Through our Enterprise Development Programme (EDP), we support sustainable development by strengthening milk producing cooperatives and local private businesses.

In Debre Berhan, at the heart of Ethiopia’s Milk Valley, our support to cooperatives like Andinet and enterprises such as Garden Dairy has helped turn milk into a reliable source of income. With restored cooling systems, improved skills and stable market links, milk no longer goes to waste and farmers no longer sell at a loss.

Today, 605 farmers supply milk through cooperatives, most of them women. With steady buyers and fair prices, families are more secure, and women are gaining independence and a stronger voice.

This is how we sustainably transform lives by connecting farmers, cooperatives and private actors across a stronger dairy value chain.

For years, Niger seed farmers in the Benishangul Gumuz region of worked hard but earned very little. They sold their harvest to middlemen who controlled prices and took most of the profit, leaving farmers with limited choices and almost no power.

That story began to change when farmers came together under the Assosa Multipurpose Farmers Cooperative Union, with support from . By owning an edible oil processing plant and processing Niger seed from its members, the Union now produces and sells healthy cooking oil locally at a fair price. What began as cooperation has grown into real ownership of their market.

Today, the Union brings together 67 primary cooperatives with more than 20,000 members. Women are at the centre of this progress, with 22 cooperatives fully owned and led by women. Members earn more, share profits, and access edible oil with a 5 percent discount, strengthening food security at home.

This is the power of farmers owning their future, not just their harvest.

In the heart of , AndE Mamma, a social enterprise supported by , is turning discarded paper into handcrafted beauty. This isn't just about recycling, as it is also about the incredible mothers behind the work.

By collecting paper from government offices and partner organizations like Oxfam, these mothers have created a circular economy that works. AndE Mamma receives funding and technical support through Oxfam’s Enterprise Development Programme (EDP) to empower thousands of women cleaners and local artisans. Together, they turn what was once "scraps" into dignified livelihoods and steady income.

With a new sales outlet open and a goal to recycle over 1,000 tonnes of paper next year, AndE Mamma is proving that social enterprises can scale and thrive.

When we support mothers, we support the future!!

This year’s theme, “Where Water Flows, Equality Grows,” reminds us of the important and often unequal role that women and girls play in water management and access. It also calls for action to address gender inequalities in water and sanitation services.

In the Pinyudo settlement, which is one of the seven refugee settlements where provides WASH services, women play a strong role in managing the water system. They serve on the WASH committee, manage drainage systems, fence water points, and take part in overall water management.

Through Oxfam’s Enterprise Development Programme, a local partner called Garden Dairy is helping the women-led Andenet Dairy Cooperative strengthen its business.

The cooperative and its member farmers are receiving support to grow their enterprise, improve product quality, and build stronger links with buyers.

The impact is easy to see at the cooperative’s milk receiving and processing site in Debre Birhan. The cooperative’s manager, Berehane Eshete, now oversees thousands of litres of milk and significant cash flow each month. At the centre of the site sits a milk chiller that protects quality and cuts losses, a rare asset for cooperatives in the area.

For years, that chiller sat idle. “It stopped working for almost seven years,” Berehane says. The breakdown limited the cooperative’s collection capacity and increased the risk of milk spoiling before it reached the market.

Once the chiller was restored with Oxfam’s support and the team received technical training, everything changed.

The cooperative expanded from collecting milk only in the morning to collecting milk both in the morning and the afternoon.

This shift improved handling, reduced waste, and helped farmers stay afloat during difficult seasons.

In Hitsats IDP site (Asgede Woreda), Tigray, 40-year-old Ms. Birey Yohans Werede used to spend most of her day just trying to secure water: a 40-minute walk per trip, long lines, and up to 8 hours a day travelling and queuing for water after being displaced by conflict.

Through Oxfam support funded by the Ethiopia Humanitarian Fund (EHF), the solar water system was restored and the pipeline extended, bringing a water point within about 20 metres of her shelter.

The change has been immediate: instead of losing most of the day to water collection, she can now meet daily needs more safely and with far less strain, alongside improved access to basic hygiene items and services.

She sums up the change simply: “I don’t waste my whole day walking and waiting anymore.”

The response also strengthened hygiene and sanitation: households including jerrycans, basins, torches, and soap; communal latrines; and bathing facilities were repaired, and hygiene promotion sessions supported safer day-to-day practices.

From 27-30 January 2026, Oxfam teams from Ethiopia and Somalia convened for the Ethiopia–Somalia Cross-Border Strategy Workshop to shape a joint strategy for communities living along a shared corridor where climate shocks, conflict dynamics, and fragility intersect.

This process brought together government and civil society partners, including the Ministry of Environment and Climate – Somalia, Candlelight Somalia, Mercy Corps, VSO Ethiopia, Vétérinaires Sans Frontières Germany, Strategy for Northern Development (SND), IGAD, and the 𝙀𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙤𝙥𝙞𝙖𝙣 𝙎𝙤𝙢𝙖𝙡𝙞 𝘿𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙡𝙤𝙥𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝘼𝙨𝙨𝙤𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 (ESDA), alongside Oxfam Somali, Oxfam Novib, and Oxfam in Africa.

In the opening, Oxfam in Ethiopia's Country Director, Yodit Zenebe Mekuria, captured the purpose powerfully: “𝙄𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙘𝙤𝙧𝙧𝙞𝙙𝙤𝙧, 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙘𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙛𝙖𝙧 𝙜𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙣 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙙𝙪𝙖𝙡 𝙛𝙧𝙖𝙜𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮.” She also urged a shift from managing crises to building a “𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝘾𝙤𝙧𝙧𝙞𝙙𝙤𝙧”, a strategy that is data-driven, economically grounded, harmonised, and conflict-sensitive, where progress on one side of the border reinforces stability on the other.

A strong message also emerged on inclusion: women must be central, not only as rights-holders, but also as key drivers of informal cross-border trade and community stability, with practical actions needed to reduce the labour and financial barriers they face.

Thank you to everyone who contributed their expertise and leadership across the four-day process.

Extreme wealth is no longer just growing. It is accelerating.

When money moves this quickly and into fewer hands, it does not stay neutral. It reshapes who gets access, who gets heard, and whose interests are protected first. Over time, political systems begin responding to wealth instead of the needs of everyday people.

That is the warning at the heart of Oxfam’s new analysis on inequality and our rights and freedoms.

What happens to power when extreme wealth keeps accelerating?

Oxfam’s new Davos report warns that as billionaire fortunes soar, influence concentrates too, shaping rules, politics, and public narratives in ways that can push countries toward oligarchy.

In 2025, there were more than 3,000 billionaires, with total billionaire wealth hitting $18.3 trillion, and fortunes grew three times faster than the previous five-year average.

Meanwhile, one in four people worldwide face moderate or severe food insecurity. A fairer economy is possible: tax extreme wealth, curb the political power of the super-rich, protect civic space, and invest in services people rely on.
