliance and promoted stakeholder collaboration for the sustainable management and protection of the Lake Tana ecosystem.

የጣና ሀይቅ ህብረት ምስረታ አውደ ጥናት ታህሳስ 14/2015 በባህር ዳር ዩኒሰን ሆቴል ከመንግስት መስሪያ ቤቶች፣ ከምርምር እና ትምህርት ተቋማት፣ ከሲቪክ ማህበራት፣ ከሃይማኖት ተቋማት፣ ከግሉ ሴክተር፣ ከማህበረሰብ አቀፍ ድርጅቶች እና ከአካባቢው ማህበረሰብ የተውጣጡ ተወካዮች በተገኙበት በተሳካ ሁኔታ ተካሂዷል።
አውደ ጥናቱ የጣና ሀይቅ ህብረትን አላማዎች በማስተዋወቅ የጣና ሀይቅን ስነ-ምህዳር በዘላቂነት ለመቆጣጠር እና ለመጠበቅ ባለድርሻ አካላት ትብብርን ለማጠናከር ጉልህ ድርሻ ነበረው፡፡

Congratulation to NABU and Gondar University
One of the pilot activities in previous projects of NABU was supporting the initiatives of regional product development in Lake Tana biosphere reserve. Among these regional products, black cumin oil production was selected to work with the local communities of East Dembia Woreda. This initiative was started by NABU in collaboration with Gondar University and local community. All infrastructures including the software and production workshop were done with financial support of NABU and technical support of Gondar University. The only activity behind the schedule was installation of electricity as a result of this, production of black cumin was late. However, Gondar University cover the transformer cost and closely follow up the installation of the transformer. Since 27th May 2023, the production of black cumin oil has started with the opening ceremony in presence of Gondar University President, NABU, local government and local community representatives.

The Ethiopian Biodiversity Institute drafted National Biosphere Reserve Policy and presented to members of the Standing Committee of the Agriculture (the People's Representatives Council , Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia) and to Prime Minister office, Adama Kerehu, Hotel on 3rd of April 2023

Stakeholder dialogue was conducted on Lake Tana protection and development by Lake Tana and other Water body Development and Protection Agency in collaboration with NABU, in Bahir Dar at Blue Nile resort Hotel, March 28, 2023. The Government officials at regional, zonal, and Woreda levels, civil society, NGOs, Community members, academia, and religious leaders, attended the dialogue. Discussion issues were presented by the professionals and other responsible bodies. And the participants of the dialogue were actively involved and agreed to play their roles in the protection and development of the Lake Tana watershed resources.
