STEMpower Inc. and EDI Forge Strategic Partnership to Accelerate Ethiopia’s Startup Ecosystem

STEMpower Inc. and the Entrepreneurship Development Institute - Ethiopia (EDI) entered into a historic collaboration through signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which was centered around the theme "Collaboration on Ethiopian Entrepreneurship Ecosystem Development."

This MoU signing took place as a result of bilateral negotiations conducted by none other than Dr. Simenew Keskes, STEMpower Country Director, and Dr. Hassen Hussien, CEO of EDI, both of whom emphasized their shared determination to convert local grassroots innovations into profitable businesses.

The collaboration of STEMpower and EDI entails a unique combination of expertise held by the latter organization on entrepreneurial capacity building, and the national presence of the former organization through its wide network of Innovation Hubs, STEM Centers, and Digital Fabrication Laboratories (FabLabs).

Through the process of incubation and acceleration through such projects, early-stage founders will be able to directly engage with FabLabs in order to prototype their hardware products quickly. Such expertise is then supplemented by intense business acumen training and mentorship from some of the best experts available to ensure the success of deep tech innovations.

Further, beyond the basic training provided through the partnership, another primary goal of the partnership will be to facilitate access to seed money and growth capital for young firms in close association with venture capitalists, angel investors, and regulatory bodies. Notably, a key aspect of such an initiative will be the inclusion of young people, women, and marginalized populations.

Through such efforts to democratize technology and education, STEMpower and EDI are setting the stage for a self-sustaining entrepreneurial environment across Ethiopia.

60 Students Cultivate STEM and Innovation Skills Through Hands-On Training at Foka STEM Center

Over the course of three months, students from Oromia Development Association Boarding School engaged in immersive, practical STEM learning at the Foka STEM Center, acquiring invaluable experience in coding, electronics, and project development. This training provided participants with the unique opportunity to translate classroom concepts into real-world solutions through interactive activities and innovation-driven education.
The program successfully trained 60 students, focusing on Arduino programming, fundamental electronics, circuit design, and prototype development.

Throughout the training, participants honed their ability to identify problems, design effective solutions, and create functional prototypes using the skills they developed.
A standout feature of the program was the final project showcase, where students presented mini prototypes they had created during the training. These projects highlighted their growing technical expertise, creativity, and understanding of how STEM can be leveraged to tackle everyday challenges.
In addition to technical knowledge, the training significantly bolstered students' confidence, critical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities, essential skills for future academic and professional success.

Reflecting on the experience, participant Kena Mekonen remarked: "The training helped us build confidence, develop new ideas, and refine our future goals."

Fellow student Abdurahmaan Wake added: "Learning Arduino and technology skills at Foka STEM Center was both thrilling and invaluable."

120 Women, One Powerful Goal: Turning STEM Skills into Economic Opportunity!

STEMpower, Case Western Reserve University, and the Ministry of Education Ethiopia just finished the Chemical Microfactory Community Program. They trained 120 amazing women from the MoE in hands-on, entrepreneurial STEM skills. The ladies learned how to make bar soap, liquid detergent, and extract oil from seeds.

During the one-week workshop, State Minister Ayelech Eshete gave an uplifting speech. She urged the grads to use their new skills to start small businesses at home.

As participant Konjit Kassa shared: “The experience was truly inspiring and accessible.”

Another participant, Wubalem Abebe, added: “The training was simple, practical, and engaging through group work.”

These women are ready to turn their knowledge into successful local enterprises, which will boost both jobs and the economy. We're excited to see what they'll accomplish.

House of Peoples’ Representatives Standing Committee Evaluates STEMpower FabLab

The STEMpower FabLab recently hosted a high-level delegation from the House of Peoples’ Representatives Standing Committee on Public Development Enterprises Affairs, led by the Committee’s Chairperson, the Honorable Melese Mena.

STEMpower’s Country Director, Dr. Simenew Keskes, guided the lawmakers through the fabrication facility, showcasing where the organization locally manufactures its signature science kits and practical learning apparatus. Dr. Simenew emphasized the lab's critical role in bridging the gap between theory and practice, effectively democratizing access to quality, hands-on STEM education for students across Ethiopia. Furthermore, he highlighted that the fundamental design and manufacturing philosophy of the STEMpower FabLab is purposely aligned with the government's strategic objective of import substitution, proving that high-quality educational tools can be engineered right here at home to conserve vital national resources.

Highlighting the strategic alignment between state development and grassroots innovation, Dr. Temesgen Garoma, CEO of the Educational Materials Production and Distribution Enterprise (EMPDE), noted:
"Investing in practical education and innovation is the ultimate foundation for sustainable national development. We believe STEMpower is already making a profoundly meaningful contribution toward this goal."

Impressed by the operation, Honorable Chairperson Melese Mena expressed his enthusiasm for the project’s impact. He underscored the urgent need to scale the initiative nationally by bridging connections between government agencies and non-governmental educational stakeholders, promising to personally advocate for the project to relevant federal bodies.

Delegation members widely commended the tangible progress made in expanding STEM accessibility, urging continued momentum in domestic manufacturing and innovation. Moving forward, STEMpower remains deeply committed to engineering transformative learning environments that inspire the next generation of Ethiopian thinkers, builders, and problem-solvers through direct, hands-on experience.

