How it works:
๐Ÿ›’ A local market is set up in the camp, empowering vendors & supporting the local economy
๐Ÿ’ณ Selected refugee households receive bi-weekly e-voucher top-ups
๐Ÿ“ฑ Families use their e-voucher cards to buy fresh food, while vendors scan cards with a pre-installed app to check balances & process payments

Displacement increases womenโ€™s exposure to gender-based violence, making access to protection, psychosocial support, and awareness services critical during emergency responses.
Through the Ethiopian Rapid Response Mechanism-ET-RRM project, funded by EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid, Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, and Irish Aid, DCA continues to support displaced communities in Yalo Woreda, Afar Region.
GBV and child protection awareness sessions are being carried out across IDP sites in Yalo Woreda. Discussions focus on key protection risks and the support services available within the sites. Participants are actively engaged: sharing experiences, raising concerns, and helping shape practical, relevant conversations.
At the same time, psychosocial support is being provided to displaced women affected by the recent conflict in the area, many of whom are living in temporary shelters under difficult conditions. These sessions are creating a safe space for women to express their experiences, manage stress, and begin regaining a sense of stability.
Individuals requiring additional support are being connected with available services for continued follow-up.

As we mark International Women's Day , we embrace the power of giving to gain: when women thrive, we all rise. Today, some of us at DanChurchAid Ethiopia reflect on the women who inspire us.

Over the past several weeks, we have been highlighting and celebrating women role models who lead and inspire their communities across DCA and our partner projects. While we wrap up our series here, the champions of everyday continue to inspire us through generosity, leadership, and collaboration.

Who is a woman that inspires you? Keep the ripple going and let us know in the comments.

Beno, 28, is an entrepreneur from Gambella. โ€œI am the one who feeds my family and takes care of everyone at home,โ€ she says. Managing daily chores, caring for her 8-year-old son, and having limited income-generating opportunities made it hard to imagine a different future.
Through the From Dormancy to Vigor project, implemented by our partner Empowering Next Generation - EngEthiopia, Beno was organized into a group of 10. The project supports youth with life skills training, business planning, mentorship, and start-up funding to build sustainable livelihoods and engage more actively in their communities.
Together with her group, Beno took part in training on life skills, business management, and entrepreneurship. With start-up support, they launched a cultural food business. The business now allows Beno to support her family independently and manage her household with more confidence.
โ€œThe training helped us learn how to run a business,โ€ Beno says. โ€œNow we can support our family on our own.โ€ The process strengthened her self-belief, leadership, and the value she places on teamwork.
Looking ahead, Beno plans to grow the business and expand its impact locally. โ€œOur dream is to grow bigger and create job opportunities for other people in our neighborhood,โ€ she shares.
Step by Step, Beno is turning challenges into opportunities and inspiring others around her along the way. ๐Ÿฒโœจ

Lokoyo Yerkol, 25, a mother of three, lives in Arikol Kebele of Dassenech Woreda. After fleeing her home and farmland in Kapusiya Kebele due to flooding from the Omo River, like hundreds of others, Lokoyo and her family sought refuge in Arikol, where life as a displaced family has become a daily struggle.
In February 2025, Lokoyo was invited to join Yedhimi Small Scale Enterprise, an income-generating group of 14 members established by the SPREAD Project, implemented with support from European Union and Danida. Today, she proudly serves as the Treasurer of the group โ€” a role she never imagined holding.
โ€œWhen I joined, DCA showed us how energy-efficient stoves work,โ€ Lokoyo recalls. โ€œAt first, we received some stoves as a demonstration, and we immediately saw the difference. Then we were trained on how to produce them ourselves โ€” now we can make them to sell.โ€

In the surrounding communities, most families still cook over traditional three-stone fires, heavily dependent on firewood. This not only drives deforestation but also exposes women and girls to gender-based violence (GBV) when they venture deep into forests to collect wood. Inside the home, the thick smoke from these fires fills kitchens, creating dangerous health risks such as respiratory illnesses and eye infections.
Lokoyo remembers those days vividly:
โ€œThe smoke was too much,โ€ she says. โ€œSometimes our eyes burned, and our children coughed all the time. But with these new stoves, we use much less wood, and there is hardly any smoke. We can even bake injera while cooking stew at the same time. It has changed everything.โ€

The project has gone beyond training by supporting the group with the construction of a production workshop, providing essential inputs like soil and sand, and preparing to inject seed capital to kickstart large-scale production.

