The 2024–25 Ethiopia Demographic and Health Survey is out!
Skilled care at birth: the number that's moved the most.
Nearly 2 in 3 births in Ethiopia are now attended by a skilled health provider, up from just 37% in 2016 to 64% today. That's one of the fastest-moving indicators in the entire 2024–25 Ethiopia Demographic and Health Survey, and it reflects real investment: more trained providers, more functioning health posts, more mothers reaching care in time.
It's real progress. It's also a reminder of how much is still at stake. Ethiopia's maternal mortality ratio stands at 141 deaths per 100,000 live births, meaning the lifetime risk of a maternal death is 1 in 167 women. Every one of those numbers is a mother, a family, a community.
Skilled birth attendance is one of the strongest predictors of whether a mother and baby survive delivery. The climb from 37% to 64% is exactly the kind of progress that starts closing that gap and exactly why it needs to keep going.

🎨 Painting Choices: A UNFPA Art Initiative
Turning stories of health, rights, and resilience into art.

We're excited to welcome 10 talented art students from Addis Ababa University's Alle School of Fine Arts and Design to this initiative. Over the coming weeks, these young artists will work closely with a multidisciplinary jury to translate real stories of health, rights, resilience, and recovery onto canvas.
Each artist will bring their own unique perspective to these themes.
Their finished pieces will be showcased in a final exhibition, with the winning works acquired by UNFPA to support future advocacy and awareness campaigns.

21 health service providers from Ethiopia's Somali Region completed a 10-day advanced KAIZEN training to strengthen quality of care, from patient admission to discharge. 🇯🇵🇪🇹
Supported by JICA Ethiopia - エチオピア under UNFPA Ethiopia's Japan-funded TICAD Project, the training is helping frontline health workers deliver better, more efficient patient care in Afar and Somali regions.
