This week at Cardiac Center Ethiopia — 10 patients, 10 procedures, all completely free of charge. 🫀🇪🇹

In the Cath-Lab:
Monday, Dr. Kefelegn Dejene treated an 18-year-old with rheumatic heart disease (very severe mitral stenosis, moderate MR, mild AR, and a possible clot in the heart) and a 40-year-old with rheumatic heart disease (severe mitral stenosis, moderate TR/TS).
Tuesday, Dr. Mohammed Bedru treated a 17-year-old with rheumatic heart disease (severe MS, mild MR) and a 40-year-old with rheumatic heart disease (severe MS, mild TR).

In the OR:
Tuesday, Dr. Shibikom Tamirat led two open-heart surgeries — a 3-year-old with a large inlet VSD and severe pulmonary hypertension, and a 1-year-old with a large PDA — with Dr. Miklol Mengistu and Dr. Zekaryas Belete assisting, Dr. Samson Adera on anesthesia, and Bezawit Bekele on the heart-lung machine.
Wednesday, Dr. Sisay Bekele and Dr. Fitsum Argaw led together on a 5-year-old (large secundum ASD, small PDA) and a 12-year-old (SAM with severe LVOT obstruction), with Dr. Miklol, Dr. Zekaryas, and Dr. Getu Debele on anesthesia.
Thursday, Dr. Fitsum Argaw led on a 5-year-old (complex VSD with subaortic and pulmonary artery involvement) and a 3-year-old (large PDA, SAM with severe LVOT obstruction, severe pulmonary hypertension), with Dr. Miklol, Dr. Zekaryas, and Dr. Samson Adera.

Every one of these 10 patients — from age 1 to 40 — is recovering well, now in the care of Dr. Meron Tesfaye and the ICU team. And through all of it, our OPD and Ward kept running at full force for every other patient who needed us this week.

Ten people. Ten free procedures. Zero birr asked of a single family. This is what it means to give a heart a second chance, no matter who you are. ❤️

Today, hope took center stage in our Operating Room.
Two brave children entrusted us with their hearts as they underwent life-changing cardiac surgery at the Children's Heart Fund of Ethiopia.
💙 A 6-year-old child with a complex congenital heart condition, including Transitional Atrioventricular Septal Defect (AVSD), severe left atrioventricular valve regurgitation, moderate right atrioventricular valve regurgitation, pulmonary stenosis, and epilepsy.
💙 An 8-month-old infant with a large Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA), Moderate Secundum Atrial Septal Defect (ASD), and pulmonary stenosis.
Every procedure represents more than a surgery—it is a chance for a healthier childhood, brighter tomorrows, and more precious moments with family.
Today's operations were led by Dr. Fitsum Argaw, with the support of Dr. Miklol Mengistu and Dr. Zekaryas Belete, while our Intensive Care Unit team, led by Dr. Meron Tesfaye, continues to provide the specialized care our young patients need during their recovery.
Please keep these courageous children and our dedicated medical teams in your thoughts as they begin their journey toward healing.
Together, we are giving children a second chance at life.

Before the first incision, before the first catheter — this is what getting ready looks like at Cardiac Center Ethiopia. 🫀🇪🇹

Today, Dr. Shibikom Tamirat leads the OR, with Dr. Miklol and Dr. Zekaryas Belete assisting, on two cases:
🔹 A 9-year-old with SAM, LVOT obstruction, and mild aortic regurgitation
🔹 A 4-year-old with a large PDA (L-R shunt)

In the Cath-Lab, Dr. Mohammed Bedru is preparing for two cases of rheumatic heart disease:
🔹 A 29-year-old with severe mitral stenosis, mild mitral regurgitation, severe tricuspid regurgitation, and mild aortic regurgitation
🔹 A 30-year-old with very severe mitral stenosis and mild mitral regurgitation

Two rooms. Four patients. This is the quiet moment before it all begins. 💪

Monday at Cardiac Center Ethiopia. 🫀🇪🇹

In the OR, Dr. Fekede Agwar leads today, assisted by Dr. Miklol and Dr. Zekaryas Belete, on two cases:
🔹 An 8-year-old with a large lower secundum ASD plus an additional small ostium secundum ASD — both holes causing blood to flow the wrong way between the heart's upper chambers
🔹 A 40-year-old, previously treated with coarctation stenting, now with a leaky mitral valve (with prolapse) and a bicuspid aortic valve causing moderate narrowing, plus mild tricuspid leakage

In the Cath-Lab, the team is managing two coronary cases — a 73-year-old with coronary artery disease and diabetes, and a 58-year-old with coronary artery disease and high blood pressure — one diagnostic, one requiring intervention.

