IOM Dessie WASH Team Brings Relief to 250 Families in South Wollo After Three-Year Gap

This week, we successfully distributed partial Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Non-Food Items (NFIs) to 250 vulnerable households at the Gerado IDP site in South Wollo Zone. After more than three years without any WASH-NFI support, this much-needed assistance has brought hope and relief to the community.

A huge thank you to the EU-funded 🇪🇺 IM-3 project for making this possible and to the WASH Cluster for their continued collaboration. The gratitude expressed by the community reminds us why we do what we do. Together, we’re making a difference, one step at a time. 💧❤️

📢 Supporting skills education for all!

Through the livelihood component of the EU-funded 🇪🇺 Individual Measure 3 (IM3) project, IOM - UN Migration is providing material support to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges in region to foster inclusive, safe learning spaces for IDPs, returnees & host communities.

Four institutions in Ambasel, Tehuledere, Habru, and Woldiya City recently received ICT equipment, industrial sewing machines for garment production, and various tools and machinery for the Building and Construction, as well as Hotel and Tourism departments, to strengthen courses offered to local communities.

Together, we can make vocational skills education accessible to everyone and build stronger, more resilient communities.

From Displacement to Design: Medhanie’s Remarkable Journey

In Adigrat, Ethiopia, the rhythmic buzz of a sewing machine symbolizes resilience. Medhanie, a 29-year-old tailor, is crafting a new future for himself and his family after being displaced by the conflict in Northern Ethiopia.

Returning home in 2021 with little beyond hope, he joined a vocational training programme supported by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and funded by the European Union's 🇪🇺 IM3 project. Armed with new skills and start-up capital, he launched a growing tailoring business, creating custom pieces and selling thrift garments.

🌟 Empowering Communities: PSEA & AAP Training Boosts Trust and Transparency in Livelihood Projects

IOM recently conducted an integrated PSEA (Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse) and AAP (Accountability to Affected Populations) training for 194 Livelihood Business Group Committee members (96 men, 98 women) in Adigrat and Gantafeshum in Tigray as part of the EU IM3 Project.

This training focused on building skills to promote transparency, prevent misuse of power, and ensure safe reporting and referral mechanisms for complaints, including sexual exploitation and abuse (SEA) cases. By empowering these committees, we’re fostering greater trust, accountability, and safety within livelihood interventions.

Together, we’re creating stronger, more resilient communities!

IOM Marks Menstrual Hygiene Day with Vibrant Celebration at Mariya Primary School

The IOM WASH team in Dessie had an amazing time marking Menstrual Hygiene Day (28 May) at Mariya Primary School, Ambasel Woreda, South Wolo Zone! 🎉

With the theme "Together for a Period-Friendly World," we engaged 360 participants (180 males and 180 females) in a fun and meaningful event. The day was filled with exciting activities like drama, poetry, games, and a lively Q&A competition. It was heartwarming to see students and teachers come together to break the stigma and promote awareness about menstrual hygiene.

A huge thank you to the EU-funded IM-3 project for their incredible support and dedication to fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment for everyone. Together, we’re making a difference, one step at a time!

Honouring Ethical Migration Reporting in Addis Ababa!

On May 28, the CREATE Project, funded by UK International Development 🇬🇧, hosted an impactful media awards ceremony to celebrate journalists and organizations advocating ethical, stigma-free coverage of migration and human trafficking.

Co-organized by IOM - UN Migration and the የሴቶችና ማህበራዊ ጉዳይ ሚኒስቴር Ministry of Women and Social Affairs (MoWSA), the event showcased how responsible journalism can deepen public understanding and uplift the voices of those with lived experiences.

IOM Ethiopia and the Ethiopian Police University (EPU) this week signed a Cooperation Agreement at the University’s Sendafa campus, marking an important step toward strengthening Ethiopia’s migration and border governance systems.

The Agreement creates a long‑term institutional partnership focused on training, curriculum development, research collaboration, and technical support in areas such as migration management, protection, counter‑smuggling, trafficking in persons, and document verification.

This collaboration will help integrate international standards and protection‑sensitive approaches into national law enforcement training, supporting Ethiopia’s broader modernization efforts in border management and public security.

IOM, EPHI and Partners Map Mobility in Sidama Region to Boost Public Health Emergency Preparedness

In collaboration with the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI), Sidama Region Health Bureau, and Sidama Region Public Health Institute, IOM conducted a Population Mobility Mapping (PMM) exercise. This initiative brought together key stakeholders from health bureaus, referral health facilities, transport offices, Disaster Risk Management Bureau, livestock resource development, Kebele representatives, Hawassa Airport, and major mobility corridors.

The goal? To better understand population movement patterns, identify high-risk routes, and enhance preparedness for public health emergencies. By mapping mobility dynamics, we aim to strengthen disease surveillance, improve cross-sector coordination, and respond more effectively to outbreaks.

We appreciate the generous financial support from the United States Government 🇺🇸. Together, we’re building a safer and healthier future for all!
