60 years ago, the world promised to protect its teachers. Today, we renew that promise. 🍎

Under the theme “Standing with teachers," World Teachers' Day 2026 calls on all of us to protect, promote and elevate the teaching profession.

For Rotary, literacy is where change begins. Through , the Rotary Club of Addis Ababa Central Mella and Ethiopia Reads are putting books in children's hands. But no book finds its way to a child's heart without a teacher to guide it.

📖 Reading: The Art We Wear / የምንለብሰው ጥበብ

A classroom. A held-up book. A room of children leaning in to see the page.

Rotarian Bezawit spent the session with The Art We Wear, a bilingual English–Amharic story about the clothes we weave and wear — the cotton, the hands that spin it, the patterns that carry who we are. Children looked at the page and recognised their own grandmothers' work, their own holidays, their own country.

There is a line running through all of it. An environmentalist knows that what we grow and what we make come from the same land. A story like this one teaches a child to value both, long before anyone uses the word heritage.

For Rotary Reads 2026, she took one story into one classroom, read it aloud, and left the book behind in the reading corner where it keeps working after she has gone.

📖 Reading: Counting in Ethiopia / በኢትዮጵያ ቆጠራ

Eighty-eight countries. A law degree from Aix-en-Provence. A master's in International Law from the Sorbonne in Paris. More than thirty years with the United Nations, including as Director of Gender and Development at UNDP Headquarters.And here she is, in a classroom in Ethiopia, counting to ten with children.

That is not a step down. That is what a life of service looks like when it comes home.

Since retiring in 2011, Rotarian Aster has built something remarkable: the Tsehay Zewde Memorial Scholarship, which supports the university education of female students with visual impairment. More than 350 blind students have come through the programme. It is endorsed by her Rotary Club and is now expanding to Bahir Dar University.

A woman who argued for gender and development on the world stage is now making sure a young woman who cannot see the page still gets to finish her degree. And making sure a child who is only beginning to read gets a story worth remembering.

For Rotary Reads 2026, she is reading Counting in Ethiopia — numbers, animals, landscapes, our own country counted out loud in English and Amharic — and leaving the book behind in the community reading corner.

📖 Reading: The Boy Who Never Gave Up! / ተስፋ ቆርጦ የማያውቀው ህጻኑ ልጅ!

Some of the people behind a reading campaign spend their days making sure the books arrive, the records are kept and the details hold together. This month, Hanna steps out from behind that work and sits down with the children themselves.

The Boy Who Never Gave Up! is a bilingual English–Amharic story about persistence — a boy who keeps going, told in a way children remember long after the page is turned. It is a good story to receive from someone whose own work is quiet, steady and never gives up either.

For Rotary Reads 2026, Hanna is taking that story into a community, reading it aloud to a circle of children, and leaving the book behind in their reading corner.

📚 ROTARY READS 2026 IS LAUNCHED!

Today, 22 September 2026, the Rotary Club of Addis Ababa Central Mella launches Rotary Reads 2026, a one-month community reading campaign marking Rotary's Basic Education and Literacy Month — in partnership with the Rotary Club of Addis Ababa, Open Hearts Big Dreams and Ethiopia Reads.

The idea is simple. One champion. One book. One reading session. One community.

Over the next month we aim to:
• Mobilize 30 Literacy Champions from across the Rotary family
• Deliver 30 interactive reading sessions
• Donate 30 bilingual English–Amharic children's books
• Reach at least 300 children in 5 communities
• Leave every single book behind in a community reading corner

Campaign period: 22 September – 22 October 2026, Ethiopia.

‎ኢትዮጵያ ሪድስ በየአመቱ የሚያካሂደው የልጆች ንባብ ጉባኤ "የንባብን ችግኝ በቀዳማዊ ልጅነት መትከል " በሚል መሪ ቃል ካሳንችስ በሚገኘው ኢንተር ሌግዠሪ ሆቴል መጋቢት 8ቀን 2018 ዓ.ም አካሂዷል።

‎የዘንድሮውን ንባብ ጉባኤ ኢትዮጵያ ሪድስ ከአዲስ አበባ ከተማ አስተዳደር የስትራጄክ ጉዳዮች ማስተባበሪያ ጽፈት ቤት (SPMO)፣ ከትምህርት ሚኒስቴር እና ቫን ሊር ፋውንዴሽን ጋር በመተባበር ነው ያዘጋጀው ።

‎በመድረኩ በሁለት ቋንቋዎች ማለትም በአማርኛና በአፋን ኦሮሞ የተዘጋጁ ከ0 እስከ 3 ዓመት እና 4 እስከ6 ዓመት ዕድሜ ላላቸው ሕፃናት የሚሆኑ 20 ሺህ መፅሐፍት አስመርቋል።

‎በጉባኤው ላይ የአዲስ አበባ ከተማ አስተዳደር ከፍተኛ የስራ ሐላፊዎች በልጆችና ሕፃናት ላይ የሚሰሩ የሲቪል ማህበረሰብ ድርጅቶች ተወካዮች፣ ከአዲስ አበባ ትምህርት ቢሮ ሐላፊዎችና ሌሎች ባለ ድርሻ አካላት የተገኙ ሲሆን በሕፃናት የንባብ ልምድ ላይ ያተኮሩ ጥናታዊ ጽሑፎች ላይ ውይይቶች እና የልምድ ልውውጥ አድርገዋል ። መርሐ ግብሩ በዛሬው ዕለትም ቀጥሎ ውሏል።