Four patients, four different chapters of heart disease, one local team working through all of it today. 💪

Two operating rooms. Two Cath-Lab cases. One team, working in sync across Cardiac Center Ethiopia today.

In OR 1, Dr. Fitsum Argaw led, with Dr. Zekaryas Belete assisting, on a large secundum ASD with severe pulmonary hypertension.
In OR 2, Dr. Fekede Agwar led, with Dr. Miklol assisting, on a large PM VSD, partially restricted by the septal leaflet.

In the Cath-Lab, Dr. Kefelegn Dejene managed two cases of rheumatic heart disease — very severe mitral stenosis with mild mitral and tricuspid regurgitation.

And through it all, the ICU kept pace, holding steady for every patient coming out of surgery.

Four cases. Two rooms. One quiet, steady kind of teamwork that doesn't ask for applause — just keeps going. 🫀

Week recap at Cardiac Center Ethiopia. 🫀🇪🇹

This week, our local team completed:
🔹 6 open-heart and complex congenital cases in the OR
🔹 4 procedures in the Cath-Lab
= 10 procedures in 4 days

Led by Dr. Fekede Agwar, Dr. Shibikom Tamirat, Dr. Fitsum Argaw, Dr. Miklol Mengistu, Dr. Zekaryas Belete, Dr. Mohammed Bedru, and Dr. Kefelegn Dejene, with Dr. Meron Tesfaye and the ICU team holding down recovery around the clock.

Ten hearts given a second chance, all by hands trained right here in Ethiopia.

That's a week's work at Cardiac Center Ethiopia. 💪

Thursday at Cardiac Center Ethiopia — spotlight on the Cath-Lab. 🫀🇪🇹

Dr. Kefelegn Dejene (Adult Interventional Cardiologist) is leading two procedures today:
🔹 A patient with chronic coronary syndrome, alongside poorly controlled Type 2 diabetes and hypertension
🔹 A patient returning three years after a coronary stent, being checked for possible restenosis, also managing Type 2 diabetes

Two cases, two different chapters of heart disease — one lab, one team, working through it all.

This is the Cath-Lab in full motion. 💪

Wednesday at Cardiac Center Ethiopia — the OR and ICU are both running hard. 🫀🇪🇹

In the OR, Dr. Fitsum Argaw (Cardiac Surgeon) is leading two open-heart surgeries today, with Dr. Zekaryas Belete (Cardiac Surgery Fellow) at his side.

Down the hall, Dr. Meron Tesfaye (Intensivist) and the ICU team are deep in three days' worth of post-operative patients — round after round, case after case, without slowing down.

Two open-heart surgeries. Three days of ICU patients. One team, working non-stop to give these hearts a second chance.

This is what a full week at Cardiac Center Ethiopia looks like. 💪

Tuesday at Cardiac Center Ethiopia — both the OR and the Cath-Lab are running at full capacity today. 🫀🇪🇹

In the operating room, Dr. Shibikom Tamirat (Adult and Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon) is leading two complex congenital heart cases back to back.

In the Cath-Lab, Dr. Mohammed Bedru (Consultant Interventional Cardiologist) is leading two high-risk procedures — including a very high-risk case on a patient in her third trimester of pregnancy.

Two departments, four cases, one team — proof of what our local specialists are capable of, every single day.

This is Cardiac Center Ethiopia at full function. 💪

Another Monday, back to work. ❤️

Today at Cardiac Center Ethiopia, our local surgical team has two cases on the schedule:

🔹 A patient born with a heart valve that has only two flaps instead of three (bicuspid aortic valve). Over time it's become both leaky and narrowed, and the main blood vessel leaving the heart has stretched wider than it should. Our team is repairing the valve and addressing the enlarged vessel.

🔹 A patient with a small hole between the two upper chambers of the heart (an atrial septal defect), causing blood to flow where it shouldn't. Our team is closing it today.

Two different diagnoses, one shared goal: give these hearts the chance to work the way they were meant to.

Every case you see in this OR is handled start to finish by Ethiopian surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurses — proof of what local expertise can do when given the right tools and support.

Follow along as we open the doors to what happens behind the scenes at CHFE. 🫀