With these resources, Yedhimi Small Scale Enterprise is now producting energy-efficient stoves, which consume far less fuel and create cleaner, healthier cooking environments. Members have also received entrepreneurship and savings training, equipping them with the skills to operate as a formal small-scale enterprise.
For Lokoyo, serving as Treasurer is more than managing finances โ€” it is helping her develop critical leadership skills, including decision-making, organization, and teamwork.
โ€œWe have established a profit margin of 400 ETB per stove,โ€ Lokoyo explains. โ€œWe bring our products to the market and hope to introduce these stoves to the larger community. We want to become role models.โ€

Energy-efficient stoves are designed to use less firewood while producing more heat and less smoke than traditional open fires or basic stoves. The energy-efficient stoves are transforming more than just household cooking. By reducing firewood demand, the initiative helps conserve forests, prevent soil erosion, and enhance rainwater infiltration โ€” critical steps toward restoring the local environment. Less time spent collecting firewood means women and girls are safer and have more time for education and income-generating activities.

The Ethiopian Rapid Response Mechanism-ET-RRM continues to deliver immediate, life-saving support to displaced communities in Afar.
Through the mechanism, in Yalo, DCA provided multi-purpose cash assistance to 966 displaced households, enabling families to meet their most urgent needs.
Each household received a one-time transfer of ETB 14,000 through direct cash-in-hand support. This assistance helps families cover immediate essentials such as food, clothing, and shelter.
Thanks to the support of EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid, Irish Aid, and Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, we are able to provide immediate assistance when it matters most.

This is Seada, a 20-year-old entrepreneur from Gambella. Not long ago, she was unemployed, unsure of her direction, and lacking the resources to turn her motivation into action. โ€œI didnโ€™t know I could run a business on my ownโ€ she recalls.
Through a youth skills development project implemented by our partner Empowering Next Generation - EngEthiopia , Seada joined life-skills and entrepreneurship training, followed by hands-on practice in roasting and grinding coffee. For the first time, she learned how to plan a small business, manage money, work in a team, and serve customers. With start-up support and regular follow-up, she began putting those skills to use immediately
The change was practical. She started a coffee shop that now provides her with daily income. โ€œThe training helped me believe in myself,โ€ Seada explains. โ€œI learned how to manage money, communicate with customers, and earn on my own.โ€
Today, Seada is financially independent, actively working on her business, and confident in sharing her ideas. She is saving, planning, and setting her sights on the future, expanding her business, packaging and branding her coffee, and opening ha bigger cafรฉ. Her goal is not only growth, but impact. โ€œI hope to one day create opportunities for other young women to see whatโ€™s possible.โ€ โ˜• โ˜•

Meet Selamawit a 32-year-old entrepreneur, mother of two, and co-manager of โ€œSelamawit, Aynalem and their Friendsโ€โ€”a youth-led chicken breeding enterprise in Kirkose, Addis Ababa.
Selamawit and her team started their chicken breeding business with motivation but limited resources. They had the will to work, but lacked space, reliable poultry feed, and the business skills needed to grow beyond survival.
Through the Seeds of Change project, implemented by TaYA - our local Partner, Selamawitโ€™s group strengthened their enterprise with practical training in teamwork, financial planning, and business development, paired with a seed grant and ongoing mentorship. With better coops, bulk feed purchasing, and stronger management, the business has doubled its capacity. Healthier chickens, clearer plans, and stronger collaboration now define their work.
โ€œThis business is no longer just about survival,โ€ Selamawit says. โ€œWe are building something that will last.โ€
Looking ahead, she and her partners are planning to open new branches and establish their own modern poultry farmโ€”creating jobs for other young people along the way. Selamawitโ€™s leadership shows whatโ€™s possible when skills, opportunity, and vision come together. ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ“ˆ

Did you know that in addition to economic empowerment, Self-Help Groups (SHGs) are powerful drivers of social change?

