Widowed a year ago, 29-year-old Mesigo Burea fled conflict in Dehable Koma village, Afar region, with her four young children. They found refuge at the Undufo Tele site for displaced people, but their shelter, a traditional Afar hut with no outer covering, offered almost no protection. "There was no difference between sleeping inside the hut or outside," Mesigo recalls.

With no income of her own, even a basic tarpaulin was out of reach.

That changed when her family was identified for emergency shelter support. Through its Common Pipeline, IOM provided shelter materials that complemented the response led by local partner Empowerment for Development (ED), and supported by the Ethiopia Humanitarian Fund, reaching Mesigo and 3,000 other households across Afar.

"Now, we are safe," she says.

Access to safe water changes lives. It supports health, reduces the burden of collecting water, and strengthens communities.

In Maikoho and Debre Abay in northern , communities are benefiting from a more reliable and sustainable water supply thanks to solar-powered water schemes.

These systems harness clean energy to ensure water continues to flow where it is needed most, while reducing operational costs and improving long-term sustainability.

Thanks to the support of the EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid, IOM continues to improve access to safe water services for communities across northern Ethiopia.

Strengthening Ethiopia's Border Security Through Capacity Building

IOM - UN Migration Ethiopia, in partnership with the FDRE Immigration and Citizenship Service (ICS), has launched a five-day Foundational Training on the Detection and Recognition of Travel Document Security Features and Forgeries in Addis Ababa.

The training brings together officers from the ICS, Ethiopian Federal Police (EFP), Ethiopian Police University Page (EPU), and NISS Aviation Security Directorate to enhance their skills in travel document examination, fraud detection, and border security.

Implemented under a regional programme covering Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia and funded by the United Kingdom's Home Office, the initiative supports stronger border governance, improved identity management, and enhanced regional cooperation.

By strengthening the capacity of frontline officials to identify forged and fraudulent travel documents, the programme contributes to safer and more secure migration management across the region.

🌍Today, IOM - UN Migration joined hands with the community to commemorate ***dePreventionDay at the Mai Dimu Planned Camp in Shire, embracing the theme "Changing the Narrative on Su***de." It was an uplifting gathering of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and host communities, united in raising awareness about su***de prevention and mental health.

The day was filled with inspiring drama performances, edifying music, and essential messages on su***de prevention. We also enjoyed various engaging recreational activities that promoted hope, resilience, and the importance of community support. 🎭🎢

πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ή Stronger borders start with well-trained people.

In Adama, 310 immigration officers β€” 164 women and 146 men β€” just completed intensive training to strengthen Ethiopia's border governance. Organized by IOM - UN Migration in partnership with FDRE Immigration and Citizenship Service (ICS), the sessions brought together 240 newly recruited officers and 70 serving staff across seven training clusters.

Over four days, participants went beyond the basics of border management to cover migrant protection, health at borders, gender equality, disability inclusion, prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse, and Ethiopia's National Referral Mechanism for vulnerable migrants, all built on the Integrated Border Governance Training Manual for the IGAD Region, developed with the IOM African Capacity Building Centre - ACBC, IGAD Secretariat, the East African Community and regional experts.

The goal: officers who can secure borders while also protecting the rights and dignity of every migrant who crosses them.

This training was delivered under the Better Migration Management (BMM) Programme, funded by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), implemented by CIVIPOL, GIZ, IOM and UNODC across Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan and Malawi.

Exciting news for public health in Ethiopia! In a collaborative effort to boost preparedness and response against the ongoing Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, IOM has provided 14 thermal imaging cameras to the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI).

These advanced cameras are designed to enhance surveillance and improve traveller screening at key Points of Entry, including Bole International Airport ✈️. By identifying travellers with elevated body temperatures early, we can ensure timely detection and response to potential public health threats.

This initiative is a significant step in strengthening public health security across Ethiopia's critical international air and land-crossing points. With EPHI's guidance, these cameras will be strategically installed to maximize their impact.

♻️ Advancing Smarter Borders Through Environmental Sustainability and Circular Economy Solutions

Members of the Dewele Plastic Recycling Association are strengthening their capacity to undertake safe, sustainable, and economically viable plastic waste collection and recycling activities through a specialized training in .

The training brought together 15 association members (8 women and 7 men) and a representative from the Dewele City Administration, equipping participants with skills in plastic waste management and recycling, environmental protection, occupational health and safety, entrepreneurship, business management, financial literacy, and sustainable association operations.

As part of the practical learning component, participants visited the Hibret Lelimat Association and a private recycling company in Dire Dawa, gaining firsthand insight into the recycling value chain and the potential of transforming plastic waste into marketable products and sustainable sources of income.

By promoting environmental stewardship alongside economic empowerment, the initiative supports cleaner and healthier border communities while contributing to the sustainability of the Dewele Border Control Post and the Ethiopia-Djibouti trade corridor.

This activity is implemented under IOM's regional project, "Creating Smarter Borders: Enhancing Regular and Safe Mobility Pathways, Connectivity and Integration in Africa through Digitization," jointly implemented with the African Union Commission and generously supported by the Government of Japan πŸ‡―πŸ‡΅.
