Goats: Lifting Families Out of Poverty
The Afar region's pastoralist communities face harsh realities: conflict, drought, and limited resources. These challenges threaten their traditional way of life, especially livestock rearing.
Fatuma, a widow with eight children, and Behine, a father of seven, lost a significant portion of their livestock during recent conflicts. Both families were forced to take their children out of school to make ends meet.
But hope arrived! ✨ Welthungerhilfe Ethiopia (WHH), in collaboration with APDA and funded by BMZ, launched a goat distribution program. This initiative provided families with hardy goats well-suited to the region's environment, aiming to improve their economic stability and food security.
Fatuma and Behine's stories exemplify the program's success. With ten goats each, concentrated animal feed, and veterinary care, their herds thrived. They were able to sell male offspring for a steady income, allowing them to invest in food and most importantly, send their children back to school!
The goat milk, meat, and butter also enriched their diets, improving their overall health, especially for the younger children.
This program empowers families in Hida Kebele and breaks the cycle of poverty. By providing sustainable income and food security, families like Fatuma's and Behine's can build a brighter future for themselves and their children.
