Agenda for Change, Ethiopia country collaboration is maintaining momentum.
Today, members convened at the Welthungerhilfe Office to reflect on progress in , and (WASH) systems strengthening, collaboration among member organisations, government and the private sector, and to agree on the way forward.
The discussion highlighted the importance of collective advocacy for WASH, including coordinated engagement around COP32, scaling up WASH MIS successes, and aligning initiatives with government‑led national efforts, particularly One WASH Phase III, WASH Presidential Compact and WASH Pact.
Agenda for Change is a global WASH systems-strengthening platform, established in 2015 and in Ethiopia in 2018, providing a strong space for knowledge exchange and collective action.

Over the past two decades, Ethiopia has made significant efforts in embedding the principles of integrated resources management (IWRM) into its national development agendas. Anchored in the 1999 Water Resources Management Policy and supported by basin-level institutions and multi-sector programmes, the country has established a strong foundation for coordinated and sustainable water governance. However, recent assessments indicate that the primary challenge is no longer policy formulation but implementation. Water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) stakeholders are currently discussing the WASH Presidential Compact and outlining the way forward. According to Abera Endeshaw, Senior Advisor to the Minister at the Ministry of Water and Energy, the WASH Presidential Compact was developed in response to major sector challenges, including low resilience to climate shocks intensified by extreme weather, growing risks to water availability, high and often unaffordable investment costs, rapid urbanisation and population growth, increasing global and cross-sector resource competition, and the slow adoption of new technologies and innovations. The Compact focuses on financing and resourcing, mutual accountability, and knowledge management. It serves as a high-level advocacy tool to support the broader national WASH programme and calls for strong political leadership to ensure sector prioritisation.

The 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union, organised by UNDP in Addis Ababa, focused on groundwater investment through strategic partnerships to advance the Agenda 2063 water and sanitation goals in Africa. During the session, a presentation was made on the Horn of Africa water investment pipeline, covering projects in seven IGAD member states, followed by in-depth discussions. The session highlighted the importance of collaboration and partnerships among countries, the private sector, and funders to secure financing for groundwater investments. Water was also highlighted as a key driver of mutual growth and regional security, beyond its role as an investment opportunity.
