Last Friday, our Regional Program Director, Allison Huggins, alongside Tilahun Asmare (Director of Programs) and Firework Teka (Project Manager), visited the Community-based daycare center in Kirkos Woreda 10, Addis Ababa — supported under Mercy Corps’ Childcare and Livelihood Project.

Alison had the opportunity to spend time with the children and hear directly from their mothers (low-income Women) about how much relief and stability this project brings to their daily lives.

The visit highlighted the vital impact of this initiative: providing low-income mothers with safe, reliable, and affordable childcare so they can confidently pursue income-generating opportunities. Huge thanks to Alison Huggins for visiting the center, engaging directly with the community, and supporting initiatives that uplift working mothers.

Strengthening Accountability, Safeguarding, and Inclusion in Childcare Services

Mercy Corps conducted a capacity-building training for local partner childcare centers focused on Community Accountability Reporting Mechanisms (CARM) and safeguarding.
The training equipped childcare providers with practical skills to establish effective feedback and complaint-handling systems, strengthen safeguarding practices, ensure confidentiality, and create safe and inclusive environments for children and families.
Participants explored key topics including accountability systems, referral pathways, child protection, feedback management, data protection, and service quality improvement. The sessions also reinforced the importance of preventing discrimination and responding appropriately to safeguarding concerns.
As part of the training activities, feedback boxes and awareness posters covering Child Safety, Safeguarding, and CARM were given to participants to reinforce key safeguarding principles and reporting mechanisms.

Economic Recovery for Conflict − Affected Population (ER−CAP) Pause and Reflect Workshop (Jun 22 – 24, 2016)

Mercy Corps, together with our consortium members DRC and First Consult Africa Development (FCAD), successfully conducted a Pause and Reflect Workshop, bringing together country and regional officers to review past achievements, reflect on implementation experiences, and identify strategic directions for future programming.
The workshop served as an important platform for participants to present reports on activities carried out over the past implementation period, engage in meaningful reflection, and discuss key strengths, challenges, and lessons learned. Through collaborative discussions and knowledge sharing, participants gained valuable insights and practical approaches to enhance future interventions and strengthen impact at the community level.
Beyond reviewing progress, the workshop encouraged a culture of collaboration for continuous learning and improvement. Participants demonstrated a strong commitment to translating lessons learned into action and applying new knowledge within their respective regions.
We extend our sincere appreciation to all country and regional officers from Mercy Corps, DRC, and FCAD for their active participation, valuable contributions, and unwavering dedication throughout the workshop. Your time, engagement, and commitment to learning were instrumental in making this event a success.
Together, we continue to learn, adapt, and build stronger pathways toward sustainable impact.

CREATING A STRONGER CHILDCARE ECOSYSTEM REQUIRES COLLABRATION, EVIDENCE, AND SHARED COMMITMENT.

Mercy Corps recently hosted a successful stakeholder consultation on Building an Integrated Childcare System in Addis Ababa on Friday, June 19, 2026, bringing together government officials, the private sector, and non-governmental organizations.

The meeting featured presentations of commissioned assessments examining the childcare legal and regulatory landscape, as well as existing Service delivery models (Private owned, community based, Day-mother run, CSO-based, workplace, PPP and franchised centers). Through insightful discussions and stakeholder feedback, participants identified opportunities to strengthen childcare systems and improve service accessibility and quality.

We are grateful for the active participation and valuable perspectives shared by all attendees, which contributed significantly to the success of the event and its outcomes.

Today marked a significant milestone with the successful inauguration and handover of the Solar Streetlight Project at Sheder Refugee Camp and the surrounding communities in Awbare Woreda, Fafan Zone, Somali Region.
Implemented by Mercy Corps Ethiopia, this initiative aims to enhance safety, security, and access to sustainable energy for both refugees and host communities.
The inauguration ceremony brought together representatives from Mercy Corps, Humanitarian Energy Plc, government officials, community leaders, RRs, UNHCR, and dedicated project staff who contributed to the successful implementation of this impactful project. During the event, participants toured the solar energy facilities, observed the installed technical systems, and reflected on the positive impact the project will have on the daily lives of community members.
This initiative demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainable development, clean energy solutions, and improved living conditions for vulnerable populations. The installation of solar streetlights will significantly enhance nighttime visibility, support community life and activities, and contribute to a safer and more inclusive environment.
We extend our sincere appreciation to all partners, stakeholders, engineers, technicians, field teams, and community members whose collaboration and dedication made this achievement possible.
✨ Together, we are lighting the way toward a brighter, safer, and more sustainable future for Sheder Refugee Camp and its surrounding communities.
