Every movement needs someone willing to start it.

In 1997, Zertihun Tefera Sekecho founded the Siiqqee Women's Development Association with a simple conviction: that women, given the right support, can build their own futures. Twenty-nine years later, SWDA stands as one of Ethiopia's voices for women's rights — and Zertihun is still at the helm, also serving on boards and advisory groups supporting UN Women Ethiopia and partner organizations across the country.

💧 Water is life — and for rural families in Ethiopia, it's also the key to food security.
In drought-prone communities, unpredictable rainfall can mean the difference between a full harvest and an empty plate. That's why Siiqqee Women's Development Association (SWDA) is helping vulnerable women, youth, and farming households take control of their water resources through small-scale irrigation.
With water harvesting systems, affordable pumps, and improved irrigation techniques, farmers are no longer at the mercy of the rainy season. They're growing vegetables and fruits year-round, diversifying their harvests, and earning extra income at local markets — all while improving nutrition at home.
For women especially, this means more than food on the table. It means a stronger voice in agricultural decisions and greater economic independence.

🌍 Building Resilience Among Forest-Dependent Communities in Southwest Ethiopia 🌱

Climate change is placing unprecedented pressure on forest-dependent communities in Ethiopia. Erratic rainfall, rising temperatures, and prolonged droughts are reducing water resources, limiting access to wild foods and Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs), and increasing the risk of forest fires. These disruptions weaken livelihoods and deepen food insecurity.

Women and children are often hardest hit, walking longer distances to collect water and fuelwood. Meanwhile, unreliable rainfall makes traditional farming more difficult, pushing some farmers to expand into forest areas — further degrading fragile ecosystems.

To respond, SWDA and EOC-DICAC have launched the project “Supporting Forest-Dependent Communities to Maintain and Protect Their Ecosystem and Adapt to Climate Change” in selected woredas of Buno Bedele and Jimma Zones.

Through agroforestry and small-scale irrigation, communities are:

🌳Promoting sustainable forest conservation

Recent demonstrations show how small-scale irrigation bridges seasonal food gaps, boosts household income, and expands access to nutrient-rich foods. These climate-smart practices are not only protecting forests but also empowering communities to thrive in the face of climate change.

By supporting sustainable livelihoods and ecosystem conservation, this initiative is helping forest-dependent communities adapt while safeguarding the forests they rely on. 🌳✨

🌸 A Milestone for Women and Girls — A New Chapter Begins
On 22 May 2026, the Siiqqee Women's Development Association (SWDA) officially inaugurated a brand-new Women and Girls' Safe Space (WGSS), a transformative step forward in our commitment to protecting the most vulnerable members of our community.
This achievement is part of our project “Scaling Up Gender-Based Violence Response in Emergencies (GBViE),” implemented with the vital support of UNICEF Ethiopia, aimed at strengthening frontline protection systems and localized emergency response in Wayu Tuka Woreda.
🏛️ What This Space Means
The WGSS is more than a building; it is a lifeline. Fully equipped with a confidential counselling room, a resting area, a functional kitchen, and a private washroom, this space was built with one purpose: to ensure that every woman and girl who walks through its doors feels safe, dignified, and supported.
🤝 A Commitment Signed, A Promise Made
The inauguration brought together government officials, community leaders, and key partners, all of whom signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to guarantee the long-term protection and proper use of this facility. This space will remain exclusively dedicated to providing life-saving services, rebuilding social networks, and empowering women and girls with new skills and opportunities.

The Program Team at SWAD is the backbone of the organization’s mission to promote social welfare and sustainable development. This team is responsible for designing, implementing, and monitoring projects that directly benefit communities. Their work ensures that SWAD’s vision translates into tangible impact on the ground.

👥 Team Composition
Program Manager (Mr. Gelalcha Negassa): Provides leadership and oversees all program activities.

Associate PM (Mr. Asfaw Kaba): Facilitate seamless coordination, ensure timely reporting, and foster effective community engagement.

M&E (Mr. Tarekegn Tamiru): Ensure data-driven decision-making and impact assessment.
GESI Officer (Mrs. Alemnesh Mamo): project design, community engagement, and monitoring to make sure interventions are inclusive, fair, and transformative.

Supporting forest-dependent communities to sustainably manage their ecosystems is a powerful pathway to both climate change mitigation and resilience building in Ethiopia. By promoting participatory forest management (PFM), communities are not only conserving forests but also rehabilitating degraded communal and farmlands through inclusive, locally driven approaches.

In Goro Jarso kebele of Buno Bedele zone, Oromia Regional State, forest-dependent households once relied heavily on logging, charcoal production, and firewood collection due to limited livelihood options. Since March 2024, the launch of the “Forest for Life” project, funded by DAA via Bread Austria, has led to a remarkable transformation. With 70% women and persons with disabilities (PwDs) actively involved, the community has organized itself and embraced diversified, sustainable income-generating activities.

Today, they are engaging in small-scale irrigation, beekeeping, and agroforestry practices such as banana intercropping, reducing pressure on forests while improving household incomes and food security.

This shift demonstrates that when communities are empowered with the right support and inclusive opportunities, they become stewards of both their environment and their future.
