At SOS Children’s Villages in Ethiopia, we believe quality childcare starts with investing in the people who provide it.

That is why we are proud to have contributed to the development of Ethiopia’s national Child Care Providers Occupational Standard, Curriculum, and Training Module through the Leave No Youth Behind (LNYB) Project, with support from SOS Børnebyerne and funding from the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA).

This milestone strengthens the foundation for more professional, consistent, and quality childcare across the country, helping create environments where children can feel safe, supported, and cared for.

Our contribution was also recognized with a Certificate of Appreciation for our technical leadership, financial support, and continued commitment to strengthening childcare systems in Ethiopia.

“This would have been impossible in earlier years. Back then, we neither listened to one another nor returned stolen livestock,” Aden says.

Along the Oromia–Somali border, where ethnic tensions, territorial disputes, competition over resources and years of violence have deeply affected communities, a new approach to conflict resolution is taking root through SOS Children’s Villages in Ethiopia’s Practice Peace and Live in Tranquility project, funded by the European Union in Ethiopia.

When cattle were stolen from pastoralist families in Doba district, Oromia Region, a phone call between two Cross-Border Peace Committee members opened a different path. Instead of retaliation, they brought communities together through dialogue, and the cattle were peacefully returned.

An incident that could have deepened old divisions instead became a moment to strengthen new relationships.

On 13 August 2026, SOS Children’s Villages in Ethiopia officially launched the ARISE Project – Anticipatory Action and Resilience through Integrated Systems and Enhanced Food Systems (2026–2029) in Wolaita S**o, Ethiopia.

Supported by SOS Villages d'Enfants Monde - Luxembourg, the initiative will be implemented in five selected kebeles of Geze Gofa Woreda, bringing together government representatives, partners, like-minded organizations, staff, and key stakeholders around a shared vision of building stronger, more resilient communities that can anticipate, adapt, and thrive in the face of future shocks.

Following the devastating 2024 landslides, communities in Geze Gofa continue to face challenges affecting livelihoods, food and nutrition security, access to essential services, and overall resilience. ARISE responds to these challenges through a Humanitarian-Development Nexus approach, connecting immediate needs with longer-term, sustainable solutions.

ARISE aims to directly reach 13,712 people and indirectly benefit 92,888 people, contributing to more resilient communities, sustainable livelihoods, and better nutrition across Geze Gofa.

What does it take for young people to thrive?

Skills and education matter, but sometimes, what makes the difference is having the opportunity to put those skills into action. For young people everywhere, their path may look different, but their desire for opportunity, dignity, meaningful participation, decent work, quality education and a sustainable future is universal.

For 21-year-old Dese, it meant being given the opportunity to turn his skills into experience, and take a step closer to the future he imagined for himself.

His journey is one example of what can happen when potential meets opportunity.

While Selam highlighted some of our key areas of work, our programmes extend across many more areas that help children, young people and families thrive.

Our work also includes supporting early childhood development, quality education, and skills development to help children and young people build strong foundations for the future. We strengthen peacebuilding efforts through the Humanitarian-Development-Peace (HDP) Nexus and conflict-sensitive programming, provide curative and preventive healthcare through our health facility in Gode alongside mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) for communities affected by crises and conflict, support children in street situations through outreach, rehabilitation, family reintegration, and essential services, and promote inclusion by ensuring children with disabilities and their caregivers have access to the support and opportunities they need.

The Continental Study on Children Without Parental Care in Africa estimates that 35 million children across the continent are living without parental care.

This reality underscores the urgent need to strengthen child protection systems and ensure that every child grows up in the care of a safe and nurturing family.

From 29–31 July 2026, government representatives, child protection experts, development partners, representatives of the participating SOS Children’s Villages Member Associations from Benin, Ethiopia, Kenya and Malawi, and representatives from the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC) gathered in Addis Ababa for the Multi-Country Care Reform (MCCR) Framework Programme Revision and Recalibration Workshop.

The workshop provided a platform to review and refine the programme framework, strengthen collaboration among partners and explore approaches that place children’s rights, relationships and wellbeing at the center of care reform.

When the weight of a family rests on one mother’s shoulders, where does she find the strength to continue?

After her life took an unexpected turn, Tinsae faced the challenge of raising her children while building a future for them. Through the Grow Equal Project, implemented by SOS Children’s Villages in Ethiopia, she found new opportunities to strengthen her livelihood, reconnect with her children, and create a more hopeful future for her family.
