East African Contractors
Many African countries are entering the construction sector. And, many reasons could be associated with it. the fact that there were not as such immense infrastructures built during the colonial era and that even those constructed could not guarantee sustainability of lives. That is why construction is becoming nowadays their agenda. On the other hand, countries like Rwanda where civil war and conflict were riff need construction industry which is flourishing now as an exit. Ethiopia is an east Africa country launching and implementing huge construction infrastructures. It has become a fore front runner by launching very big infrastructures particularly in the past five years. Let’s narrow our horizons and focus on three east African countries namely Ethiopia, Uganda and Kenya. In Ethiopia the Ethiopian Construction contractors’ association, established in Tikemet 20, 1984 E.C, and sphere head the process. With over 1500 members, it is contributing its share to the growth and development of the construction industry in Ethiopia. It not only tables, by commenting, various constriction issues for discussion, but also facilitates flow of information to and from. ‘Base line Survey’ is one such study presenting Ethiopia’s general construction image and related details. Moreover, relentless effort was made to launch papers and presentations on one of the most burning problems and dangers of the country- corruption. This is not to mention the consultancy services that it procured on the sector’s problems, challenges and solutions. Whenever the government formulates, ratifies rules and regulations, association’s studies and findings are now being incorporated. Mendeq is the association’s quarterly organ that reports and documents construction related issues, news, views and articles in and around the country with the help of experts and consultants. Ethio-con is a yearly international exhibition held colorfully on very first weeks of the Ethiopian New year. Local and international suppliers and exhibitors display their products and services. This is not to mention the knowledge and experience being shared between and among construction firms. Discussions, sells networking, marketing and promotion are also part and parcel of the week long exhibition at the renowned exhibition center here in Addis. Ethiopian contractors have got the opportunity to travel to various parts of the world in connection with this exhibition. For instance, they are participating in the construction exhibitions in North America and Germany. They are bringing knowledge and skills o their organization, their country and themselves. No doubt, the associations’ members’ capacity is gradually built thanks to their exposure in such exhibitions. In short, Ethio-con is becoming one of the biggest international exhibitions in Africa. The association, since three years back, is working in collaboration with the German construction coalition- BGV. Based in Ethiopia, BGV is operating now in Ethiopia, Uganda and Kenya. It is paving the way for Germany Construction Companies to come to and operate in Ethiopia. It aims at transforming Africa’s particularly east Africa’s construction industry to a higher level through cooperation and collaboration. That is why it provided ISO training for Ethiopians, Ugandan, and Kenyan construction associations in an effort to boost their quality. Apart from creating enabling environment for contractors; it is also providing training in other areas too. In the past three years it has undertaken a number of commendable activities. For instance it has helped other countries to emulate from the experiences of Ethiopia. Uganda and Kenya are now publishing magazines with the help of BGV. It was me who gave them how to make magazines and solicit sponsors. The ‘contractor’ would be the name that Uganda will be carrying soon when they start publishing their own quality version. Because its efforts proved successfully in the past three years, the BGV project would be continuing in the next three years too. The last year meeting held at Royal Suits hotel in Kampala, Uganda proves the continuing and lasting construction relation between Germany and east African countries. It created awareness and promotion about Africa on German counter parts. Debates and discussions were held on the way forward, rules and regulations to be amended, enabling environment to be created. I have learnt that the meeting was very fruitful successful. Similar experience and exposure was held also at Nairobi hotel in Kenya. Credit guarantee and related issues were raised and discussed here too. No doubt, Germany is one of the advanced nations of the world. It is known for its lasting and sustained relation and cooperation with African countries. It has helped many African countries get scholarship. The role the Goethe Institute plays in cementing Ethio-German relation is immense. This relation has now grown to higher joint venture activities. It was Ms. Anna Fuchsmann and Mr. Heinz Rittmann who did a lot in the last three years in Africa representing BGV. They are really our benefactor.
All in all, what east African countries and BGV are doing is very encouraging and promising.
