Heavy floods are causing death and destruction in Kenya, as 76 people have lost their lives and 131,450 have been displaced ๐ŸŒโ›ˆ

It's the second time in six months that Kenya is experiencing heavy floods caused by heavy rains during the last two rainy seasons.

The rains have been enhanced by the weather phenomena El Niรฑo, and it comes after two years of drought, which has made it difficult for the soil to absorb the rain while the rivers also overflow.

Danish Red Cross has supported Kenya Red Cross Society with 1,5 million DKK for their flood response, and we also stood by the National Society during the floods last year.

Monday marked 1 year of conflict in Sudan. 25 million are in need of humanitarian aid and 8,5 million people have been displaced ๐ŸŒ

Partnering with ุฌู…ุนูŠุฉ ุงู„ู‡ู„ุงู„ ุงู„ุงุญู…ุฑ ุงู„ุณูˆุฏุงู†ูŠ Sudanese Red Crescent Society, British Red Cross, Danida, and European Union in Sudan ุงู„ุงุชุญุงุฏ ุงู„ุงูˆุฑุจูŠ ููŠ ุงู„ุณูˆุฏุงู†, we extend a lifeline to those in despair.

The work is carried out by Sudanese Red Crescent Society network of more than 4.000 volunteers. Together, they provide essential aid, first aid, protection, mental health & psychosocial support, and medical assistance to the displaced ๐Ÿ™Œ

Wajdan is one of the 4.000 devoted volunteers. For over 15 years, she has served as a volunteer nurse, dedicating her life to easing the suffering of others. Yet, the conflict has taken its toll.

"I have lived through the painful stories alongside the displaced families," says Wajdan.

We are thankful for the work of volunteers like Wajdan. And we are thankful for the support of our donors and partners ๐Ÿ™

When 31-year-old Amet was a child, he experienced how conflict affected his local community, and he was displaced. But during the conflict, he witnessed how the Red Cross assisted the wounded ๐Ÿ™Œ

After peace was restored, Amet returned to his village, Panthou, in Northern Bahr el Ghazal, South Sudan. And he joined a community disaster response team.

"Now we are being trained so that we can do the same as those I witnessed in my childhood. We are trained to help ourselves and each other if conflict arises, or we are hit by a disaster," he explains.

Amet also explains that they have responded to a local conflict a few hours away from their own village, where several were injured in a shooting. They were able to save lives with first aid โ›‘

With support from the Danish Red Cross, Rode Kruis, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and funding from EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid, the South Sudan Red Cross strengthens the resilience and capacity of local communities to prepare for and respond to disasters and conflict.

We are part of a significant partnership called Pilot Programmic Partnership between the Red Cross Movement and the European Union, who visited our project in South Sudan last month ๐ŸŒ

In South Sudan, we support South Sudan Red Cross in assisting local communities vulnerable to floods and other disasters in preventing, preparing and responding to disasters.

This includes training of community disaster response teams, improving access to clean drinking water, and distributing multipurpose cash to cover basic needs ๐Ÿ™Œ

The project is implemented in both Old Fangak and Aweil, the area we visited. Additionally, we distribute cash to thousands of people who have fled from Sudan after the war broke out last year. Over half a million have sought refuge in South Sudan.

We are working together with the South Sudan Red Cross, Rode Kruis, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid.

As the conflict in Sudan continues to displace millions of people and the number of wounded keeps soaring with limited aid available, the humanitarian crisis deepens ๐Ÿ˜ฐ

Sudanese Red Crescent Society staff and volunteers have been worked tirelessly since the onset of the conflict to serve the people in need through provision of first aid and other much needed services.

Services such as psychosocial support, medical care, provision of food items and NFI as well as facilitation of referral to legal aid, sexual and gender-based violence services, child protection and restoring family links ๐Ÿ™Œ

As time is critical, waiting for referral for medical care might not be an option. Thanks to the European Union (EU) funding and the support of the Danish Red Cross 'PROTECT'-project, the ุฌู…ุนูŠุฉ ุงู„ู‡ู„ุงู„ ุงู„ุงุญู…ุฑ ุงู„ุณูˆุฏุงู†ูŠ has been providing lifesaving skills on first aid and first aid kits to educational institutions in Riyadh as well as displaced people at the humanitarian service points.

The first aid courses are equipping the host communities and displaced populations with knowledge and skills that can be applied in their day-to-day life as they become the first responders in case of any incidents โ›‘

This promotes the wellbeing of the people, not only during conflict but also in times of peace. We are thankful for the support of European Union in Sudan ุงู„ุงุชุญุงุฏ ุงู„ุงูˆุฑุจูŠ ููŠ ุงู„ุณูˆุฏุงู†!
