Fikir - Ethiopia National Association on Intellectual Disability- Fenaid The child can often be viewed as a financial burden for families, many of whom are already financially deprived.

FENAID is an indigenous non-profit making, non- political and non- religious associations formed in 1994 by 89 parents of children with intellectual disability. Having a child with intellectual disability is often associated with feelings of shame and embarrassment, and even in contemporary Ethiopian society misconceptions exist, such as this being a punishment from God. Usually, families prefer t

o keep this kind of children hidden behind doors due to fear of the social stigma attached to it.In view of this, parents of children with intellectual disability and other interested individuals came together and established an association with the name Ethiopian National Association on Intellectual Disabilities.

We are thrilled to welcome Troy Providenti from the United States to the 15th World Down Syndrome Day Conference at the United Nations on 23 March 2026.

Troy is a leader with Down syndrome and serves as Director of Strategic Partnerships and CFO in Training at Turn Down For What NYC โ€” an organisation that empowers adults with Down syndrome to build vibrant social lives through events, pop-ups, and an overnight summer camp. What makes Turn Down For What special is that adults with Down syndrome make up around half of the Leadership Team. They are equals, not guests.

Troy is also the founder of Troy's Tie Dye, a small fashion business where he designs and sells hand-dyed clothing to raise funds for the organisation.

Troy will use the art of tie dye as a metaphor for community. When colours stay separate, they are bright on their own โ€” but when they blend, they create something far more powerful. He argues that real inclusion works the same way. Loneliness happens when people are kept separate, even when they are in the same room. Connection grows when people are trusted, valued, and truly needed.

Troy knows what loneliness feels like โ€” and he also knows what real belonging looks like. His presentation is not just a talk. It is proof that it is possible. ๐ŸŽจ

Watch LIVE on UN Web TV on 23 March.