By shifting mindsets and building collective confidence, they catalyze empowerment and transform communities from within.

Kibralem Fikadu, 25, from Ari Zone, knows this firsthand. Married at 17, she lived under harmful traditional practices that limited her decision-making power. For many girls in her community, education and leadership opportunities felt out of reach, while early marriage and restrictive gender roles were the norm.

Things began to change when Kibralem joined a Self-Help Group through the Empowered Women Leadership for Gender Equality project, implemented by our partner WE-Action Ethiopia. The Self-Help Group, a community-based group where members support one another socially, economically, and collectively, created space for learning, reflection, and action. Through the SHG, Kibralem experienced,

โœ… Collective savings and mutual support: Members save small amounts regularly and can access loans from the group fund to meet household needs, start small businesses, or handle emergencies, thereby building financial independence.

โœ… Learning and capacity building: The SHG created a safe space where members learn about rights, leadership, entrepreneurship and financial skills,

โœ… Collective action and social change: As trust and awareness grow, members begin to act together, share experiences, and upliftt each other.

With this, Kibralem began to see new possibilities for herself and others. Determined that young girls should not have to experience the same limitations she did, Kibralem began challenging harmful norms, raising awareness on gender-based violence, encouraging girlsโ€™ education, and leading by example. Over time, her confidence and leadership grew, inspiring others across her community.

โ€œChange starts when women support each other and act together,โ€ Kibralem says. Her journey shows that Self-Help Groups are more than groups, they are catalysts that ripple outward, driving lasting social change.

Meet Misira, a mother of six from Berbere Woreda, Bale Zone. After losing her husband, she became the sole provider for her family, collecting and selling firewoodโ€”often walking long distances just to make ends meet. โ€œIt was a daily struggle,โ€ She recalls.

Through the Danida supported project, Misira received goats as part of a climate-smart livelihood initiative. With her hard work and care, what started with few goats has grown into a small herdโ€”providing milk that improves her familyโ€™s nutrition and a steady source of income.

โ€œI like my coffee with milk, and now I donโ€™t worry about drinking black coffee anymore,โ€ Misira shares with a smile. Beyond providing for her family, she has also started to save from her earnings.

Looking ahead, she plans to invest in milking cows and expand her livestock. โ€œMy skills in taking care of animals, combined with living at the foot of a mountain with good grazing opportunities, will definitely help me,โ€ she adds, hopeful and realistic about the future.

Sete, a resident of Gazgibla woreda in Waghimra Zone, is rebuilding stability for her family through determination and careful decision-making.

โ€œFor a long time, I struggled with constant financial pressure,โ€ Sete recalls. As the head of her household and living in rented accommodation, covering everyday needs was a constant struggle. Limited income led to difficult choices, leading to growing debt that affected both her familyโ€™s wellbeing and connection to the community.

Through DCAโ€™s Multi-Purpose Cash Assistance intervention, implemented as part of the Ethiopia Cash Consortium (ECC), funded by EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid, Sete received 30,000 ETB in unrestricted cash support. Believing that generating income would offer a more sustainable path forward, she invested in a small business. She purchased a refrigerator, and began selling soft drinks, bottled water, and coffee.

Within just a few months, the business has provided Sete with steady income and greater financial stability. She has already repaid her loan and started saving for the future, with plans to expand into a larger restaurant. โ€œI feel more confident now,โ€ she shares. โ€œI can support my family and also participate in community activities again. It feels like I have regained my independence.โ€

This support strengthened her ability to engage in her community, demonstrating how targeted cash assistance can empower families to rebuild livelihoods and restore hope.
