🌍 | Conflict affects us all, but not equally.

In 2019, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, emphasized at the 8th Tana Forum that insecurity in Africa is highly gendered, disproportionately impacting women. He called for a renewed, inclusive focus on human security.

Today, this statement remains profoundly relevant. Women continue to shoulder the heaviest physical, economic, and social burdens of Africa's contemporary conflicts, while remaining largely excluded from the peace tables built to resolve them. It is time to bridge the gap between those who bear the cost of conflict and those who shape the peace.

: During his welcome address at the 7th Tana Forum in 2018, Ethiopian Prime Minister H.E. Dr. Abiy Ahmed Ali delivered a compelling argument on the true meaning of continental sovereignty. He boldly asserted that Africa cannot legitimately claim ownership of its peace and security initiatives while it struggles to cover a mere quarter of the African Union’s annual budget.

The Forum recommended establishing sustainable financing mechanisms to ensure continental sovereignty.

Regional integration, informality, and illicit economies are deeply intertwined aspects of Africa's economic landscape. While regional integration frameworks seek to promote legitimate trade, economic growth, and development, structural vulnerabilities, weak border governance, and widespread informality can create conditions that enable illicit economies to thrive.

Under its overarching theme, "Pathways to Peace in Africa: Economic Sovereignty and Geopolitical Transformation," the 12th edition of the Tana Forum will explore "Regional Integration, Informality, and Illicit Economies" as one of its key sub-themes.

The discussions will unpack the complex relationship between these interconnected dynamics and explore actionable strategies to address the threats they pose to regional stability, economic sovereignty, and sustainable peace across the continent.

This critical report will support the Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa by providing a comprehensive analysis of conflict trends and institutional interventions across the continent. The research will directly engage with this year’s compelling theme: “Pathways to Peace in Africa: Economic Sovereignty and Geopolitical Transformation.”
