Women almost constitute 50 per cent of the total population of Ethiopia and have been making substantial contribution to socio-economic development. But, unfortunately their contribution largely remains unrecognized. It has been observed that though women are burdened with family and house-hold responsibilities the overall socio-economic environment discriminates against them.
In the urban setting due to abject poverty, family disintegration, unemployment and rural urban migration women are forced to engage in commercial s*x work, exposing themselves to s*xually transmitted diseases including HIV, unwanted pregnancy and unsafe abortion. On the other hand one of the most difficult and devastating challenges that affects women in many rural parts of the country is lack of access to safe and clean drinking water. In like manner, women in Durame Zone Kedida Gamela Wereda are observed to lined up for many hours to collect and fill their jars with trickles of un clean surface water after hazards and difficult travel through deep ravine gorge where 2 of them have even lost their lives due to sudden flood and rolled off rock from a terrifying cleave.
WE- strongly believes that empowering women is the key element in the development of an economy. With women moving forward, the family moves, the village moves and the nation moves. Hence, improving the status of women by way of their economic empowerment is highly called for. WE- has therefore set a strategic direction to address the complex and multifaceted socio-economic challenges of women both in Addis Ababa City and rural parts of Ethiopia. For this cause WE- has established one women rehabilitation center and started to receive and rehabilitate women who have been engaged in commercial s*x work in Addis Ababa Bole Sub City Wereda 3.
WE- as part of its passionate vision to alleviate poverty and solve the socio economic problem of rural women, it has also embarked and engaged in water development project to drill a deep borehole which is believed to provide water upon its completion for 23,000 members of the society in Durame Zone Kedida Gamela Wereda in the South Regional State. WE, likewise realizes quality education as one of the major factors to transform and promote the socio-economic conditions of given society and hence, it- has completed its feasibility study and preparation to establish a boarding school of excellence center which could accommodate 300 outstanding students per year of which most of them will be girls in Durame Zone Kedida Gamela Wereda.
To bring about an intended sustainable development and create economically transformed livelihood among poor women both in urban and rural settings, WE- has been determined to conduct a skill and vocational trainings, provide micro financial loan and revolving fund and engage women in to income generation activities and facilitate skilled women into entrepreneurship. .
