Sustainable Environment and Development Action - SEDA SEDA launched its first intervention in 1995 in specific Rift Valley areas where environmental degradation was the most critical problem.

Sustainable Environment and Development Action (SEDA), formerly known as Selam Environmental Development Association, is an Ethiopian Resident Charity, secular developmental non-governmental organization operating since 1995. Sustainable Environment and Development Action (SEDA), formerly known as Selam Environmental Development Association, was founded in 1992 as a non-profit, non-political, and

non-governmental organization devoted to ensuring sustainable environmental and human development in Ethiopia through a participatory and integrated development approach. Prior to that, SEDA was involved in building the awareness of influential community members about the severity of environmental degradation and SEDA's plan for rehabilitation. As a result, the community, having been initiated in the program, has contributed its land where SEDA carries out environment and household food security projects.

Female Food Heroes Award Program for Oromia Region Launched

Sustainable Environment and Development Action (SEDA) successfully launched the Oromia Region Female Food Heroes Award Program (FFHAP) on October 3, 2024, at the Elilly International Hotel in Addis Ababa. The event was attended by guests from Oromia Region Bureaus (Bureau of Agriculture, Women Federation, and Women and Children Affairs), faculty members of Addis Ababa University, staff of UN FAO, SEDA’s Board of Directors, and Directors of International NGOs.
For over 12 years, the FFHAP has been implemented through a strategic collaboration among SEDA, Oxfam GB, and the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA). During this time, the program has honored nearly 200 women for their contributions to food security, environmental sustainability, and agricultural development across Ethiopia. The program not only acknowledges these remarkable women but also aims to empower more women to participate in and lead the agricultural sector.
Opening Remarks and Program Overview was given by Ato Girma Dalu Roba, Executive Director of SEDA. Ato Girma highlighted the historic role the FFHAP has played in empowering women across Ethiopia, stressing how the program has improved female participants' skills, increased food production, and enhanced resilience to food insecurity. He emphasized the profound transformations these women have driven in their local communities and the broader agricultural landscape.
Following his speech, a comprehensive presentation on the FFHAP outlined the program’s goals, implementation strategies, and selection criteria. The presentation demonstrated the program’s enduring commitment to enhancing food security while empowering women, providing concrete examples of the FFHAP’s positive impact on communities and its contributions to sustainable development.
Furthermore, inspiring Testimonial and Strategic Discussions was made. A testimony was given by Farmer Alemitu Hundessa, a former Female Food Hero Alumni. Farmer Alemitu shared her transformative journey through the FFHAP in terms of her capacity built through training, enhanced voice for policy engagement platforms, success in her agriculture business, assets, living conditions and highlighted how the program impacted her life \.
SEDA acknowledged the generous funding support of Oxfam in Ethiopia sofar. And, opened discussion on expanding donor support to ensure the program’s sustainability. Participants discussed strategies to diversify the program's funding, emphasizing the importance of reaching out to new donors, showcasing success stories, and fostering corporate sponsorship under social accountability principles. These discussions underscored the collective need to establish a stable financial base for the program’s future growth.
In his closing remarks, Ato Dejene Hirpa, Deputy Bureau Head of the Oromia Agricultural Bureau, expressed how deeply moved he was by the women’s stories. He highlighted their experiences as critical evidence of the FFHAP’s impact and pledged the bureau’s continued support for the program in the Oromia region to empower women food producers, creating enabling environment for their endeavors in ensuring food security in Ethiopia.

የተፈጥሮ ሀብትን ከጥፋት ለመታደግ አጋር እና ባለድርሻ አካላት ያላሰለሰ ርብርብ እንዲያደርጉ ጥሪ ቀረበ፡፡

ቅዳሜ ሰኔ 22/2016 ዓ.ም አብጃታ ሻላ ሀይቆች ብሔራዊ ፓርክ፡ የተፈጥሮ ሀባበትን ህልውና ከጥፋት የመታደግ ሥራ ለአንድ አካል ብቻ ተትቶ ውጤታማ ሊሆን ስለማይችል አጋር እና ባለድርሻ አካላት ከመቼውም ጊዜ በላይ ርብርብ ሊያደርጉ እንደሚገባ አቶ ኩመራ ወቅጅራ የኢትየጵያ የዱር እንስሳት ጥበቃ ባለስልጣን ዋና ዳይሬክተር ገለፁ፡፡

የተፈጥሮ ሀብትን በመጠበቅ እና በመጠቀም ሂደት ውስጥ የሚፈጠሩ ግጭቶች ከጊዜ ወደ ጊዜ በእጅጉ እየተበራከቱ መምጣታቸውን እና በጊዜ መፍትሔ ካልተሰጣቸው በተለይ የዱር እንስሳት እና መሰል የተፈጥሮ ሀብቶችን ህልውና በማስቀጠል ሀገር ከዘርፉ የምታገኘውን ኢኮኖሚያዊ ጥቅም እውን ለማድረግ አዳገች እንደሚሆን የገለፁት ዋና ዳይሬክተሩ የተፈጥሮ ሀብቱን በመጠበቅ ሂደት ውስጥ የማህበረሰቡ ተሳትፎ እና ተጠቃሚነት እንዲጎለብት አጋር እና ባለድርሻ አካላት ከመቼውም ጊዜ በላይ ርብርብ ሊያደረጉ ይገባል ሲሉ Sustainable Environment Development Action/ SEDA የተሰኘ አገር በቀል ፕሮጀክት በአብጃታ ሻላ ሀይቆች ብሔራዊ ፓርክ እያከናወናቸው ያሉ ተግባራትን አስመልክቶ በተዘጋጀ የቫሊዴሽን ወርክ ሾፕ እና የተጠናቀቁ ፕሮጀክቶች ርክክብ መርሀግብር ላይ ተናግረዋል፡፡

