The UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Ethiopia, Mr. Ozonnia Ojielo, visited today a safe house operated by the Association for Women’s Sanctuary and Development (AWSAD) in Addis Ababa, recognizing the organization’s vital work supporting survivors of gender-based violence.

Since 2006, UNFPA has partnered with AWSAD, a pioneering civil society organization that established Ethiopia’s first safe house. Through this partnership, UNFPA supports four AWSAD-run safe houses in Debre Birhan and Dessie in Amhara Region, Hawassa in Sidama Region, and Addis Ababa.

AWSAD provides comprehensive support to survivors and their children, including continuous counseling, medical and legal assistance, skills training, and safe accommodation. These services play a crucial role in helping survivors recover, rebuild their lives, and reintegrate into their communities.

Strengthening survivor-centered services and safe spaces is essential to preventing and responding to gender-based violence and ensuring that survivors can move forward with dignity, safety, and hope.

Strengthening partnership for a healthier, more empowered future

UNFPA Ethiopia and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have signed today a Memorandum of Cooperation to strengthen joint efforts to advance the health, well-being and empowerment of women, adolescents and youth in Ethiopia.

The partnership will deepen collaboration in key areas including maternal health, gender equality, adolescent and youth health and well-being, and population dynamics within the Humanitarian–Development–Peace Nexus.

Building on collaboration that began in 2024, JICA and UNFPA have already worked together to empower women and girls through menstrual health and hygiene, livelihood promotion and partnerships with Japanese private companies. In 2026, JICA also supported two rounds of KAIZEN training for around 50 health service providers in the Afar and Somali regions, contributing to improved quality of health services under a UNFPA project funded by the Government of Japan.

The partnership will now expand to adolescent and youth empowerment through sports, in collaboration with Japanese private companies—turning the TICAD 9 call to “Co-create innovative solutions with Africa” into action.

By combining their respective expertise, UNFPA and JICA are strengthening efforts to advance the Sustainable Development Goals and create opportunities for young people to fulfill their potential, safeguard their health and well-being, and contribute to a peaceful and prosperous society. 🇪🇹

A technical discussion was held on the 2025 National Health Facility Assessment draft report on reproductive health commodities and services, bringing together representatives from the Ministry of Health, Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Supply Service, UNFPA Ethiopia, the Consortium of Reproductive Health Associations (CORHA), and other key partners.

The occasion provided an important platform to review the findings, exchange technical perspectives, and identify opportunities for program improvement.

The discussion highlighted the importance of using evidence to strengthen programs and improve maternal health outcomes.

Through presentations and open dialogue, participants explored key findings and practical areas for action to improve the availability, quality and use of reproductive health commodities and services.

Continued collaboration and evidence-driven action will be essential to translating these findings into stronger programs and better health outcomes.

At the 5th Sexual & Reproductive Health Partners’ Forum held in Bishoftu, UNFPA Ethiopia congratulated the Government of Ethiopia and the Ministry of Health on the country’s progress in advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights.

While important gains have been made, continued action is needed to address challenges such as teenage childbearing and unmet need for family planning.

UNFPA remains committed to supporting sustainable financing, localization, equity and innovation, while expanding voluntary, rights-based family planning and bringing contraceptive choices closer to communities.

🌍 From early warnings to early action

At the Africa Early Warnings for All Forum in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, UNFPA Ethiopia highlighted how connecting climate early warnings with mobile health and nutrition clinics and grassroots community outreach can save lives in humanitarian crises.

These mobile units take life-saving sexual and reproductive health services, maternal care, and emergency dignity kits directly to people—where and when they need them most.

Early warnings are only truly effective when they lead to early action and reach those most vulnerable first. 💙

Strengthening Midwifery Education to Save Lives

Today, we launched and held a consultative meeting on the UNFPA Ethiopia-supported project to strengthen pre-service midwifery education, funded by the Government of China.

The pilot project is being implemented in selected midwifery training institutions in Addis Ababa, Amhara, and Tigray regions, with a focus on bridging the gap between classroom learning and clinical practice.

As part of the initiative, essential equipment to strengthen skills laboratories—including anatomical models, simulation tools, and handheld ultrasound machines—was handed over to participating training institutions.

The project will strengthen learning facilities, enhance the capacity of clinical preceptors through training and mentorship, and improve the practical competencies of future midwives.

This is an investment in better-trained midwives, safer pregnancies, and healthier mothers and newborns.

Our sincere appreciation to the Ministry of Health for its leadership and to the Ethiopian Midwives Association for its partnership in advancing this lifesaving initiative.

The Advocacy Forum, co-organized by UNFPA Ethiopia and CORHA, concluded today with consensus and concrete action plans to advance quality standards, regulation, and supply chain management of menstrual health and hygiene products.

A big thank you to Government ministries, , young leaders, private sector, CSOs, bilateral partners, and all stakeholders for their commitment and contributions toward improving access to quality menstrual health products.

Together, we are taking important steps toward a future where every woman and girl can manage her menstruation with dignity, choice, and access to safe, quality products.

UNFPA Ethiopia is participating in an advocacy forum on Menstrual Health & Hygiene, co-organized with and other key stakeholders, underway in Hawassa, capital of the Sidama Region.

The forum brings together stakeholders and partners to advance and strengthen Ethiopia’s menstrual health market.

Discussions are focusing on product standards and quality, tax reform, local manufacturing, and stronger public-private partnerships to help ensure safe, affordable, and accessible menstrual health products for women and girls across Ethiopia.

The forum is also highlighting the potential of local manufacturing and private-sector innovation to build stronger, more sustainable supply chains.

Together, we can remove systemic barriers and create a menstrual health market that supports women’s health, dignity, and empowerment.

Building resilience where climate and conflict intersect.

UNFPA Ethiopia recently welcomed a delegation from the KOICA Ethiopia Office for a joint field monitoring mission across the South Ethiopia Region under our flagship initiative, "Building Adaptive Resilience for People Affected by Conflict and Climate Crisis, Focusing on Youth in the Afar and South Ethiopia Regions."

Implemented alongside UNHCR Ethiopia and local authorities, this project applies the Humanitarian-Development-Peace (HDP) Nexus approach to deliver critical protection and healthcare services to young people and displacement-affected communities.

During the visit across Dasenech, Karat-Konso, Karat Zuria, and Segen Zuria, the team observed transformative impact on the ground:

Maternal & Youth Health: Mobile health teams delivering essential sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services directly to hard-to-reach communities.
Protection & GBV Response: Active legal aid support and community-led Gender-Based Violence (GBV) awareness sessions engaging local Peace Committees.
Youth Empowerment: Active participation of Youth Volunteer Committees driving local peacebuilding and disaster risk management efforts.
We extend our sincere gratitude to KOICA for their continued partnership and commitment to protecting the rights, health, and dignity of women and young people in Ethiopia.

🌍 Advancing Health Education and Wellbeing for Every Young Person!

Today, , in collaboration with CORHA and with support from Canada’s EmpowerED Programme, launched the Education for Health & Wellbeing manuals.

📘 Tailored to meet the diverse needs of vulnerable young people, including adolescents and young people living with HIV (AYPLHIV) and young people with disabilities (YPWD), these manuals are an important step toward more inclusive and accessible health education.

The launch brought together the Ministry of Health, CSOs, and young people, united by a shared commitment to promoting inclusive health education, empowerment, and wellbeing for all young people. 💙
