In 1967 a reporter asked Emperor Haile Selassie a question that must have felt strange even to him.

Followers thousands of miles away in Jamaica already believed he was the returned Christ.

The devout Ethiopian Orthodox emperor answered plainly, saying no one should assume a human being comes from a deity.

He meant it as a simple correction, not a rejection of the people who loved him.

Rastafari had built an entire faith around his coronation years earlier, reading prophecy into his very titles.

His denial changed nothing about what millions already believed in their hearts.

The religion kept growing, spreading through reggae music and migration far beyond Jamaica's shores.

Selassie remained, to the very people he tried to correct, exactly who they needed him to be.
