SOS Children's Villages in Ethiopia

SOS Children's Villages in Ethiopia We believe that truly bonding with a child has the
power to change the world.

Since 1974, the organization has been active in the field of social protection of children and young people without parental care as well as families at risk. SOS Ethiopia cooperates with a number of CSOs, government entities and private institutions locally. Areas of cooperation range from joint planning, financing, implementation and influencing on social protection and youth empowerment. SOS Et

hiopia follows a development approach, which goes beyond provision of essential services, by developing interventions in capacity building and in strengthening of community support systems which build enduring impact. SOS Ethiopia actively participates in the creation of public policies and advocates for the rights of children and young people at social risk with the ultimate goal of each child to grow up in a family. It has been operating in different parts of the country through its seven program locations located at Addis Ababa, Bahirdar, Gode, Harar, Hawassa, Mekelle, and Jimma.

Sima, an 18-year-old student from a rural village near Shashemene, was determined to pursue his education, but being born with a hearing impairment made the journey far from easy. Communication barriers and limited access to the support he needed often left him struggling to keep up in school, while financial challenges at home added further uncertainty to his learning path.

An opportunity through the SHASHE Project, implemented by SOS Children’s Villages in Ethiopia with support from SOS-Kinderdorf Schweiz | SOS Villages d’Enfants Suisse, became a turning point in his educational journey.

What followed began to change not only his experience in the classroom, but also his confidence, sense of belonging, and hopes for the future. Read the full story to learn more: https://www.sos-ethiopia.org/stories/sima-s-story

Belaynesh, a mother of three from Arba Minch, was struggling to hold her household together as financial pressures made it harder to meet even the most basic needs of her children. Like many caregivers in similar situations, she quietly carried the weight of uncertainty about their future.

An opportunity through the Arba Minch Family and Community Strengthening Project, implemented by SOS Children’s Villages in Ethiopia with support from SOS Children’s Villages Iceland (SOS Barnaþorpin), soon became a turning point for her family.

What happened after began to reshape not only her livelihood, but the daily life of her children as well. Read the full story to learn more: https://www.sos-ethiopia.org/stories/belaynesh-s-story

Today, many children are growing up amid overlapping challenges, poverty, displacement, limited access to essential services, and other circumstances that put their well-being and future at risk.

At SOS Children's Villages in Ethiopia, we know that creating lasting change means looking beyond immediate needs. It means walking alongside children and families with programmes designed to respond to the realities they face, while strengthening the conditions they need to thrive.

From family strengthening and child protection to education, health, youth empowerment, and humanitarian response, our work is rooted in one belief: no child should grow up alone.

Because when families are supported, children can thrive, and stronger futures become possible.

SOS Children’s Villages in Ethiopia has secured a landmark ETB 50 million contribution from the Amhara Regional State Government Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Fund Office (ARRFO) to support the expansion of the Children in Street Situations project to Dessie and Kombolcha. The contribution was formalized through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Addis Ababa on 4 June 2026.

Combined with funding secured through our partnership with SOS Barnebyer, this investment will help expand access to care, protection, and opportunities for children and young people in street situations, while strengthening locally led solutions and shared responsibility for child and youth wellbeing.

This partnership represents an important milestone in advancing sustainable, nationally owned responses to the challenges facing underserved children and youth.

Through the Green Growth: Empowering Youth for a Green Future project, supported by The Embassy of Canada to Ethiopia through Canada’s International Development – Global Affairs Canada, Betelhem developed practical fashion design skills while learning how sustainable fashion practices can reduce waste and make more efficient use of resources. The training strengthened her confidence, enhanced her employability, and equipped her with the knowledge to contribute to a more environmentally responsible fashion industry.

Young women like Betelhem are proving that green skills and entrepreneurship can go hand in hand, creating pathways to sustainable income and lasting community impact.
