IOM Gathers Partners in Addis Ababa to Boost Stability for Displaced Communities

Achieving durable solutions for displacement goes beyond stand-alone efforts! It requires sustained investment in livelihoods, equitable access to services, social cohesion, and strong partnerships.

Recently, at a high-level federal panel in Addis Ababa, IOM brought together representatives from the Ethiopian Government, UN agencies, and development partners. Together, we advanced a shared vision for government-led, locally owned approaches that promote stability and resilience.

Our discussions highlighted the importance of collaboration across the humanitarian-development-peace nexus to support long-term recovery and durable solutions for displaced people and their host communities.

This event was part of a joint initiative with Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and UN-Habitat Ethiopia, supported by Sida - Styrelsen för Internationellt Utvecklingssamarbete and Swiss Development & Cooperation. Empowering Communities: 170 Trained in PSEA and Disability Inclusion in Amhara Region

We've just conducted a transformative training for 170 participants, which included 120 Livelihood Business Group committee members and 50 WASH actors, Health Extension Workers and Health Promoters cross the Ambassel, Tehuledere, Habru, and Woldiya woredas in Amhara Region. The focus was on Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) and Disability Inclusion (DI).

The PSEA sessions enhanced participants' understanding of how to prevent power abuse and utilize secure, confidential reporting systems, contributing to safer communities.

Our DI training bolstered stakeholders' ability to incorporate disability inclusion in humanitarian activities. Attendees learned about accessibility, reasonable accommodation, and critical data collection.

We also convened a workshop with 20 Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) in South Wollo, focusing on their involvement in decision-making. Together, we highlighted gaps and planned future actions.

Supported by the European Union-funded IM3 project, these contributions are paving the way for more inclusive and accountable communities!

Empowering Frontline Workers: Enhancing Digital Identity Systems for Migrant Returnees in Ethiopia!

On July 11-12, 2026, the IOM - UN Migration partners with the National ID Ethiopia (Fayda), the የሴቶችና ማህበራዊ ጉዳይ ሚኒስቴር Ministry of Women and Social Affairs, Ethiopost and others for a two-day training session aimed at empowering those who facilitate digital identity systems for migrant returnees.

Our dedicated registration officers, reviewers, facilitators, social workers, and coordination teams are engaging in practical exercises to enhance their skills in data quality, biometric and demographic registration, document verification, and data protection.

Part of the "Creating Smarter Borders" project funded by the Government of Japan 🇯🇵 and implemented by IOM and the African Union Commission, the initiative promotes safe mobility, connectivity, and integration through digitization.

Strengthening these frontline skills and adopting digital innovation paves the way for safer migration and robust identity systems, ensuring more inclusive access to essential services for migrant returnees in Ethiopia. Let's build a brighter future together!

IOM's Lifesaving Health Services Reach Thousands in Tigray with Ethiopia Humanitarian Fund Support!

With outstanding support from the Ethiopia Humanitarian Fund (EHF), IOM is significantly impacting the lives of IDPs, returnees, and host communities in Contested Area 2 and Northwestern Tigray.

Our emergency health programme has been a crucial lifeline, delivering essential medicines and medical supplies to major health centers, including Sekota Mariam Health Center, Mai-T(s)ebri Primary Hospital, Suhul General Hospital, Adi Daero Primary Hospital, and Adi Nebred Health Center. These efforts are anticipated to support around 41,631 patients in need.

In addition, we've provided 3,200 litres of fuel to enhance referral services and have deployed 12 skilled health workers to ensure high-quality healthcare reaches everyone in need. Together, we're supporting crisis-affected communities and ensuring the delivery of essential health services.

IOM Deputy Regional Director Leads Team Visit to Somali Region to Boost Durable Solutions Efforts

From June 26 to July 4, 2026, IOM's Deputy Regional Director for Operations in East and Horn of Africa, Nihan Erdogan, visited Ethiopia's Somali Region. Starting in Addis Ababa, the trip involved engaging meetings with key officials and partners.

The team travelled to Jijiga and Goljano to observe Durable Solutions projects, where they engaged with local authorities, women peace ambassadors, and project beneficiaries, highlighting success in livelihood and school rehabilitation initiatives.

The visit included stops at the IOM Migration Response Center in Tog Wejale and a Durable Solutions site at Gowry Awl, emphasizing collaboration in migration governance.

In Deneba Town, Jimma, the focus was on community-based reintegration efforts, fostering conversations with migrants and returnees.

This visit underscored the significance of partnerships and shared commitment to sustainable regional solutions. Thanks to everyone who made it impactful!

Somali Region Hosts Groundbreaking Conference on Durable Solutions for Displacement

The Somali Region Disaster and Risk Management Bureau (DRMB), along with the Regional Durable Solutions Secretariat (ReDSS) and IOM - UN Migration, recently led a significant Durable Solutions Strategy Review Conference in Jijiga. This event brought together various stakeholders, including government, donor agencies, NGOs, academia, civil society, and displaced communities.

The aim was to evaluate progress and prioritize sustainable displacement solutions. Discussions centered on integrating durable solutions into governmental plans, enhancing the humanitarian-development-peace nexus, and improving data systems for better decision-making. The need to involve the private sector, diaspora, and faith-based groups was emphasized.

Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and host communities stressed the necessity of social cohesion, with calls for more access to jobs, education, healthcare, and infrastructure. Despite challenges such as reduced donor funds and climate impacts, participants committed to fostering community-driven solutions for a more resilient and dignified region.

Adigrat Milk Production Group: A Symbol of Hope and Stability

In Adigrat, Tigray, a group of 11 community members is transforming their lives through a milk production business! 🐄🥛

Desta and Selam, along with their team, have turned a small initiative into a source of income, confidence, and hope. Thanks to support from the European Union and the IOM - UN Migration, they've received training and start-up capital to kickstart their journey.

Their hard work is paying off! The group now produces 25-30 litres of milk daily, supporting their families and planning for the future. They dream of packaging milk to reach more customers and increase their income.

Empowering Women and Communities: IOM and EU Partners Train 20 Participants in Reusable Sanitary Pad Production in Amhara Region

In partnership with the European Union-funded IM3 implementing partners, we've successfully wrapped up a 10-day training session in South and North Wollo, Region!

A big shoutout to the 20 amazing participants, including women, girls, School WASH Club members, teachers, ERC volunteers, and Livelihood business groups, who have gained invaluable skills in producing reusable sanitary pads (AFRI-pad model) through TVET.

This initiative not only empowers them with practical skills but also enhances their knowledge of safe and dignified menstrual hygiene management (MHM). By locally producing these pads, we're promoting health, dignity, and supporting livelihood opportunities, all while boosting community resilience.
