Transparency International Ethiopia organized a training session for court presidents, judges, and colleagues in the Sidama region. The training aimed to equip first-instance court presidents, judges, and colleagues with the knowledge and skills to adhere to high standards of independence, fairness, impartiality, integrity, accountability, and transparency. Mr. Biniyam Solomon, the Hawassa Area High Court President, opened the session and welcomed the participants, briefly explaining the purpose of the event.

Mr. Woyessa Woka, the Sidama regional representative of TIE, delivered the training. He concluded by recommending practical ways to combat judicial corruption to ensure that the judiciary retains its time-honored tradition of integrity and good image. He also underlined that the war against corruption in the judiciary/courts should be holistic and target not only judges but also any employee in the judiciary engaged in corrupt practices.

Mr. Biniyam Solomon, President of Hawassa Area High Court in Sidama region, collaborated with the trainers during the practical session. He noted, during his concluding remarks, that the eradication of corruption from the justice system is a joint task involving not only judges and members of the legal profession but literally all stakeholders, including all branches of government, the media, and civil society. He appreciated Transparency International Ethiopia for taking such an initiative and called for similar initiatives to continue.

Finally, Mr. Woyessa expressed appreciation to Mr. Biniyam Solomon, all participants, and colleagues who played a pivotal role in facilitating and organizing the event.

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between Transparency International Ethiopia (TIE) and FDRE Public Procurement and Property Authority (FPPA) to implement activities related to Public Procurement

FPPA, the government organ vested with the power to regulate public procurement and property administration in Ethiopia, and TIE have signed MoU on the 25th of January 2023 at the head office of FPPA in Addis Aababa. Ato Haji Ibsa Gendo, Director General at FPPA, and Ato Samuel Kassahun, Executive Director of TIE represented their respective Institutions during the MoU signing ceremony. The objective of the agreement is to formalize the already existing relationship between FPPA and TIE with a view to realizing common objectives in the realm of public procurement.

Ato Haji Gendo noted, during his opening speech, that working together with TIE and similar institutions with the common goal of realizing fair, transparent, non-discriminatory and modern procurement system is beneficial to the country. Ato Haji appreciated the initiation taken by TIE to work together with FPPA in various areas relevant to public procurement. He underscored that FPPA’s offices are open for any collaboration requests regarding research, workshops, training and capacity development, and other modalities of cooperation. Ato Haji and Ato Samuel gave directions to concerned staffs of both institutions during the signing ceremony to develop a joint action plan and begin implementing the plan as soon as possible.

Ato Samuel, on his part, having appreciated the welcoming spirit extended by FPPA, expressed his optimism related to the agreement and upcoming activities to be jointly implemented by both institutions. He mentioned that working to create a transparent public procurement in Ethiopia is one of the strategic goals of TIE and remarked that having the opportunity to formalize existing relations with FPPA would further strengthen current and upcoming interventions by TIE in the area of public procurement.

It was mentioned at the event that TIE and FPPA will collaborate on the training of suppliers and procuring bodies on the Electronic Government Procurement (eGP) system to be conducted in the beginning of February.

Transparency Ethiopia organized a roundtable discussions on Investigative Journalism

Nov, 24/2022:- A 5th roundtable discussion was held at Harmony Hotel Addis Ababa focusing on the issue of challenges of Investigative Journalism in fighting corruption and promoting democratic governance and rule of Law in Ethiopia, and its possible remedies.The roundtable forum assembled together 20 high level Journalists and other media personnel from various media houses.

The workshop was opened by Samuel Kassahun, Executive Director of Transparency Ethiopia, who briefly discussed the purpose of the session. Ato Samuel also encouraged participants to employ the knowledge they acquire from the session in the fight against corruption and the promotion of ethics.

Ato Tibebu Bekele, Director of Ahadu Radio and a seasoned and highly regarded journalist,
gave an insightful presentation on the importance of investigative journalism; tips for Investigative Journalism; challenges of Investigative Journalism in Ethiopia, and concluded with some recommendations to overcome the challenges against Investigative journalism.

After the tea break, participants discussed on the challenges faced by media regarding investigative journalism in fighting corruption.
Participants forwarded eye opening perspectives on the challenges and the existing legal gap in protecting journalists. They also aired ideas on possible remedies to these challenges.
The discussion was concluded by Professor Shiferaw Taye and Ato Tibebu's reflection on relevant issues.

Samuel,TE's Executive Director, further reflected on the challenges and remedies raised by the participants before wrapping up the session.

"There is no denying that resolving to fight corruption is a commendable step in the right direction. Nevertheless, a considerable number of people wonder if the latest anti-corruption drive is another publicity stunt fated to flounder as well due to a raft of critical issues. Transparency Ethiopia signs a Memorandum of Understanding with Wolaita S**o University.

November 17,2022:- TE has signed an MoU with Wolaita S**o University to help implement various activities under the umbrella project "Ensuring Participation of Actors for Transparency and Accountability of Institutions to Support the fight against corruption and promote Democratic Governance and Rule of Law in Ethiopia " funded by EU CSF-III.

In addition to working together in the overall fight against corruption and the promotion of ethics in the region, the MoU particularly focuses on trainings and discussions forums to be organized by TE to engage Wolaita S**o University students.

TE looks forward to a fruitful partnership with the University.
