Today, members of the Ethiopia Country Collaboration held their third quarterly meeting, reaffirming their shared commitment to strengthening sustainable WASH systems across Ethiopia.

Since its establishment in 2018, the collaboration has expanded its membership, facilitated regular learning, sharing, and coordination platforms, hosted cross-regional learning exchanges, developed and rolled out Woreda-wide WASH Systems Strengthening Guidelines, and is currently conducting sanitation and hygiene bottleneck analyses. During the meeting, government partners from the Ministry of Health and One WASH National Coordination Office shared updates on sector transformation, water, sanitation, and hygiene initiatives, while development partners highlighted progress in systems strengthening, water quality management, climate-resilient services, service professionalisation, private sector engagement, and advocacy for increased WASH financing.

Participants underscored the importance of deeper collaboration through joint advocacy, collective fundraising, knowledge sharing, and coordinated action to scale up systems-strengthening approaches and accelerate sustainable WASH services for all Ethiopians.

The Ministry of Water and Energy (MoWE) convened a national workshop on Rural supply and systems management models in Adama during July 01- 02, 2026. The workshop was opened by H.E. Dr. Ambassador Asfaw Dingamo, State Minister for Water and Sanitation at the Ministry of Water and Energy. The workshop involved the MoWE staff, regional Water and Energy Bureaus, some town water utilities, and development partners. The objectives of the workshop were to validate a national guideline on management models for rural water supply and sanitation and to design projects to showcase the guideline's implementation. IRC WASH shared experiences on rural water supply management models from Ethiopia and other countries.

Ethiopia is celebrating the annual National Menstrual Health and Hygiene (MHH) Day.
At the event, H.E. Dr. Dereje Duguma, State Minister of Health, highlighted key priorities, including the vital role of the private sector, the importance of improved hygiene and sanitation in schools and public institutions, the establishment of safe and dignified spaces for menstruation in schools, strengthened advocacy and awareness efforts, improved accessibility of MHH products, increased local production, and the continuation of advocacy efforts for tax exemptions on imported MHH products.

Agenda for Change, Ethiopia country collaboration is maintaining momentum.
Today, members convened at the Welthungerhilfe Office to reflect on progress in , and (WASH) systems strengthening, collaboration among member organisations, government and the private sector, and to agree on the way forward.
The discussion highlighted the importance of collective advocacy for WASH, including coordinated engagement around COP32, scaling up WASH MIS successes, and aligning initiatives with government‑led national efforts, particularly One WASH Phase III, WASH Presidential Compact and WASH Pact.
Agenda for Change is a global WASH systems-strengthening platform, established in 2015 and in Ethiopia in 2018, providing a strong space for knowledge exchange and collective action.

Over the past two decades, Ethiopia has made significant efforts in embedding the principles of integrated resources management (IWRM) into its national development agendas. Anchored in the 1999 Water Resources Management Policy and supported by basin-level institutions and multi-sector programmes, the country has established a strong foundation for coordinated and sustainable water governance. However, recent assessments indicate that the primary challenge is no longer policy formulation but implementation.
