The Establishment of the Cross-Border Network of Pastoralist CBOs and Forum on the Peaceful and Sustainable Use of Shared Natural Resources was realized as a result of a forum that was conducted in Moyale, Ethiopia, from 22–24 September 2026.

Organized by AFD and PACIDA, in partnership with Welthungerhilfe, under the SRAPLEA III initiative, the forum brought together pastoralist communities, CBOs, government bodies, and other development actors from the Borana Zone of Ethiopia and Marsabet County of Kenya. It was aimed at strengthening cross-border collaboration, peaceful coexistence, and advance the sustainable use of shared natural resources. Moreover, the forum would help to empower pastoralists, amplify their voice, and advocate for their collective rights.

Together for resilient, peaceful, and sustainable pastoral communities.

Rebuilding Life: Hope and Clean Water Restored for IDPs in East Borana.

When inter-communal conflict displaced over 267,000 people along the Oromia-Somali border, families in Arero and Dhas woredas of East Borana Zone descended from self-sufficiency to fighting for basic survival in overcrowded IDP sites.

For 30-years-old Tume Sodhobicha Chachu, a mother of six living in the Urgo IDP site, the violence took away her family’s livestock, home, and security. "We went from a stable life to sleeping in the open, exposed to the cold and rain," she recalls.

A vital emergency intervention by Action For Development (AFD) and Welthungerhilfe (WHH) brought a turning point to their plight. Across the two districts, the emergency response reached 3334 displaced households (16,670 people) by delivering the following items:
• Shelter & Comfort: 3834 plastic sheet and 3334 shelter fixing ropes to protect families from harsh weather, alongside essential bedding kits such as 7168 blankets and 6668 mats.
• Household Essentials: 33,340 pieces of cooking pots, plates, cups, kettles, and ladles to help families restore daily routines.
• WASH & Hygiene: 867,600 water purification chemicals, 3334 buckets, 3334 washing basins, 50,010 body soap, 50,010 laundry soap and 6668 jerry cans to prevent waterborne illnesses.
• Clean Water Access: Rehabilitation of two local hand-dug pumps and solarization of bore hall to provide safe drinking water for both communities and livestock.

By prioritizing women, elders, and people with disabilities, the project ensured the most vulnerable people received dignified support. Today, families like Tume's have secure shelter and access to clean water—giving them the foundation they need to rebuild their lives.

“Thanks to the improved poultry support provided to us, we are now earning income by selling eggs, and have already saved significant amount of money. This has allowed us to avail our families nutritious food, and to cover the requirements of our children”.

Solar Power Brings Reliable Water to Displaced Communities in Arero, East Borana!
For years, the community of Fuldowa Kebele (Arero District, East Borena Zone) relied on an expensive, high-maintenance diesel generator just to pump water to their storage tank. The constant cost of fuel and frequent breakdowns put a heavy burden on already vulnerable households.

That changes now.

Through a project funded by United Nations OCHA /EHF and Welthungerhilfe, AFD has officially upgraded the water system from diesel to solar! The Upgrade at a Glance:
• 65 solar panel modules installed.
• Two 22-kW centrifugal pumps now running on clean, renewable energy.
• Zero fuel costs moving forward, ensuring long-term sustainability.

This vital upgrade ensures a reliable, continuous water supply to the Fuldowa reservoir, directly serving displaced community members in the district who need it most.

From Desperate Loggers to Hopeful Entrepreneurs.

Driven by poverty, Natnael & his fellow villagers once wielded axes, felling the trees in the Mago Park, and silencing its wildlife. They used to do this for survival. However, a transformative project initiated by AFD i.e bull-fattening facility with initial training, capital, and market linkage, provided them with a new livelihood opportunity. This turned the desperate loggers into hopeful entrepreneurs while preserving the local biodiversity.

Muda Kembele, a 36-year-old mother in Ethiopia's South Omo Zone, transformed her family's life through a clean water and agricultural project implemented by Action For Development and Sand Dams Worldwide.

Previously burdened by heavy chores and illnesses from contaminated water that disrupted her children's education, Muda mastered vegetable and poultry production, securing both nutrition and new income streams. Now a resilient village leader and role model, she volunteers to train fellow villagers in gardening, shifting her community from a struggle for survival to a future of improved productivity and female leadership.

AFD has commenced operationalizing its 2026-2030 Strategic Plan.

Action for Development (AFD) has adopted its Strategic Plan for the 2026–2030 period, marking a shift toward long-term community resilience and sustainable transformation. Building on three decades of service as a local NGO, the new roadmap prioritizes;

◉ Climate-resilient livelihoods,
◉ WASH & other basic services,
◉ Humanitarian response & preparedness, and
◉ Community voice & Civic responsive governance.

By focusing on the critical needs of pastoralist and agro-pastoralist communities, the strategy aims to move beyond traditional aid models, empowering local communities to navigate environmental and economic challenges through innovation and self-reliance.
