During his visit to SOS Children's Villages in Ethiopia Harar Programme, our Goodwill Ambassador, Alemayehu Tadesse, spent time with children, young people, caregivers, and foster families, witnessing the power of care, belonging, and family based support.

His visit celebrated the people and relationships that help children grow with confidence, dignity, and hope for the future.

For Hiwot, life once felt overwhelming. Today, she speaks about the changes she has made, the small business she has built, and the joy of being able to provide for her children.

Her journey was supported through the Arba Minch Family and Community Strengthening Project, implemented by SOS Children’s Villages in Ethiopia with the support of SOS Children’s Villages Iceland (SOS Barnaþorpin).

Mihret, a mother of three from Lalibela, has spent years working hard to build a better future for her family. After developing her skills in hairdressing, she took a chance on starting a small business of her own.

But when conflict disrupted her livelihood, Mihret faced another difficult chapter.

Through the Family Strengthening and Child Development Project in Lalibela, implemented by SOS Children’s Villages in Ethiopia with the support of SOS-Kinderdorf Schweiz | SOS Villages d’Enfants Suisse, Mihret found an opportunity to move forward.

At 16, Afnaan entered a classroom for the first time.

Having lost her eyesight in early childhood, she had spent much of her life at home, with few opportunities to learn, build confidence or imagine a future of her own.

Today, with the support of a teacher who believed in her, accessible learning tools and a growing love for Braille, Afnaan is learning to write independently, and dreaming of becoming a teacher herself.

Her story reminds us that literacy is about more than reading and writing. It is about access, inclusion, independence and having the opportunity to shape your own future.