The fabrication laboratory mass produced and delivered thousands of science kits to more than 120 high schools in Ethiopia.

This MoU comes after extremely fruitful sessions with Dr. Punitha Ganesan, the Chairperson of Bharath College and Mr. Vikram Suriyaprasath, Strategic Head of Bharath College, about how to close the global gap in educational resources. After this groundbreaking agreement, Bharath College sets up and launched its first STEMpower STEM center in India.

Empower Teachers Outside STEM Hubs!

Recently, STEMpower’s Foka STEM Center has conducted the revolutionary Mobile Laboratory Program which took our STEM Education Approach training to the city of Dukem to provide three-day training to natural science teachers at Danfer High School. Through this immersive program, teachers have learned how to engage their students in hands-on projects in the areas of robotics & digital laboratories, Arduino computer & fiber optic systems as well as scientific data analytics.

Eighteen (18) educators acquired skills necessary to teach students through technological integration. In doing so, this program shows that we have the potential to build a sustainable future through bridging gaps in educational resources.
“Practical learning of science allows students to solve real-life problems creatively,” stated Dereje Debele, a Physics teacher at Danfer High School.

STEMpower continues to commit itself to scaling such learning models which emphasize inclusiveness and empower future educators to foster future-proof education systems.

Debark’s Space Scholars: Finalists on the World Stage

A huge achievement in international terms, the STEM Center of Debark University has produced six students who became finalists of the Global Future Space Science Scholars Meet (GFSSM). The GFSSM is an annual competition that requires students from grade 7-12 to perform in space science and business through simulations initiated by aerospace organizations from the United States, China, and the United Kingdom.

The contestants participated in a challenging learning program, which included 'Cloud Classrooms' related to rocket science and 'Mars Survival Skills', where students were taught resource management skills for surviving in Mars.

The students from Debark University stood out through their unique creativity and problem-solving techniques. One of the finalists, Tigist Setegn said that the experience has given her confidence to tackle worldwide problems.

Such a great feat has been realized through STEMpower Inc., which not only helped in the setting up of the center but still helps in offering crucial training and technical consumables necessary for innovation.

In addition to becoming a finalist, these students have been rewarded scholarships as well as educational trips to enhance their skills in STEM. This is the great potential of young people when equipped with the right resources to make them transcend borders.

This prestigious recognition was presented in the esteemed presence of H.E. the Deputy Prime Minister and other senior government officials, marking a significant milestone in our mission to enhance practical STEM education through solutions developed right here in Ethiopia.

The week-long Made in Ethiopia Expo 2026 successfully concluded, featuring over 350 domestic and international exhibitors from various sectors. This exhibition served as a vital platform for showcasing local innovation, fostering partnerships, and underscoring Ethiopia’s burgeoning industrial and technological advancements. The event also included high-level panel discussions attended by more than 1,300 participants, focusing on the vision of the Made in Ethiopia initiative for 2030 and the future of local manufacturing, entrepreneurship, and sustainable development.

During the expo, STEMpower proudly displayed our 13 locally designed science kits aimed at enhancing hands-on STEM learning in schools nationwide. The event provided us with invaluable opportunities to connect with government leaders, businesses, educators, innovators, and development partners who share our commitment to empowering the next generation through science and technology.

STEMpower FabLab Showcases Local Innovation at "Made in Ethiopia" Expo 2026

The products from STEMpower's FabLab were highly appreciated by H.E. Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed at the "Made in Ethiopia" Expo 2026 event. This national event acts as the best stage in appreciating the innovations that are made in Ethiopia, promoting growth and development in the industries as well as meeting the country's development goals in general.

In this year's "Made in Ethiopia" Expo event, STEMpower exhibited its locally developed science kits, which include various tools that enhance STEM education. The theme of this year is also consistent with one of the initiatives of STEMpower, which is called "Designed and Manufactured in Ethiopia” meant for import substitutions. Through collaboration with Educational Material Production and Distribution Enterprise of Ethiopia, STEMpower has provided science kits to almost 100 high schools in the country so far with 13 science kits each.

Being among those who participate in such exhibitions brings an amazing feeling of seeing what is happening in the country's industrial and technological scene. Through interactions with important stakeholders ranging from policy makers to industry giants, the platform has been able to create new paths for:

✅ Visibility: Exhibiting local talent on the national level.

✅ Collaboration: Developing relationships with both government bodies and the private sectors

✅ Impact: Rapid expansion of our education tools throughout the nation.

The STEMpower booth received recognition in the form of an inspection by the Prime Minister himself, H.E. Dr. Abiy Ahmed, who got acquainted with our science kits and highlighted their role in bringing a major change to the nation’s education system.
Prof. Birhanu Nega, who serves as Minister of Education, also had kind words about our initiative, stating that "it is encouraging to see that STEMpower has already begun scaling up the production of science kits." Other important guests included Ahmed Shide (Minister of Finance) and Melaku Alebel (Minister of Industry), along with many others who showed great interest in our cause.

In light of the development that Ethiopia is undergoing in the field of industry and innovation, expos like the Made in Ethiopia Expo highlight the importance of local manufacturing and innovative thinking. Stemming from the same vision of Ethiopia, STEMpower is determined to help the future generations through scientific advancement.