በአብጃታ ሻላ ሀይቆች ብሔራዊ ፓርክ ላይ የሚደርሰውን ጫና ከመቀነስ እና በፓርኩ እና በአካባቢው ማህበረሰብ መካከል የተሳትፎ እና ተጠቃሚነት ስሜት እዲዳብር ከማድረግ አንፃር SEDA አበረታች ሥራዎችን እያከናወነ መሆኑን የተናገሩት አቶ ኩመራ በተለይ የአካባቢውን ወጣቶች የሥራ አጥነት ችግር መቅረፍ የሚያስችል እና በቱሪዝም ዘርፉ ለሚታዩ የመሰረተ ልማት ችግሮች መፍትሄ መሆን የሚያስችል የማህበረሰብ ሎጅ እና ለሠራተኞች የካፌ አገልግሎት የሚሰጥ ክበብ ገምብቶ ከማስረከብ ጀምሮ የብሔራዊ ፓርኩን የአሠራር አቅጣጫ የሚያመላክት እና አሁን ያለውን የአሠራር ሂደት ማሻሽል የሚያስችል የተጠቃለለ የአመራር እቅድ / General Management Plan እንዲዘጋጅ እንዲሁም ፓርኩ በዘመናዊ ዲጅታል ቴክኖሎጂ በመታገዝ በሰፊው የሚተዋወቅበትን ድህረ ገጽ/ web Site በማልማት ማስረከቡ እያከናወነ ያለውን የነቃ ተሳትፎ የሚያሳዩ ናቸው ሲሉ አብራርተዋል፡፡ ለዚህ ተሳትፏቸውም የፕሮጀክቱን አመራሮች እና ሠራተኞች በባለስልጣን መሥሪያ ቤቱ ሥም አመስግነዋል፡፡

የ Sustainable Environment Development Action /SEDA ፕሮጀክት በተለይ በስምጥ ሸለቆ አካባቢ ያሉ ሀይቆችን እና በዙሪያቸው ያለውን የተፈጠሮ ሀብት ከጉዳት ለመታደግ ዘርፈ ብዙ ማህበረሰብ አቀፍ ሥራዎችን እያከናወነ መሆኑን እና በአብጃታ ሻላ ሀይቆች ብሔራዊ ፓርክም እያከናወናቸው ያሉ ሥራዎች የዚሁ ቅንጅታዊ ተሳትፎ አንድ አካል መሆናቸውን የተናገሩት የፕሮጀክቱ ሥራ አስኪያጅ አቶ ግርማ ሮባ ናቸው፡፡

ፕሮጀክቱ በተለይ ማህበረሰቡ በብሔራዊ ፓርኩ ላይ በቀጥታም ሆነ በተዘዋዋሪ መንገድ የሚያደርሰው ጫና እንዲቀንስ እና በጥበቃ ሂደቱ ተሳታፊ በመሆን የሚጠቀምበትን አግባብ ለመፍጠር ያከናወናቸውን ተግባራት በዝርዝር ያነሱት አቶ ግርማ በሄደቱ የተገኙ ሥኬቶችን እና ተግዳሮቶችንም በመርሀግብሩ ላይ በሰፊው አብራርተዋል፡፡

በወርክ ሾፑ ላይ የተፈጥሮ ሐብትን በመጠበቅ በተፈጥሮ ሀብቱ ዙሪያ የሚስተዋሉ የጥቅም ግጭቶችን ማስወገድ የሚቻልበትን የመፍትሔ ሀሳቦች ያመላከተ ጥናት ቀርቦ ውይይት የተደረገበት ሲሆን በ SEDA ፕሮጀክት የተሰሩ ፕሮጀክቶች ጉብኝት እና ይፋዊ የርክክብ ሥነሥረዓትም ተፈጽሟል፡፡

Sustainable Environment and Development Action (SEDA) in collaboration with Oxfam and Ministry of Agriculture conducted the 11th Round Female Food Heroine award ceremony in Dire Dawa City today, May 24, 2024. A total of 9 Female Food Heroine Alumni from Dire Dawa city and Harari and Ethio Somali Regions received medallion, certificate and monetary awards for their effort in ensuring household food security and transforming their livelihoods from mere susstience to commercial and agri- business.

FDRE Ministry of Agriculture Gender Directorate Director W/ro Genet Mohammed handed over the award and addressed the winners and audience of the event. She remarked the unrecognized yet magnificent effort of women farmers in Ethiopian agrilculture and also promised to improve and strengethen the policy enabling environment and provision of hands-on support to in the extension, technology, market and credit system to boost production and productivity of smallholder women farmers and realize the growth and transformation of agrilcture for sustainable Development of the nation.
