We are just days away from Phase I of the AI for All Hackathon: Building Inclusive Solutions for Early Warning and Disaster Resilience, a Virtual Boot Camp organized by the African Youth Advisory Board on Disaster Risk Reduction (AYAB-DRR) – African Union, taking place on 14–15 August 2026.

Happening now: A Human Face to Disaster Reporting.

Journalists are essential to challenging and reshaping the incomplete narratives and reporting that fails to relay the human element of disasters, yet they frequently lack the specialized, environmental, and social frameworks necessary to unpack these multifaceted issues and raise awareness on disasters. It is precisely this gap that a two-part capacity-building initiative from AYAB-DRR in partnership with Zimbabwe Environmental Law Organisation (ZELO) and Zimbabwe Resilience Network).

The 2 day training seeks to equip journalists and young leaders with the knowledge, skills, and practical tools to report authoritatively and compellingly on disaster reporting.
We look forward to more media coverage on disasters and increased demand for prioritizing disaster management in Zimbabwe.

🚨 Earthquake Safety:

Two days ago, on August 3, 2026, Egypt was shaken by an earthquake (magnitude5.5) centered near Suez, with tremors felt across Cairo, the Nile Delta, and beyond. Thankfully, no major casualties have been reported, but moments like this are a powerful reminder of why disaster preparedness and inclusive early warning systems matter.

As part of the AI for All Hackathon — organized by the African Union, the Africa Youth Advisory Board on Disaster Risk Reduction, Stellenbosch University, and the Anna Lindh Foundation (co-funded by the EU) — we're working to build inclusive Early Warning systems and strengthen disaster resilience across communities.

Here's a quick refresher on Earthquake Safety 🌍:

1️⃣ Drop — to your hands and knees
2️⃣ Cover — take shelter under a sturdy table or desk
3️⃣ Hold On — until the shaking stops
4️⃣ Do Not Run — it can put you in greater danger
5️⃣ Inside — stay away from furniture, windows, and lamps
6️⃣ Outside — stay away from buildings, walls, and power poles
7️⃣ While Driving — stop safely, turn on hazard lights, stay inside
8️⃣ Wheelchair Users — lock brakes in a safe place, protect your head
9️⃣ Protect Your Head — with your arms or under seats/tables
